Review: There are few nu-metal bands from the formative late 90s/early 00s scene who achieved the monumental crossover appeal of Linkin Park. From their turntable spinning, frenetic rap-metal beginnings on 2000's global breakout Hybrid Theory, to the refined maturation of their formula on 2003's career-height Meteora, to their Jay-Z collaborative album Collision Course to the shedding of skin and rebranding as a genre-less alternative rock entity on 2007's Minutes To Midnight; as popular and accessible as they were, the band clearly constantly strived for sonic progression. Papercuts collects the highest charting singles from the group over two decades, with the most recent contribution being the previously unreleased 'Friendly Fire' recorded during the sessions for 2017's One More Light, which ultimately serves as the final new piece of recording from the band and vocalist Chester Bennington who would tragically take his own life later that same year. Ignoring the standard sequencing of a greatest hits which often lists the tracks in chronologically released order, here the cuts are compiled to sonically complement each other and reflect the band's ethos rather than a single line commercial pattern. Here is why the anthemic double platinum 'In The End' is juxtaposed with the minimalist rap-rock of MTM banger 'Bleed It Out', or why the previously unreleased fan favourite demo 'QWERTY' lands right between the U2 indebted 'What I've Done' and the original breakout single that started it all 'One Step Closer'.

Review: There's almost no point writing about this one - an album that already has legions of disciples waiting to embrace it, with pretty much everyone who knows the names Liam Gallagher and John Squire guaranteed to be interested in what their self-titled LP is about. More so, without even hitting play we all kind of know what it's about, with two of the biggest names to come out of Manchester's 1990s indie rock breeding ground coming together for a record that sounds every bit the sum of its parts. Squire's incredible guitar playing - a centrepiece of The Stone Roses' sound - is incredible as ever, sending riffs soaring over the dilapidated rooftops of North West England and out into the stratosphere. Meanwhile, Gallagher's elongated but gruff vocal style remains steadfast across ten anthems-in-the-making. Powerhouse stuff, but like we said, nobody expected less.

Review: In one of those unique cases where a compilation eclipses the studio albums, New Order's Substance is often considered the definitive representation of the band in their prime. It's understandable given it pulled together all their singles up to 1987, but equally they re-recorded classics like 'Confusion' and 'Temptation' so everything fitted together more naturally. As a result, Substance is a more cohesive listen than many similar offerings might be and these singles remain some of the finest to ever emerge from the UK's alternative music scene. Repressed and remastered, it's sounding better than ever.

Review: Blur were always the posh, private school answer to the more streetwise cool of Oasis during the heyday of Brit pop during the mid to late 90s. Their second album Modern Life Is Rubbish got them back into the affections of the public after their debut album somewhat turned people off (with many thinking it was a cash in on the popular but fading Manchester sound) and saw the band fall behind the likes of Suede. Part of the raisin for the return to success was the sonic makeover which brought more tradition guitar-pop sounds back with lush melodies and poignant humour in the lyrics from lead singer Damon Albarn. On its 30th anniversary the album now gets a full reissue as part of National Album Day 2023

Review: It's been seven years since the tragic passing of Chester Bennington and the abrupt end of nu-metal legends Linkin Park, while their legacy remains praised and intact by avid fans. Review: For those not in the know, Puscifer is the brainchild of Tool/A Perfect Circle vocalist Maynard James Keenan; an outlier side-project designed as "simply a playground for the various voices in my head, a space with no clear or discernible goals, where my Id, Ego, and Anima all come together to exchange cookie recipes." With each of their four full-lengths to date taking completely different sonic shapes, the release of the project's 2007 debut "V" Is for Vagina perplexed, bemused, enthralled and infuriated fans in equal measure upon its initial release. Bending ambient trip-hop machinations and industrial atmospherics around Keenan's lush croons, and enlisting a frankly obnoxious list of collaborators and co-conspirators such as Tool/Kyuss producer Joe Barresi, Primus drummer Tim Alexander, Alain Johannes and former Dillinger Escape Plan drummer Gil Sharone (to name only a select handful), this reissue welcomes both the devout and unfamiliar to visit Keenan's most artistically unrestrained work in its purest form. Review: We seem to be in the middle of a run of Prince reissues right now, with the focus being on those he released through Warner. The relationship eventually went sour and Prince knocked out plenty of records in quick succession to see out his deal but that didn't dint their commercial success. Albums from the entire 16-year period are being put out into the ether on vinyl and now it's the turn of 1988's Lovesexy, which came on the heels of Sign O' The Times and might be the last of his imperial phase. 'Alphabet Street' is the most noted of the singles here in an album full of seriously steamy funk sounds.

Review: When New Order released 'True Faith' in 1987, they broke the mould as the first band to present multiple different editions of their single right at the point of arrival. As well as the widely adored original version of the track, there was a club-ready version mixed by the mighty Shep Pettibone, a true king of New York's scene who knew exactly how to get the best out of the track for the dancefloor. Our rabbit protagonist traverses dramatic and confident worlds of hellfire across 20 gut-punching trap cuts, with gloomy highlights including 'Zipper Bagz' and 'Gold Rings'.

Review: It might not be as widely celebrated as their self titled full length, but Fleetwood Mac's Rumours is still a towering album from one of the greatest bands of the last 50 years. It was the British-American outfit's 11th and came back in 1977, then just months later a live version was recorded capturing the opening night of the band's tour at The Forum - that's the one in Inglewood, California rather than Kenitsh Town - on 29 August. It captures the energy and excellent of the band, the crowd, the music and nothing from it aside from ''Gold Dust Woman' (in 2020) has ever been officially released before. Review: Ghetts is undoubtedly amongst the top tier of British MCs - a grime legend famed for being a genuinely dextrous lyricist. As On Purpose, With Purpose proves, he's also an artist whose output has evolved considerably since he emerged in the late 2000s. Review: For indie heads of a certain vintage, this album - a first full-length collaboration between Oasis lead singer Liam Gallagher and former Stone Roses guitar-slinger John Squire - is one of the most hotly anticipated of the year. It was recorded in Los Angeles over a three-week period last year, with former Foo Fighters and Gorillaz studio don Greg Kurstin handling production. As you'd expect, the album is undeniably nostalgic, with Squire's variously funky, raw and bluesy guitar licks and Beatles-esque backing tracks providing a fitting vehicle for Gallagher's distinctive lead vocals. For proof, check recent singles 'From Mars To Liverpool' - where Squires' solos towards the end seemingly soar above reverb-laden backing vocals that accurately pay tribute to the Fab Four - and the more psychedelic Roses-meets-Oasis flex of 'Just Another Rainbow'. There are no surprises, but fans will love it.

Review: No matter what type of project Deftones followed up their career-defining White Pony with, it was destined to disappoint at least some of their devout fanbase. Originally released in 2003, the band's self-titled fourth effort would mark their final collaborative project with iconic producer Terry Date (until reuniting for 2020's Ohms), while notably eschewing much of the "nu-metal" residue that still clung to their sonic makeup. Embracing elements of trip-hop and post-metal, while directly linking the group to the "are they or aren't they shoegaze?" debate which has loomed overhead ever since, the album has seen a steady reassessment from lacklustre follow up to underappreciated gem. With any luck, this reissue should continue to help highlight the cause as cuts such as 'Minerva' still soar with triumphant yet sultry hypnotics while 'Hexagram' serves as one of the heftiest cuts in the band's canon. It didn't even need an additional title. This is simply Deftones, and it still slaps two decades on.

Review: ††† (Crosses) are a synthwave band, first formed in 2011 by former Deftones member Chino Moreno, Far's Shaun Lopez and bassist Chuck Doom. Swooping in on the extant enthusiasm for chilling sounds popular at the time, like dungeon synth and witch house - but also bringing in classic synthpop elements from older bands like Depeche Mode - their music took the music press by storm. What was thought to be a short-lived revival of a sound, however, led to them not releasing any music after their debut, until now. 'PERMANENT.RADIANT' stakes a claim for the timelessness of their sound, mixing in trip-hop and rock elements (choice cuts: 'Vivien', 'Sensation') to an already doomy and bleak format.

Review: Prince's Batman soundtrack has a lot to match up to in terms of what Mr Rogers Nelson had recorded previously, or indeed after. The 1989 Tim Burton film was a resounding smash, but Prince's standalone album has a mixed legacy perhaps because of its role as a bit part in a blockbuster machine. Peel back the years and hear the songs afresh though, and there's so much to savour from the Linn Drum flaring beatdown 'Batdance' to quintessential good-time jam 'Partyman' and through to the smoochy ballad 'Scandalous'. Prince was in his prime when he made Batman, and his talent quite simply is unparalleled on this or any other album.
