Kalakuta Show (14:41)
Don't Make Ganran Ganran (16:12)
Review: There are a bunch of reissues of classic Fela Kuti albums dropping right now which is always going to be good news for collectors and Afrobeat lovers a like. As was often the case with his music, this album Kalakuta Show from 1976 was a way of him taking revenge on the military regime that attacked and brutalized him two years prior when the police mounted a large scale raid on Kalakuta Republic incoming Fela's own heavily guarded compound. They were the second raids in eight months and left Fela with scalp wounds and a broken arm, and us with this most remarkable musical retort.

Review: Skep Wax's first Under The Bridge compilation, released in 2022, reunited the bands, songwriters and producers who populated cult early '90s indie label Sarah Records. This hotly anticipated follow-up repeats the trick, presenting 20 recently recorded cuts from the Bristol-based imprint's original roster of artists. It too, is a hugely successful - and understandably nostalgic - exercise, with hi9ghlights including the bright-and-breezy indie jangliness of Action Painting's 'Just Who Are The Cockleshell Heroes', the shoegaze-influenced dream pop haziness of Soundwire's 'Everything Is Real', the near Balearic soft focus shuffle of 'Double Nine' by GNAC, and the saucer-eyed excellence of The Orchids' 'A Final Love Song'.

Review: 1994's original pressing of Steely & Clevie's outstanding leftfield production with Johnny Clarke's vocals is well worth inspecting, but you might struggle to find one these days, and it'll be pricey if you do, because it's become something of a classic 45. Thankfully it gets reissued here with A-side original 'Leggo Violence' rolling lazy drums while the Clarke vocals soar high and sweet despite what they sing about. On the flip is a smooth rolling version that allows that super bassline to do its thing free from any distraction, and all with extra dub goodness.

Review: The NOID imprint out of Belgium returns with its second vinyl drop, and this time takes you into some serene realms of breakbeat-driven pleasure court yes of Dave NA. His Altura EP opens with 'Escape', a wide open and airy mix of wispy synths and dusty, floating breaks. 'Elevation' has a more churning rhythm and dubby undercurrent and 'Pulse' (feat Freq444) has a hypnagogic feel, smeared vocal cries and more raw percussive patterns. 'Novox' (feat Freq444) shuts down with the most heavy and moody breakfast of the lot, a certain jungle swagger and plenty of heavy bass.

Review: Originally released back in the early '80s, Veronica Vasicka's label has done its audience a fine service by re-releasing Portrait by Swiss duo Guyers Connection. Full of self-conscious vocals and in places decidedly lo-fi synth lines, it's surprising and disappointing that this collection wasn't a big hit first time round. After all, both "Pogo of Techno" and "Keep the City Clean" are as catchy as an oddball Yazoo, "Die Grille" is a jaw-dropping, windswept synth composition and "National Und Stander" sees the duo fuse ponderous piano lines with pulsing, rippling basslines. Best of all though is "Ein Glas Voll Gurken" a breathy synth-pop song that could have conquered charts had it been sung in English.

Review: Rather bizarrely, Fela's London Scene was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 1971, but didn't get a UK release until the mid 1990s. This is the first time it has appeared on wax since. While the legendary Afrobeat pioneer and his equally revered backing band, Africa '70, may have been in unusual surroundings, the music showcased on the album was pure Nigerian Afrobeat gold. With Fela in fine form on the mic, and Africa '70 providing typically punchy, horn-heavy backing, tracks such as "E Gbe Mi O", "Buy Africa", and "Fight To The Finish" are every bit as good as anything they recorded in their Lagos studio. "Who're You", with its' changes of intensity and gentle progressions, is particularly good.

Review: Up next for Adam Beyer's esteemed Drumcode imprint is Enrico Sangiuliano, a Milan based DJ/producer originally from Reggio Emilia who has been been active on the Italian scene since the early noughties, playing everywhere from clubs to illegal raves. His work of late has been released on sister label Truesoul, Alleanza, Gem Records, Octopus Recordings and Rhythm Converted. On "Moon Rocks", Sangiuliano provides a euphoric, hands in the air anthem with soaring synth leads and seriously humming Reese bassline over a high octane beat. Also on the A side is the mad diva vocal breakdown on "Ghettoblaster" which soon gives way to a dark and tunnelling epic. Finally on the flip, we have two versions of "Dutch Kiss" but for our money it's all about the sombre and emotive IDM vibe of the Inner remix.

Review: Since its release in 1997, David Lynch's neo-noir-horror, Lost Highway, has become something of a cult classic. The accompanying soundtrack album, here reissued on weighty double vinyl, is similarly revered in some circles. Put together by Nine Inch Nails' frontman Trent Reznor, composer Angelo Badalamenti, and punk-turned-producer Barry Adamson, it's a mish-mash of darkly intense songs (Bowie, Smashing Pumpkins, Lou Reed and Rammstein all contribute), and the kind of creepy, other-worldly soundscapes that have always been a feature of Lynch's work. It's arguably the latter tracks, composed by Badalementi and Adamson, which remain creepily potent all these years on.

Review: When Soccer Mommy dropped 2022's Sometimes Forever, we made the rather painful dad joke that the third album represented a hat trick for the band with a football-influenced name. Let's start by offering another apology to you and the group for the cheap penmanship, and move on. Now presenting LP number four, let's avoid the temptation to us words like 'haul' (or, considering these guys are US-based, 'hambone'... oops) and cut straight to the chase. Or at least the tunes.

Another year, another great collection of alternative rock stunners that are at once spiky yet easy going, disaffected but hopeful, sparse but musically packed. 'Blossom', for example, pits the ever-incredible voice of Sophie Allison with gliding, mournful strings, and a background quiet so powerful you can hear fingers sliding down the guitar neck. Next in line, 'Last Girl' ushers in an uptempo, bouncing rock 'n' roll vibe, before 'Skin' looks to shoegaze for at least some of its inspiration. Excellent stuff, we could go on.

Review: Full of Hell join forces with Primitive Man for the new release Suffocating Hallucination, a collaborative record that is followed up by both bands touring. The music is controlled chaos with lots of harsh sonics and violent textures across the tracks which all drag you kicking and screaming through pure metal misery and torture. Walls of guitar noise, heavy doom and gloom atmospheres and plenty of distortion define this most abrasive of listens - which will no doubt be a joy to the ears of hardcore metal fans. What a monster of an album and a real showcase of sonic scuzzery.

Many have longed for it to be reissued and made more readily available and now they get the wish thanks to Japan's Groove Diggers series on P-Vine. This was originally a private press record which explains its scarcity after it was recorded in 1997 in Minneapolis as the one and only album by the singer-songwriter and producer Ernie Story. It's a seamless fusion AOR meets modern soul with laidback grooves and a hint of gospel to really elevate it. A must-own record for soul collectors with plenty of emotional high points.

Review: Laima Adelaide's new 12" on Shahr Farang is as deft as sound design gets. The hugely limited 12" is all about quiet artistry and mastering the small things. The A-side 'Empty Mind' is a delightfully sparse and empty yet potent piece with supple, suggestive rhythms and sustained chords that are grainy and lo-fi. It's amazing just how absorbing such little sound can be. 'Pattern' then takes up the whole of the flip with a more pulsing and dynamic rhythm but the whole tune still seems to float through space with distant starry twinkles, deep space energies and a hopeful sense of melodic beauty.

Whatever he has on his cornflakes, we want some, because he's done it again here, this time with pal Kelper. 'What I Want' takes up the whole of the a-side and is mix of everything from deep house to minimal to Chicago jack. It's a busy, restless tune with a hooky vocal that keeps you locked. 'This' is a more tripped-out 5AM groove with warped deep space sound designs and airy drums that float. 'Lucid State' taps into a dreamy 90s tech house vibe that is utterly compelling.

Review: Long Island outfit The Lemon Twigs frequently leave critics confounded and confused, in part because their shape-shifting style tends towards the over-the-top and grandiose. Rooted in a love of 70s glam, the theatrical rock pomp of Queen and a tongue-in-cheek love of overblown rock operas, they seem to delight regular listeners while rubbing reviewers up the wrong way. On Everything Harmony, their new album, they've re-set their influences once more, delivering a blend of folk-rock, Simon & Garfunkel style folk revivalism, prime Beatles and the close harmony bliss of the Beach Boys, with a dash of fuzzy garage rock and giddy psychedelia thrown in. It's well-crafted and expertly executed stuff that's hugely easy-going and enjoyable, whatever sniffy critics may say,

This is a previously unreleased record made between 1995 and 1999 and it comes from the same pool of sound as that LP. None of the tunes you will have heard before and that are more great windows into the minds of Ronnie Lion and Andrea Terrano.

Marking a departure from the cool, carefree persona he became known for following his previous releases, the standout figure of Compton rap emerges as a more matured version of his once roguish iteration. Tracing the themes of success and making it against all odds, this album marks a key point of Tee's career, where the Likwit Crew mastermind was on the precipice of Dre-induced stardom.

Review: It could not get much more late-1960s into early-1970s folk rock if it tried. Band name: Rainbird. Album title: Maiden Flight. General vibe: somewhere between a psychedelic ultraworld, late night blues basement and trip to a remote island to join an off-grid community. Painting quite a vivid picture there, admittedly, this 1971 rarity proves exactly why contemporary musicians can try to emulate this era but will never truly recreate it. Simply put, it's impossible to commit in the same way today. Rant and questionable point aside, Rainbird's uncovered gem is an epic masterpiece in no uncertain terms. From the wistful croonerdom of 'Stormdance (Part 1)' and its Wurlitzer powered chaotic seizure follow up l ('Stormdance (Part 2)'), to the lead guitar solo mastery of 'Man On the Mountain' and the quiet, reflective journeyman stuff on 'Sailboat', it manages to include every totem of this scene, without sounding cliched.

Review: For those too young to remember the days of glitch-house and electro-house at the turn of the noughties (think Herve, Switch, Claude Vonstroke etc), Fake Blood was one of the true masters of the style. He released a swathe of big records for Cheap Thrills and others, with the two tracks collected here - both of which date from 2009 - being the biggest. A-side 'I Think I Like It' is a superb example of the style, with the producer expertly cutting up a pleasingly silly and over-the-top disco-pop number and turning it into sweat-soaked, hands-aloft gold. 'Mars', meanwhile, gains its dancefloor power from a frankly filthy, mind-altering bassline-turned-lead-line, around which crispy drums, breakbeats and Mylo-esque synth stabs make their presence felt.

Review: The Midnight managed to sell out their entire 2022 US tour, which tells you something about their reputation stateside. It's not hard to hear why their work resonates so strongly on the westside of the Atlantic, either, with the band conjuring up a strange and unarguably heady brew that at once makes us feel like we've stepped through the mirror into the beachside concert scene from The Lost Boys, climbed into an open top Cadillac and hit a highway of wide open vistas, and stumbled upon a glam rock concert.
A blend of Americana, synth pop, and rock, it's high impact stuff that feels born for big stages, and cannot help but convey a sense of powerful emotion - as though the Drive soundtrack had merged with Slippery When Wet for a turbo-charged journey into a sound that could almost invoke a time gone by, but upon closer inspection, seems to belong neither here nor there, but instead in its own place.

This one comes on double metallic gold vinyl and finds the country musician known for his baritone voice and flashy wardrobe in fine form. It arrived only in 2022, three years after his debut Pony. Peck is a real trailblazer as he openly identifies as queer in the famously conservative world of country music and though attempts have been made to unmask him, no one has yet succeeded. Like on his debut, this album investigates themes of love, loss and loneliness with bold story arcs.

Nico Lahs - "Happenstance" (5:58)
Review: Local Talk has quietly but assuredly become a vital voice in there underground. It has done so over the last 13 years and now makes that occasion by doing what it does best - serving up timeless club sounds that mix under many different subgenres. This is another feel-good offering from four of the label's talents or as the label puts it, "producers that we love and respect." There is funky bass and soulful vibes from the Soul Renegades opener, Wipe The Needle's 'Light Years Away' is a more serene cosmic journey and The James L'Estraunge Orchestra offer a broken beat and jazzed-up dancer in 'Broken Spells.' Nico Lahs brings some cuddly depths to his slow-mo house jam 'Happenstance.'

Review: The Alpha Transmissions EP is a new project from Dubbyman that has been long in the making. The always classy producer brings his trademark deep house sound to Inner Shift Music with label owners Brad P and Rai Scott getting in on the action. 'Transmission #1' is smooth, serene and dubbed out deep house with cosmic energy, while 'In The Space (Song For Joey)' is a more loose-limbed groove peppered with gentle percussion.'Transmission #2' first comes as a Man-Drake edit that is widescreen and drenched in prog rock guitar licks and as a Rai Scott remix that is more rolling and heady. A typically versatile package from Dubbyman.

Review: The irrepressible Plant43 spent a bunch of time over the winter of 2022 and 2023 writing some red hot new music. This is the first drop of what we're told is going to be a limited edition series showcasing what he made and it comes on lovely orange vinyl. 'Fierce Machines' races out of the blocks with edgy hits and celestial chords over a dynamic electro rhyth. 'Silent Core' then dials things back to a more empty and atmospheric sound with zippy leads and rueful chord work. 'Dark Veneer' is a busy mix of tightly sequenced melodic patterns over a jittery groove and 'Life In The Pod' is a clean, crisp, shiny metallic trip.

Review: ZKY who minimal fans will know as one half of Cab Drivers now finds himself on fine French label Phonogramme with a new EP that offers up his lovely and warm analogue house jams. 'Love Train' kicks off with a nagging, wobbly baseline between silvery drum loops and fleshy bass. 'Instant Delight' has the sort of synths that bring to mind deep Detroit techno and they're paired with over sized hi hats and a serene sense of futurism. Last of all is the most playful - 'Punky Music' with James Brown samples, smeared chords and steamy vocals.

Review: Rampart takes us to Houston for some glorious soul that gets specially reissued for the first time ever for this year's Record Store Day. It comes from TSU Toronados, who were the house band for Ovide, and if you can find an original it will cost you over L300 on the second-hand market. The A-side is a super mellow groove gem with 'Please Heart Don't Break' packed with emotion, sweet vocals and harmonies. 'Ain't Nothin' Nowhere' on the b-side is a much more energetic cut with up-tempo funk grooves and a barrage of raucous and atmospheric vocals up top. Both are effective dance floor tunes for different reasons.

On its first release titled 'Techno Mafia', he explores 'mega hypnotic minimalism' as heard on the A-side title track, which makes for the perfect afterhours jam which to get those heads down on the dancefloor. Turn over to the other side and you've got the lean and subtle early morning dub of 'Sleep Banger', featuring some truly eerie chords underpinned by clipped yet unrelenting rhythms, which will keep the party going well into Monday morning.

This is a first-ever reissue of it, 33 years after it was first released by the Brazilian pair of Rosanna Guimaraes Tavares and Zelia Nogueira da Fonseca aka Rosanna & Zelia. They left their home in Latin America in 1988 and headed to Europe where they dropped a wealth of albums in Germany into the mid-2000s. Zelia still make music and the pair sang on a house cut by German mainstay Ian Pooley. They wrote this one while on a short trip to Finland for the local label Maumau Music and it got a regional release at the time - and now makes it onto the world stage.

Review: Planet Rhythm's approach to techno is pure and simple, but always effective. The label's sub-series hits an eight relate here with Lenny San serving up some monstrous and macho dub tackle across both sides of this new white 12". 'Matrix' has grainy, gritty chords and hurling great kicks that cannot fail to make a vast warehouse march as one. I Have To Go
Review: Stripped back and tripped-out are the immediate adjectives that spring to mind when painting a picture of Pressure Traxx latest edition to their Silver Series output, 'Instruction EP' from Frankfurt-based Kuyateh. On the A side, we enter onto the side-stepping rhythms and distant, spliced vocals of 'Instruction' before we take an airier, dub-infused turn into 'Nothing to Sea'. On the B-side, 'Zuruck Auf Anfang' pulsates with precise, minimal rhythms and a melancholy-tinged melody that reaches out towards distant horizons. The final track, 'I Have To Go' is the star of a strong bunch, its infectious groove dipping below the surface of cool water - aqueous and bubbling. This is the perfect release for outdoor summer settings and cosy dancefloors alike.

Review: Wooden Shjips and Moon Duo vocalist-guitarist Ripley Johnson seems like the kind of guy who's never going to get boring. Having seduced pretty much everyone in earshot with a unique brand of psychedelic country music, earning the kind of cult following that gets you booked for the equally cult, sorely-missed, and utterly legendary All Tomorrow's Parties festival (RIP), he's continued to explore the possibilities and prospects of that sound.

Garden Party is the fourth LP under his Rose City Band project, and is gorgeous and alluring as ever. Apparently Johnson was inspired by long summer days and nights spent on verandas kicking back and enjoying balmy temperatures, and that feeling emanates from the tracks here. A beautiful collection of crooning guitars within lackadaisical arrangements, capable of transporting you to warmer, slower places.

Not a lot of information on Pepe is out there yet but these timeless beats give you more than enough to go on for now: 'Angels' writhes and weaves in a stark percussive ocean of ice before building up into a huge emotional wave in a similar way to Sully when he's jangling his foxiest materials. 'Birdfeed' is a little more sprightly and sun-kissed. Dreamier pads, lighter percussion but still bites hard when it needs to. Le phew!

There is nothing new or fancy about any of these four cuts but they all do exactly what house music should and that is make you move your feet and feel something inside. A year later they landed on Horn of Plenty with a second album which came on vinyl, and now they offer up a first 45rpm in the form of 'Lunchtime On Earth' on Swedish label I Dischi Del Barone. All four tracks are decidedly short and to the point and sit somewhere between post-rock and experimental with elements of lo-fi, folk and world & country. It's the title track that stands out with its doleful guitars, plenty of echo and drifting, wordless vocal sounds making for a beautifully melancholic vibe.

Review: If there's one collaboration that we have bowed down to over the last few years, it's most certainly this new found friendship between London's Kevin Martin aka The Bug, and American doom metal guitarists, Earth. One wouldn't immediately make the connection between inner-city future-grime music and suburban stoner rock, but the two styles were in perfect unison, and this is because they're both fascinated with dark, looming clouds of bass. Whether that's through virtual synths or badass bass guitars, it doesn't matter, because the mood is mightily present. Concrete Desert is the alliance's debut LP, and it's all guns blazing from start to finish; tunes like "Snakes vs Rats" or "Metal Drone" represent exactly the sort of freshen-up that each respective act needed - on the one hand, The Bug could have done with some more external influences to the melodic constructions, while Earth needed a new framework to enter the minds of a new, European audience. We've dubbed this style 'metal drone', and we're pretty sure that it's gonna stick after you've played it out for a few minutes. A blinding collab, right here.

Review: Nicole "Lady" Wray has reinvented herself in recent years, swapping the contemporary, radio-friendly '90s R&B of her youth for a sound heavily influenced by vintage, 1960s and '70s soul and funk. It's a blend that was explored on last year's superb Queen Alone full-length. The two tracks showcased on this 7" were both featured on that album. "Underneath My Feet" is particularly potent, with Wray offering a rasping, impassioned vocal that seems to soar above the triple-time backing track. "Guilty", with its sweet guitars, harmony backing vocals and rock solid funk breakbeat, sounds a little like some of Sharon Jones' more poignant moments.

He does that again here with a new EP - his debut for the Midgar label out of Berlin - that showcases his stripped-back style over five fresh cuts. Opener 'Zero History' has loopy beats and a moody atmosphere that's dark but alluring then 'Nut Wandel' is another heady and hypotonic cut with undulating bass and deft sound designs while the flipside features a trio of variations on that theme - sleek rhythms and evocative little details that draw you in deep. These might ostensibly be DJ tools, but they sure do elevate a dancefloor in sophisticated ways.

Review: The Fall apparently weren't thrilled with Rough Trade focusing so many resources on the Smiths, not least as it meant the full length video they wanted to make to accompany this, their sixth studio album, would not be possible, while the other band got the money to make one. Mark E Smith and company's response was to produce their own, and in many ways the 52-minute Perverted By Language Bis, directed by multifaceted French enigma Claude Bessy, remains one of the archetypal pieces of Fall iconography. The music isn't bad on its own, either, opening on the relentlessly catchy 'Eat Y'self Fitter', once described as "endlessly cycling rockabilly chug with extra keyboard oddities and sudden music-less exchanges for the chorus." 'Neighbourhood of Infinity' then picks up the pace, and grit, and we're soon in deep. A record that impresses musically and in terms of forward thinking production (see: 'Garden') without sacrificing the grass roots energy of post punk at the time.

His Rave EP collides many different influences from techno to electro, acid to rave, and also chucks in some classic samples to really make the tunes pop. The first is a peak-time breakbeat bruiser with slapping hits and yelping vocals, then 'Hippies Gathering' is a prog techno classic from the late 90s Castle Morten rave scene. Review: Before we even get to the music, shall we talk about this album title? Easily up there with the best named records of all time, thankfully this is matched in the quality of the music itself. All-British blues rock 'n' roll at its grittiest and funkiest, and most musically impressive. A showcase of exquisite guitar and piano work, and songwriting, marks the debut of Chicken Shack, the group founded by Stan Webb, Andy Silvester, and Alan Morley, who also enlisted Christine Perfect, later Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie. Comprising ten predominantly rather short tracks (most are around three minutes), this format only leaves us wanting more as the record plays out. There's the classic heartbroken ode 'Lonesome Whistle Blues', the fraught six string solos of 'See See Baby', and the rowdy bar-in-a-track that is 'San Ho Zay' to get you started, but really everything on here is gold.

Fronted by leader Joe Zawinul, the ensemble evolved subtly throughout their career and it was in 1974 that they dropped this album, Sweetnighter. It proved to be a little more funky and influenced by the emerging t&b of the day than its predecessors and it is also noted for being the last long player the band cut with original bassist Miroslav Vitous, as well as being the band's first album to make it into the Top 100 in the US charts of the day.
