Review: Since debuting the project in 2019, FSK24 has become an outlet for the more psychedelic and hallucinatory aural explorations of French producer Chris Carrier, an artist who has been serving up deep house and tech-house treats (under a variety of aliases) since the late 1990s. That love of trippy, mid-90s style techno psychedelia comes to the fore once more on the first FSK24 EP of 2023. Check first opener 'South Aitken', an intergalactic electro explosion blessed with deep, foreboding bass and smothered in echoing electronics, undulating acid motifs and ambient techno sonics, before admiring the stabbing acid bass, LSD-trip electronics, and rolling acid house beats of 'Alphaville'. Arguably best of all, though, is the locked-in house shuffle of 'Ghostpoint', where echoing acid riffs and Brown Album era Orbital style motifs catch the ear.

Review: Brazilian producer Processman is something of a rising star, albeit one awaiting a breakthrough (most of his previous appearances have been on compilations or via collaborations). This first solo single for File Under Disco, featuring vocalist Cody, may well provide that breakthrough. Opener 'Adupe' is genuinely brilliant - a cheery, carnival-ready nu-disco number rich in sing-along Portuguese vocals, thickset sub-bass, starry electronics, colourful boogie synths and infectious Latin percussion. Razor'N'Tape co-founder JKriv provides a fine remix, offering a toughened-up groove, heavier percussion and more use of the original mix's short TB-303 motifs, before Processman and Cady return with nu-disco-goes-house jam 'Sou Biana'. Dicky Trisco provides an inspired rework, adding a classic Latin disco feel - via Clavinets, piano solos and sweeping strings - to take the track to another level altogether.

Review: The Life Classics label is back with more gems to light up your day (or night.) This is a fine fifth volume of edits from Sanctuary that tweak some timeless disco sounds for modern dance floors. There is a glorious sense of soul to 'Feelings' with its boogie-fied drums and soaring vocal harmonies perfectly ready to melt your heart. 'Get Away' is a harder edged cut with raw claps and lively rhythms all topped off with impassioned vocals. 'Running' is high on 80s vibes with its male vocal and glossy synths all irresistible to anyone with a beating heart and 'So Busy' closes down with a deeper, more sentimental feel.

This new album, Portrayals, is a collection of some of her best work in the field and it also includes a new version of 'Blue Moon' you will not have heard before. Review: Mindhelmet is one of the freshest underground labels out there right now. It has excelled at mining a rich vein of electronic sounds where space music, techno, electro and minimal all combine into fresh new forms. Wickham is next up with some colourful and creative party sounds on this 11th label EP. 'Lost Grain' is all bouncy bass and splashy cymbals, 'Busker' is a stripped-back tech pumper and 'Crowded' has lively and playful synth stabs that will get any floor vibing. The flipside offers three more similar tight, vivid yet spaced out dancefloor gems.

Review: Brand new label for your radar, French platform BasSskin Records come correct with this powerful double-A from pioneering Belgian duo The Untouchables and the visionary DJ Draai. The former roll out with a super slinky and tense slab of percussive pressure while the latter takes things on more of a spiritual tip, applying bags of space in the mix and mystic eastern instruments. Review: Like much of Cabinet's catalogue, this label debut from rising star Ed Herbst - co-owner of Beste Modus - explores the deeper, warmer and more intergalactic end of the tech-house spectrum, delivering cuts that could also be embraced by those who play deep house and techno. Our pick of an extremely strong bunch is A-side 'Make Your Own Reality', where gentle sci-fi synth sounds, bubbly electronic melodies and deep space chords cluster around rolling house beats and a toasty bassline. Elsewhere, 'Three In One' is a tougher and gnarlier excursion tailor-made for peak-time sets, while 'Drippin' sees Herbst reach for sweaty drums, dubby sub-bass, twinkling lead lines and the most tactile of chords.

Review: Active since the early 1980s, Robert Ffrench is a curio in the reggae scene, with a penchant for extra drum machines and a distinctly wacky sound. Emblematic of Ffrench's approach to music-making is the album 'Wondering', which here comes reissued via 333. Entirely themed around the tumult of Ffrench's relationships while living in 1980s Jamaica, hilarities like 'I Can't Finance You' and 'Heart Breaker' reflect the artist's intense thoughts on the various women in his life. Review: Andrew Bunsell and Tom Rellen comprise Staran Wake, the rapturous electronic music project traversing icy wonderworlds and capturing convincing musical analog-ies of them. Seven years of making music together preceded this sublime opus, after which a further four years were poured into its polishing off. Sublime aweworlds like opener 'The Watcher' use uncanny sounds and samples, as if evoking the image of moving across great plains of snow on horseback. Elsewhere, minimalist composition (as on 'Moth Syndrome') and far-out concepts filtered through physical-mimicky synths ('Ocean Trapped In Jurassic Caves') make for a unique multifaceted trip across miles.

Review: Taking his name from a now-submerged island in the Danube, Bucharest's hotly demanded composer Ada Kaleh prints another 12" that is sure to sell out like the others. This time, the single on the docket is Side B from his 2018 double single 'Roua Diminetti / O seara de ragaz', featuring two remixes from the likes of Norway's space-disco wizard Prins Thomas and Solid Groove's founder and Sheffield's finest Aubrey. The original single is a dark one to move to, a driving, subtle beat underpins the sensational percussion - perfect for the middle of the night. Aubrey takes things in a completely different direction, taking a far more noisy and in-your-face approach with a mysterious twist; Odd sounding percussion and synths fly in and out through the 'RMX' that give it an otherworldly feel. Thomas picks things up the only way he knows how, with his distinguishable brand of space-age techno-disco, the bassline giving this particular cut a production-line rhythm. The perfect soundtrack to construct your robot army to.

Review: The Lahaar is a Trans-Tasman collaboration between Julien Dyne, Horatio Luna and Surprise Chef's Lachlan Stuckey, featuring Mara TK and Toby Laing on vocals. Channeling a heady cocktail of inspirations from New York to Lagos, the supergroup easily moves through different styles in quick succession, from uptempo boogie to mega-ploddy dub. Review: While all of NuNorthern Soul's releases are delightfully warming, sun-baked and mood-enhancing, the label's latest release - a new EP from imprint stalwart and long-serving American producer Marshall Watson - is especially impressive. Musically, it's sun-bright and sonically enveloping, offering a calming and colourful bath for the head, heart and soul. Interestingly, there's a touch more dancefloor focus than you may expect - see the Balearic-acid shuffle of 'Open Sky', the grandiose, enveloping chords and bustling breakbeats of 'The Landscape' and the tactile Balearic nu-disco of 'Sweet Sounds' - but wholeheartedly horizontal moments are never far away. In this category you'll find delightful opener 'High Desert' and Seahawks' accompanying remix of the same track, which is as magical as you'd expect it to be.
