Review: LILA has got five or six albums of artful ambient dropping all in quick succession and this is a third from Ludvig Cimbrelius, who has dropped one under his Eternell alias, one as Abraco de Vapor, and one under this, his oldest moniker, Purl. He also works as Illuvia and with all his projects he has mastered the art of sonic daydreaming and musical journeying. Ancient Skies is a record packed with a more intense, textural, heavy style of ambient that builds tensions and in some places has subtle implied rhythms. It makes for an involving listen that is much more than simple background music.

When it was released in 1977, Pharoah Sanders' "Pharoah" album was panned by critics, yet these days is rightly considered a spiritual jazz classic. While the vocal number that opens the second side, "Love Will Find A Way", doesn't quite land, the two other lengthy compositions are Sanders at his mercurial, spiritual best. This is best exemplified by the outstanding A-side track "Harvest Time", a 20 minute exploration of spiritual jazz's outer reaches that gradually builds in waves and includes brilliant use of the droning tones of the little-used Harmonium. It feels exotic, hypnotic and deeply spiritual, just like the contemporaneous work of his friend Alice Coltrane. The album is worth picking up for this side-long track alone.

Review: London's Tyler Zypreska has been crafting shiny pop gems all by his lonesome, building up an impressive backlog of tunes that hit all the sweet spots from OMD to La Dusseldorf, to Trio and the pining ennui of the teenage angst-anthems littering your "Pretty In Pink" and "Breakfast Club" soundtracks. Although his influences may lie in the discarded neon bones of the '80s and '90s, there's an infectious spark of melodic tune-smithing permeating the album's ten tunes.

Japan's Fuller and UK-based Skelton collaborated on this album during lockdown, and as both were confined to their respective islands they used Judith Schalansky's 'Atlas of Remote Islands' as an inspirational text throughout the project. Exchanging cello, accordion and piano parts, they gradually created three slow moving, beautiful pieces of ambient that mix organic and synthetic studio textures and create a space for thought and reflection in the mind of the listener. Or, if that doesn't appeal, a chance to simply lose yourself and luxuriate in some deeply chilled tones.

You couldn't help but feel the smack of irony when Cornershop marked their long-awaited return with an album entitled England Is A Garden. Unveiled in spring 2020, as if the realisation COVID-19, and the full brunt of the pandemic, was about to hit UK shores wasn't enough, there were four years of increasing uncertainty, distrust and anxiety surrounding Brexit to throw on a bonfire, in turn casting this record's name in a decidedly pithy light given the band's inherent diversity and regular use of imported sounds.
But the music on the record is far from a joke, hence the celebratory reception it received even as things felt like the world was coming to a surreal end. Opening with 'St Marie Under Canon', a strong nod to the Northern Soul that has never really disappeared from British nightlife, the tracks that follow boast a multitude of nuances from a variety of genres, whether bhangra, boogie, or indie pop, all realised with aplomb.
