Hurry Up Tomorrow
Review: This is a reissue of a rare soul single by The Nu' Rons, a vocal quartet from Salem, NJ who recorded only around four singles in their still-strong career. Surprisingly, 'You Came Thru' was not one of them, and is yet another new single to be issued for the first time via Cannonball, after renewed interest in the band came about sometime in the late 2010s. 'You Came Thru' is a slick and uptempo expression of gratitude for love, while the bundled-in 'Hurry Up Tomorrow' is a comparatively slow and sweet, yet no less tight, paean to the a golden era of love.

Review: Since 2021, Suckaside - aka. ghetto-funk superstar B-side and funky DJ Sucka Timmy - have been prolific in their steady but healthy stream of releases in the realm of bespoke beats, centring on hip-hop, breakbeat and funk edits. Though mostly a digital affair, at least four vinyl records from the outfit have been released, and now this new one, 'Even After All', can be considered a part of that repertoire. Most prominently on this release comes a fresh fremix of the Finlay Quaye's 1997 hit 'Even After All', which was featured on his debut album Maverick A Strike.

Review: Japanese jazz masters Nautilus strike back again with their first release of 2024, 'Georgy Porgy', a special label collaboration between Oonops Drops and their Japanese label Urban Discos (Diskunion). The title number is a cover version of the yacht rock classic 'Georgy Porgy', with Nautilus' version heard performed alongside UK-based vocalist songwriter and vocalist John Turrell, one half of Smoove & Turrell, and German legend Toni-L. Theirs is a slick and maximised rendition. On the flipside is a similar classic versioning; a sweet cover version of Al Green's 'Let's Stay Together', albeit this time coming with the vocal talents of Japanese singer Keyco and brought with it a crisp, headroomy neo-soulful bent.

Review: Volume 2 from the Jackin’ Disco crew promises to deliver something other than murder on the dancefloor despite the Sophie Ellis-Bextor flip; paring the disco pace back to a downer-tempo, albeit still delivering ample energy to fit on a single slice of 7” wax. The edit on the A-side is sourced from not from Bextor’s breakout disco-dance hit but rather her equally-as-good, classic feature cut ‘Groovejet’ by producer Spiller. On the B comes an equally loopy, happy-to-be-jacked bootleg of Carol Williams’ ‘Love Is You’.

Like previous editions, Double A contributes 'Super Badman Riddim' which is both catchy and clever. Featuring James Brown samples thrown in the mix takes this dub related track to the limit of fun. For the B-side, James Nasty's 'Fan Dem Off' with a peak time party song that should take the dancefloor to another level. These attention getters are ideal for being addictively fun and different. Review: Somewhere between a sauerkraut connoisseur, an ancient Athenian philosopher, and a crate-digging obsessive (we'll assume this is the threefold meaning of the nominal pun until we're course-corrected) Saukrates returns with a new single 'Driftin'' via Love Touch Records. This new limited 7" is indeed as, perhaps even more so, delicious as a jar of pickled cabbage considered in Socratic dialogue. The Juno-nominated Canadian icon is here heard teaming up with producer Gil Masuda, who provides a neo-eighties synthfunk bomb over which Sauks flaunts his singing chops (this is a surprise delicacy, as Masuda is not often heard since his 2006 Big Black Lincoln project). Bursting pianos glide over huge gated digi-snares on this gem, the featureless version of which also appears on the B-side.

Review: Cheeba's Prestige All Stars carries on strong with its cut-and-paste beats/soul edits series. 'I Got You' tops up the trailblazing, quickfire repertoire with a dust-caked window into the past, by way of well-crafted, surround-mixed breakbeats and a gritty gospel sample on the A. Complementary to this comes the instrumental, highlighting the fact that the fact that the vocal sample is indeed the cherry on top; it hardly 'needs' said vocal to convince the listener to dance, though it does round things out with utter finesse.

Review: Rome's Maledetta Discoteca Records present their latest pride and joy, an impeccable emulation by the Neapolitan Funkool Orchestra of the indelible sigla (aka single) style of Italo disco popular throughout the 1970s. With the creation of an anthem in mind, the idea for 'Maledetta Discoteca' (taking its namesake from the label) and 'Tiene 'O Tiempo' was born after the musicians found time and space to scour their own 7" vinyl vaults, noticing for the first time that many of the singles they'd collected over time were in fact theme songs from TV and radio shows. With lead vocals from Valentina Conte, the A-side's lyrics deal thematically with the legendary disco club La Discoteca, while the B is just as insouciant and effortless, adding more spice and horn section to the brew.

Review: Sunsay & The Soul Surfers' cover of William DeVaughn's 'Be Thankful For What You Got' is a smooth and classy rendition of the 1974 original. The funk and soul influences are evident in the laid-back groove and sultry vocals, creating a timeless and sophisticated sound. With Massive Attack's 1991 cover also gaining recognition, this song has become a staple in the genres of funk and soul. The 7' vinyl reissue from 2024 remains faithful to the original release, capturing the essence of the track in its entirety. The B-side features the instrumental version, providing musicians and DJs with a versatile tool for sampling and remixing. 'Be Thankful For What You Got' serves as a reminder to appreciate the things we have, both big and small, and to find contentment in the present moment.

Originally released in 1982 by the Chicago soul group Maxx Traxx, the records are scarce for a small price. When word got around that the record would get reissued, it sparked interest from Another Taste to do a cover for the flip side and honour the event, an excellent homage to the original while injecting their own creativity and showmanship. Impossible to choose a favorite, let's just enjoy both excellent pieces of spacey funk music. This edition comes on purple 7".

Review: Early on in Muslimgauze's (Bryn Jones') career, the musician released two ultra-mysterious releases on the equally mysterious label Hessian, which some speculate might've been comprised entirely of Jones himself. Hammer & Sickle was one of these two early LPs from the faux Arabic auteur, and was notable for its distinct lack of any back cover artwork (who needs a visual stimulus when you've got such great music on board?). Though still indicative of Jones' work as Muslimgauze, superfans will note that this release sounds a little more formative than some of his later releases, owing to its lessened use of Middle Eastern instrumentation and sparser production in general. B-sider 'Fear Of Gadaffi' is the most intermittent in this regard, revelling more than anything in the simple effect of spring delay on sampled, freeform perc hits.

I'm Not Strong Enough
Review: Shotgun Records follow up recent successes reissuing the likes of Sam Dees, Eddie Floyd and Sir Ted Ford, and now re-press this in-demand number by Sandra Wright. 'I Come Running Back' is a favourite among soul fans, but this is the first time it has been issued as a single, one of nine tracks recorded with producer David Johnson at Broadway Sound in Muscle Shoals in 1974. Intended for an album project entitled The Wounded Woman, the masters were leased to Stax Records for a promised release, but only two singles were released on the Truth sublabel before Stax collapsed in bankruptcy in December 1975. It was only much later in 1989 that The Wounded Woman heard a full release, after which 'I Come Running Back' exploded in popularity, as it was always destined to do. The song is a blissful glitterer, brimming with bittersweet coming-of-age lessons of reconciliation and nostalgia.

A titan of the US underground singer-songwriter scene, Alan Bishop is best known as a co-founder of Sun City Girls and owner of the labels Abduction and Sublime Frequencies. His less-known alias Alvarius B has nonetheless seen an extended panhandle of releases at least since 1994, and plays host to a string of 'characters' and sub-pseudonyms. One such 'charakter', as he calls them, is Karaoke, whose forte is covers of noir cinematic rock classics. Here we've got two dark rundowns; on the A, a dark rundown of Ennie Morricone's 'Solo Nostalgia' from the film Comandamenti per un Gangster, and on the B, a version of Indonesia's finest Koes Plus' 'Tiba-Tiba Ku Menangis', whom Bishop had already interpreted as part of the band Koes Barat. Both detail Bishop's talent as a rarely-performed alter-ego, a cosmopolite solo-entertainer.

One piece of history that seems to get overlooked is the transition from radio to TV that helped the music move from a regional activity to a national and cultural phenomenon. While the big New York radio stations took the credit, Spectrum City was doing its own thing just down the road. Not only did it feature a show by Dre Dre and T-Money (which would later evolve it to MTV YO Raps!) but it showcased the birth of Public Enemy as well. Originally released in 2021 on promo, these tracks pay respect to Public Enemy's earlier days when the original group was just getting started at Spectrum City, and if you'reconfused by the name Enemy Radio, note that the legendary rap crew changed to it after the departure of Flavor Flav from the group.

Review: Apparel Wax on Apparel Music records has recently started a 7" series of which this is the third instalment of. These 45 DJ friendly records are sure to be hits with house music DJs and fans both. The music does the talking as the tracks are simply called 'Track 1' and 'Track 2'. The first blends jazz, funk into a house instrumental frenzy that has all the makings of a classic late night success. The second one is quite unusual and unique, adding a broken almost jungle beat that goes great with the piano. This gives us some real early 90s UK rave flashbacks! This versatile 7" should go over great with those who hear it!

Review: Jayse and Steve P are two DJs and producers hailing from Australia. As is often the way with music as quality and neat as this, they keep a generally low profile but their edits are deft and crispier-than-crisp, with their instrumentals - here titled simple 'Boogie A' and 'Boogie B' - sounding production-sharp enough to cut glass. Bordering on freestyle and funk, these are short slices of beat dazzlement, and also function as perfect songwriter fuel too.

Review: This is the third installment in the Local Sugar Diggers Series from Scruniversal in which old and rare records from the label head's friend's collections get reworked and edited. This one is a collab between ScruScru and an equally passionate digger from Cyprus known as Dwaal. Both tunes offer quite different looks but with great results. The first is the steamy and loose-limbed 'Destination? Funk!' with its squelchy bass and neat guitar riffs, while the flipside is a super deep and lush downtempo jam, 'Camelot Chill'. This one has romantic sax notes and gentle grooves with jazzy keys finishing it in style.

Review: 17studio double up as both visual designer and indie label and it's this combination that amounts to the roots-radical sonic spectacle we hear here. 'King Of My Castle' is a regnant lyrical musing, hearing a collaborative work with producer and multi-instrumentalist Bob Vito, and with additional vocals and percussion by the band Riciclette, for an impressive meditation on the nature of power and its perverse enjoyments. First produced in 1998 by Wamdue Project, this fresh reggae cover is best remembered as an era-definer, and this cover and Version extends the monarchy's rule by way of bubbling wahs, boxy fills, and owwing basses; simple, clean, effective instruments of force.

Batman (Gary The Tall v Exotic Gardens Reversion)
Review: Emotional Rescue takes another trip into the twisted world of post-punk dubs, electronics and oddities here at the hands of DJ, collector and radio host Gary The Tall. The original comes from German duo and new wave innovators Die Radierer whose pop-reggae jam 'Batman' is irresistibly catchy with its low-slung beats and lazy, sun-kissed melodies. It appeared on 1983's In Hollywood and was recorded at their home studio on a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder. Gary The Tall's remix finds him teaming up with Aaron Coyles under his new alias of Exotic Gardens and the results are loopy and dubbed out to perfection.

The title track is a catchy and funky house track that while the remix is a bit more Balearic and beachy. Made up entirely of sampled grooves from the deepest depths of Afro funk - and serving as a neat counterpart to their recent 'Disco Tape' series - an unknown hand, or collection of hands, make quick, choppy work of boxy drum breaks, six-string highlife bursts, raggy piano riffs and cymbal-happy breakdowns, which verge on the drawn-out side. Both emerging talents from Spain, this dream team are an unmistakably apt pairing, their title track hooking us in with tritone Rhodes, pop-out FX, and transitory fills to die for. The B's 'See The Blues' gives us temporary synaesthesia, allowing us to transcend our temporary melancholy by way of murmured, sampled pep talks and digital arpy flourishes, set against a timbale-ing, bongo-ing forward march.

'All Engines Go' kicks off and is a wildly percussive, textural groove with toms, crashing snares, raw hi-hats and plenty of FX all budding the energy before a mad saw tooth basslines spray about the mix to raise the roof. Review: Tramp Records come at us with an exclusive, ninja-lethal wax, chucked squarely in our direction: the debut 7" single from Natural Life lays down two extra-special instrumental jazz-funk cuts for our pleasure. Never heard before on the tiny label, and with little background info out there to scour (we're pretty sure it's not the same Natural Life as the upbeat funk band active throughout the 1990s), all that's left is to use our ears. Both versions of the eponymous track are essentially an obverse and inverse of the same theme, except for the fact that one is funky in the fast, riveting sense; the other in the slower, sultrier sense. Both are nonetheless rapid, to-the-point heaters, and can be easily deployed and exploited in many a party - or afterparty - context.

Review: For the seventh release on the all-limiteds Florence Funk imprint, we're met with two rare gems of the nu-funk and soul variety from Florence, the one themself. On the A, 'Funky Feeling' impresses with its dynamic yet still crunchy bottling of the funk, with all its *je ne sais qoui* intact, and in which occasional Omar Santana-style cut-ups can be heard, to giggle-inducing effect. The B, meanwhile, brings us the 'Heat' and insists we 'feel' it, but we hardly need to be told, as we're willing partners in this dance; this track, like the one before it, places its kicks and snare-clap layers front and centre, retaining the central sample but encouraging an extra danceable flavour, not usually heard on original disco recordings.

Review: Albertan experimenter Dylan Khotin follows up last year's full-length with an equally impressionistic two-tracker and logical successor, 'Alterac Acid/Mornings II'. Both tracks here are curious digi-Balearic offerings, with spacious episcopies of sound cast across meandering landscapes once seemingly trawled by space invaders and/or deep-cosmos probes. A nearly aimless acid line unfurls across the A-side, locking things into a nice stasis, before a more subdued, dare say clipped stab-womp drives the action of the B-track, which hardly so much as teases its drum line, nor avails itself of a need to even use drums at all (at points) to compel the listener into a driven, awestruck state of bliss.

Review: This 2024 edition marks the return of Joe Bataan, via the same track that made his name in 2004. Vampi Soul first welcomed the Latin Soul king to the label two decades back, facilitating the release of his 2005 album Call My Name. The pre-release singles for the album were 'Chick-A-Boom' and 'Cycles Of You', packed onto a single 7"; these quickly became DJs' favourites and have thus since remained long out of print. As it was twenty years ago, 'Chick-A-Boom' is a simultaneously upbeat but ghostly track, with Bataan's vocals quadrupling up in a wall of sound while providing the vibe equivalent of a Jackie Chan flick. 'Call My Name', meanwhile, goes heavy on the clavichord and synth whistle, as Bataan revels in a funereal theme, dancing, thundersticking into the great beyond.

Following in the traditional soul 45 rpm single format, 'Tear On My Chin', comes in the form of a sweet ballad side with a funk side on the flip. A staccato piano jabbing, r&b Philly soul ditty to the letter, the song hears Aitkens, the city's musical heart and soul, ruminate on love lost, culminating in the symbolic "tear on my chin", a dualistic portrayal of mourning and carrying on despite the pain.

Fitzgerald is best known as a pioneer of folk punk, famously channelling his sardonic wit into a fleeting, light but somehow also epical sound. 'Punch' first surfaced in 2009 as a one-off single released under Crispin Glover's remit; it's now heard once more in both versions, tracking incendiary denunciations of politics on Fitzgerald's part, amid a suicidal, guitar-driven ascension into the air.

Foat’s latest full-length record displays the musician’s lifelong, self-described “love-hate relationship” with the keys, which he says began in childhood, when he fell off a piano stool at his aunt’s house. A domestic homage, 'Spider Plant Blues' fittingly pays tribute to two houseplants that sit on Greg’s bedside tables, and move periodically depending on his whims; ‘Spider Plant Blues’ is an evening high-flyer for electric piano, unbothered drums and backing strings, while ‘Snake Plant Shuffle’ is a darker and drier organism backed by arpeggiating sytnhy blossomings in the stereo mix.

Following up her debut single 'Fo Yelle' on Philophon, the Ghanaian Frafra Soul singer returns backed by an eight-member troupe, made up of young talents from the highlife scene of Kumasi, Ghana. 'Uh Ah Song' and its inverse counterpart 'Otoma Da Naba' are slick, clean and joyous daytime jaunts, with the former track lyrically meditating on familial and childhood themes while effortlessly pinning down a difficult-to-maintain-for-most uptempo highlife backbeat and improv. The B-side, meanwhile, pays tribute to the supreme terrestrial creator central to Adooni's native Frafra community, and centres on a heptatonic electronic, nigh acid riff and lo-fi texture with a "je ne sais qoui" that, in our view, renders it the tune of the year so far.

Soul Junction have released a steadily growing number of 7”s by the ‘70s soul crooner; they were first alerted to his talents circa 2012, when they heard two of his mid-seventies staples and were instantly charmed. ‘Don’t Pop The Question (If You Can’t Take The Answer)’ is a deliciously titled, and even better-sounding, classic track from that time. We’ve never encountered the phrase “pop a question” before, but we’re definitely not questioning this one: with a serene femme backing refrain and a popout wall-of-sound mix, Cheatham’s paean to wresting oneself from the clutches of use and abuse in love. If you’re tired of taking chances, cop this record.

Punk/Hardcore
Review: Daisy Chainsaw commanded a unique spell over the English punk and garage rock scenes of the early 90s. Never quite totally placeable, their earliest gigs involved frolicking around onstage in soiled gowns and strewing rag dolls and grapevines across stages. Forming part of their debut EP at the turn of the '90s, 'Love Your Money' became the bands breakout sensation hit, the song being a satirical rip-roarer of snarling punk and rockabilly, with a highly-strung backbeat and lyrics decrying the record industry's avaricious ways; PSA to artists, they just love your money, or the money they think they can make off you!

Brujeria
Review: One of several new Krafty Kuts edits to fly through the floodgates of late, this 7” amounts to the whopping 28th edition of the esteemed Friday’s Funky series. This time hearing the editors handle and reappropriate a swathe of obscure Latin music samples, of lord knows what origin, ‘Colombia’ amounts to a slick two-toner backed by brass riffs and samples rap interjections. B-side ‘Brujeria’ is of a similar quality and verve.

Get Ready For The Young Folks
Dre's Night
Review: France's faves Battle Weapons deliver two heady new edits, only for those ready. On the A comes an ingenious, probably never-done-before, almost laughably why-hasn't-anyone-else-ever-thought-of-this-until-now breakbeat rendition of Peter Bjorn & John's 'The Young Folks'. To be frank, they've not done much besides beef up the backbeat a little, but a simple sprucing up is sometimes all a tune needs. On the flip comes a phattened version of 'Forgot About Dre' mashed up with the Azzido Da Bass UK garage classic 'Dooms Night', also produced to hilariously, surreally arresting effect.

I Can't Understand It
Loleatta Disco Flip
Review: Expert record collector, skilled DJ, Moodyman collaborator and beatmaker Andres aka DJ Dez is back not long after the release of his last album with a new 7" on David A-P's Hot Pot Records. He opens up this one with 'I Can't Understand It' which has the exact sort of dusty drums and subtle hip-hop stylings to the groove that you would expect of this storied groove specialist. It will get the floor popping off in no time and on the flip, he shows off his skills on the MPC by chopping up 'Loleatta Disco Flip' with plenty of hefty drum work and a sprinkling of percussion that keeps whitings moving. Another irresistible drop from the Detroit mainstay.

Trans-Europe Express (Mr K 7" beats)
Trans-Europe Express (Mr K 7" part II)
Review: The crucial Mr K is back with a special repress for Record Store Day 2024. This one throws it back to his two superb edits of Kratwerk's 'Trans Euro Express' which is cited often as the start of techno. Side A offers stripped-down, bare drum bones, with naked drums shaped into futuristic fusion, while Part II adds synthetic context. Deconstructing Kraftwerk's original sci-fi masterpiece at a slow, smouldering pace, it presents a classic in an entirely new light. This release unlocks doors of serious DJ creativity and should be snapped up quickly before it's gone again.

Here's To You
Review: As E Live, Eli Hurwitz is such a big part of the Star Creature Universal Vibrations family that they gave him his own sub-label, Elivity Records. His latest fantastic 45 doesn't appear on either of those imprints, but rather parent label Tugboat Editions. For those who like authentic-sounding revivalist boogie, we'd recommend picking this up - both tracks are re-inventions of old tunes with E Live's colourful, synth-powered twist. Check first 'Make Me Move', where glossy female vocals rise above a squelchy bassline, shimmering synths and unfussy drum machine percussion. Even better though is Hurwitz's flip-side cover of Skyy classic 'Here's To You' - a boogie gem that he re-invents as as a deeper, smoother and dreamier slab of neo-boogie squelchiness.

Bizarre Cut 'N' Paste Ride
Summer Cyde
Review: Smoove AKA Jonathan Scott Watson brings us Bizarre Cut 'N' Paste Ride for the most recent Wack Records release. The producer is known for using his cut up style of east coast flavor. On the A-side, 'Bizarre Cut 'N' Paste Ride' uses Pharcyde tracks and edits them seamlessly like a DJ would. Focusing in on the original instrumentals, he creates a jazzy sound with them. 'Summer Cyde' expands upon this theme while using the all-time classic 'Passin Me By' in the mix. This is like having a dub plate of Pharcyde cuts to your own personal bag. Sounds like these will never get old.
