Dan Ryan (feat Jerrald James) (11:43)
Walking Thru The Sky (feat Ron Smith - Liberation mix) (10:43)
Review: Detroit's Theo Parrish continues to serve up expressive and utterly unique new music, but his vast back catalogue will always remain of almost just as much interest to house heads. As such his Sound Signature label has repressed some quality gems from his discography. 'Roots Revisited' first came back towards the tail end of 1998 and finds the sonic shaman in heavy percussive mode while off-grid rhythms and his unique take on soul shining through. 'Dan Ryan' is deeply meditative, while the 'Walking Thru The Sky' (feat Ron Smith - Liberation mix) is a dusty and scuffed-up deep house exploration with Theo's trademark keys.

Tympanic Warfare (9:39)
Review: Theo Parrish lays down a marker for a long overdue fifth album, apparently due out later this year, with the sublime Footwork 12". Named in reference to the dance as opposed to the breakneck offshoot of Ghetto House, "Footwork" is a sublime slab of Theo with many of his trademark production touches. Think lightly brushed percussion, meandering bassline that juts out with an odd funk, and subtle yet sumptuous musical touches, all topped off by a gruff "let me see your footwork baby" croon. Those Theo fans out there that like the man to get a bit rugged will be all over "Tympanic Warfare" too, where off the grid polyrhythms cannon around the channels, augmented by an ugly bassline and dexterous keys.

Review: Shout outs to Larry Heard for finally relenting to the numerous requests to reissue his highly prized Gherkin Jerks material through his own Alleviated label with some digitally enhancement help from the guys at Clone. The 1990 EP was the last of the two EPs that Heard anonymously released under the Gherkin Jerks name back in the late 80s as a creative experiment. Notably less unhinged than Stomp The Beat, the six percussively taut tracks here feel like Heard was reacting to the nascent strains of techno emanating from Detroit. Opener "Meltdown" for example is a rolling slab of pitched-down techno with sharp Motor City-esque synth stabs and nagging, incessant keys, whilst the interplanetary connotations are clear as crystal on tracks such as the beautifully chiming "Red Planet" and the pressurised funk of "Saturn V".

Review: The second Off Topic release is another various artist affair from this promising Lisbon-based label. Pir returns with two tracks on the A-side, our favourite being the quirky minimal tech funk of 'Amiddle', while over on the flip it's all about label head Antonio Nunes with the contemplative afterhours redux of 'Creme' and the emotive late night deepness of 'Tony Transmitters' in collaboration with Luhk & Pir. Review: The seventh release of Sasaki Hiroaki's Yotsume-Music sees Hisashi Ito aka Hulot (Raum...musik, BELOW, FROGMAN/U.S.B.) welcomed to the fray, quite possible, given the EP's title, taking influences from Mr Hulot, the hero of Jacques Tati classic film 1953 'Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot'. Like said hero, there's a kooky, loveable eccentricity to his two productions - he counts Herbert and Moritz von Oswald among his main influences - with Tom Ellis Remix and Sasaki Hiroaki Remix adding a remix, one on either each side.

Riding On A Cloud (4:52)
Review: Endangered Musique kicks off with a high-quality reissue of an EP that deep house heads will either already know or soon grow to love. It was written by Jose Chinga in 1994 and is an alias of an artist better known as Brothers' Vibe aka Tony Rodriguez. The opening tune 'Love Is What You Need' is also the most well-known - it's US garage with low-slung drums and grainy pad work with a simple but effective vocal. 'I Got You' picks up the pace with shuffling drums and a grinding lead before the warm 90s house sounds come to the fore again on 'Let It Go' and 'Riding On A Cloud'. Lovely stuff.

Review: Eclectic technoizer Basic Bastard locks arms with Detroiter Orlando Voorn, their dual sonic output being the new 'Drama' EP. The three-tracker is nothing short of a sonic adventure, spanning acid, to dub, to uncategorisable entrainments. Bastard's original 'Drama' nails the art of the acid loop, a tricky tactic that is much less masterable than one might think. Voorn remixes the track my miring its elements in a cruddy ambience, while also greedily occupying the entire B-side with the urban-hellish jazz-noise-house cut 'Survival'.

Review: Second-guessing Eversines (real name Remco Hazewinkel) has always been tricky, with the Dutch producer's releases frequently blurring the boundaries between club-focused techno, electro, IDM, ambient and more experimental flavours. For his Slow Life debut, the Amsterdam-based artist has decided to focus on peak-time floors, opening proceedings with the hybrid Detroit techno/acid/piano-house shimmer of 'First Rays' - a gorgeous, sunrise-read slab of emotive dancefloor brilliance. The rest of the EP is similarly positive, with highlights including the subtle LFO influences, psychedelic TB-303 motifs and bustling techno-electro beats of 'Simple Honesty', and the alien-sounding, sub-heavy, bleep-influenced techno shuffle of 'Youth'. An impressively strong EP all told.

Review: Santa Cata kicks off with a first release that takes the form of a various artists' EP and lays out their vision of minimal and tech house. Halbert's 'Mixed Feelings' is first and is a jittery and metallic tech cut with stark hits but dreamy chords. There is more kick to the kicks of Dojo Zone's 'Pasedonia' while Dani Casarano spins out some wonky drum machine energy and blotting synths on 'Time Chains.' Hamid shuts down with another modular workout that brims with various synth textures from trippy and late night to frosty and distorted on 'What Bout Music.'

Review: The second vinyl release on Midnight Social comes from Adam Collins, one half of iconic US tech house duo Omni A.M. and an all-round seasoned pro in the field of stripped-back, headsy club gear. If you can't get enough of that sound then you're going to be all over this record, which reaches from the strict rhythmic workout of 'Kyiv' to the cheeky chord stabs of 'Three White Doves', the deep blue waters of 'Cyprus Falls' and on to Grant Dell's 'Tribulation' remix of 'Kyiv' which reaches into boxy, trip-out territory for the blurry end of the dance.

Review: NND takes us deep into the heart of a warehouse party after dark with this powerful new EP for Extrude. He hails from Italy and is part of the new school with an equal mix of retro sounds and future ideals. This is a third solo EP from the artist and it kicks off with the acid lashings of 'Prototype', a slick tech cut with neon chords and bumpy bass. 'Nightmare Voyage' is a more cosmic trip with darker energy and heads-down dancing vibes and then 'Plutone' cuts loose with wild synth lens spraying about over raw drum work. 'Terrorist' shuts down with a haunting late-night vibe.

Review: Highway Stories is an all-new label that quickly finds top gear as it heads out on a smooth house cruise courtesy of pilot Tommaso Pizzelli. He is someone with a fine grasp of groove and a real penchant for spaced out sounds on this evidence. 'Diver' is a cool and classy opener for the early evening hours - the seductive drums drawing you into a world of warped synth-funk. 'Change The World' is similar but faster, with more urgency to the drum work as you hit top speed. 'Rub Dub' has a more fleshy low end and nice elastic bass and 'Stripped' then gets nice and trippy to close out a timeless EP.

It is powered by a serious hard-assed kick drum and a lush bassline featuring three melodies at once. It's funky, groovy, and sure to fire up any dance floor whether indoors at night or outdoors in the open air, and now gets a welcome reissue that is "dedicated to Juan Atkins and the spirit of Metroplex Records". A real piece of classic Motor City magic.

Across the tunes you'll find a fusion of dub, d&B, house and even r&b to make for an alluring sonic trip. Opener 'Deliver Me' brings the warmth and soul with balmy chords over raw, woody drums with a big diva vocal up top. Things are paired back for 'Azizam Dub' which has a subsonic bass line bump and synth stabs bringing the energy. 'Internal Vybrations' is d&b powered by monstrous bass with hi-hats, shakers and maracas detailing the rhythm, and last of all 'Celebration Dub' brings a funky and summery house vibe perfect for outdoor dancing. This is as varied an EP as you'll hear this season.

Review: Ten years since his first drops on Body Parts et al, Kirik can easily be considered a mainstay of the Eastern European minimal scene, and his Uzvar label has kicked back into action in defiance of the pressure foisted upon his Ukrainian homeland. The latest drop on the label finds him teaming up with Zone+, offering up some charmingly beautiful cuts that place musicality in front of functionality. Don't be mistaken, these tracks all groove and shuffle with the floor in mind, but the shimmering synths on 'Well Well Well' and the hushed pads and keys on 'New Way' all speak on an emotional level, which can only bring magic results when deployed the right way in the dance.

Review: Over the last few years, Nuthin' But A Soul Thing (NBAST) founder HSDN has released more of his music on vinyl, after years spent throwing out digital download releases left, right and centre. No Place Like Home marks his second wax outing of 2023 and begins with the bouncy, swirling and piano-heavy disco-house joy of 'Stronger'. He doffs a cap to classic New Jersey garage on the organ-rich classiness of 'Jaunty', before blurring the boundaries between classic UK garage, soulful house and piano-sporting deep house on the joyous 'Sister'. The producer's love of sparkling piano riffs, loved-up chords and echoing vocal snippets once again comes to the fore on 'No Place Like Home', which is as deep and bass-heavy as it is colourful and energetic.

It sees the return of label regulars Skeewiff for a new series of outings that take the form of reworked covers of some of their favourite library tracks, inspired by greats of the genre such as Keith Mansfield, Brian Bennett, and Alan Hawkshaw. First up is 'Exclusive Blend,' a rather classic instrumental composition by Mansfield. 'Spanish Flea' is on the flip and is a version of a very famous work by Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass Band. It's a funky take with lots of percussive energy and big strings.

Review: Moderation is important when it comes to psychedelics use, and so it's just as well that The Trip's latest acid trance EP 'Perfect Moderation' preaches this. The sound is measured to match, with just the right balance of midrange acid and drummy punch to sate all the senses without overstimulating the heightened mind. Things grow piano-ravey on the B, too, for those who prefer their music less entheogenic and more euphoric.

Review: David 'Move D' Moufang may have released music on many different labels over the years, but remarkably this contribution to the label's RX series marks his belated debut on Rawax. As you'd expect given the Heidelberg-based veteran's stellar career and exceptional track record, there's much to set the pulse racing throughout. He starts in sparkling, life-affirming mode via the deliciously dreamy synths, bustling drum machine percussion, acid bass and spacey synth sounds of 'Circle To The Square', before exploring darker, moodier, wilder and more twisted, techno-influenced tackle on 'Sweet Heini'. Boulliabass lends a hand on the ultra-deep, ambient techno-tinged house hypnotism of 'Drone', while 'Ripples (2023 Version)' wraps undulating melodies and hazy chords around a head-nodding, locked-in deep house groove.

Review: Running digital and physical formats in tandem to explore many shades of techno and electro, Miden have worked hard to establish the scope of their sound and so the mission continues with this release from Nechkin. 'Overmoon' is a many-sided track with the reduced roll of minimal breaks but a lot of shape-shifting sound design and industrial atmospheric touches adding layers of intrigue to the overall construction. Herck Overearth gets busy with their remix, boiling the complexities down and fragmenting the beat to create a teasing, hypnotic ride more focused on the minimal tradition. 'Ettro' meanwhile finds Nechkin taking another unexpected turn towards folk elements and delicate, organic percussion, highlighting him as a producer to keep tabs on.

Backing up the mood comes the oppressive, in-your-face transitory metallics of 'Cluster' and the brain-frying zappage of 'Networks'.

They have always brought together live, ethnic, and electronic sounds with folk and modern pop, later getting ever more experimental. Early albums Forgotten Colors in 1986 and Wonderful Vision in 1988 are groundbreaking affairs, the latter of which gave rise to 'Motion Of Waves', which is something of a cult favourite for deep diggers. It is a rich instrumental groove that layers up synthesiser, flute, guitar and haunting vocals sitting over a brilliantly electric beat. The whole thing was a live one-take recording and is perfectly suited to both sunset and sunup moments of dancing pleasure.

Review: Amsterdam's Locked-In label snaps up Noiro and Riku Sugimoto for a pair of tunes each on this second vinyl outing. It's as fresh and forward shrinking as tech house gets, too. Noiro kicks off with 'Viens Dormir', a fleshy sound with bulbous bass and skittish synth patterns. Sugimoto's 'City Sleep' is then a mysterious late night bucker with dry drums and hi hats marching at a quick pace through a future urban metropolis. He steps up again with 'Semicircular', a bumping cut with spraying synths and rubbing bass before Noiro offers more light and melodic tech in the form of the cheery 'Hey Man'.

Review: On their latest must-check reissue, Groovin' Recordings take us back to 1998 and a killer chunk of what would then have been called 'US garage' produced by Deep Swing duo Eric Wikman and James Donaldson under their alternative Sunkids alias. The fact that it was 'executive produced' by Tony Humphries should tell you what to expect: gospel-influenced soulful full to bursting with bumpin' beats, rubbery bass guitar, righteous beats and powerful, life-affirming lead vocals courtesy of Chance. The flip side 'Reworked' version is a more stomping, high-energy affair informed by the popularity of filter-heavy funky house and disco-house. It's good, but it's the hands-in-the-air A-side that's the real killer.

Few producers manage to cook up the sort of rawness that he did so often throughout his career, which indulged legendary EPs for top labels like Dance Mania. Here his In The Kitchen '95 EP gets served up by Chiwax's Classic Edition series. 'Come On Children' is a perfect embodiment of Paul's sound - raw drum funk, slapping hits and sweat-inducing vibes. 'Buzz Buzz' is a head-wrecking acid jam and 'It's House' is pure ghetto funk. There is high-speed sensuousness 'Movin Baby' and hypnotic depths to 'I'm A Freak (& Your Girl Is Too).'

Review: Bare Bones Wax's first release of 2023 mirrors the agenda-setting approach of its 2022 multu-artist debut, with a quartet of artists offering up cuts that define the brand of forthright deep house that the vinyl-only imprint wants to release in future. It's a rock-solid collection all told. Underground hero Lil' Mark blurs the boundaries between noughties Chicago boompty and Maurice Fulton's Syclops project on the bouncy brilliance of 'Bare 2 The Bone', before label regular Carlo Gambinho opts for a far deeper, early morning-friendly sound on the warm and woozy 'Satchmo'. Romanian producer Dragosh's 'Fresh Fruit' is deep and minimal with added soul thanks to the use of some cut-up male and female vocal snippets, while Heat Alliance's 'Morning Light' is a TB-303 sporting, sub-heavy jack-track.

Instrumorgan #1 (Doc J club mix)
Instrumorgan #2 (Freddy's mix)
Instrumorgan #3 (Chicago mix)
Review: DJ Fede's second EP as Luv, Instrumorgan, has become something of a cult classic in recent times, with a new generation of DJs embracing the 1995 release's blend of New Jersey garage, NYC deep house and organ-rich Italo-house flavours. This reissue, then, is long overdue. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the deep and chunky groves, tight organ stabs and eyes-closed spoken word snippets of 'Instrumorgan 1 (Doc J Club Mix)', and the deeper, crunchier and more bass-heavy throb of 'Instrumorgan 2 (Fede's Mix)', to the jacking, drum machine-driven looseness of 'Instrumorgan 3 (Chicaho Mix)', where a lo-fi synth-sax motif adds an extra dose of late-night energy.

What You Need (5:15)
A Little Piano (6:01)
Review: For the label's latest on-point reissue, Groovin' Records has delved into the slim catalogue of short-lived Italian production duo Soft House Company. Originally released in 1990 and a dancefloor smash all over Europe, 'What U Need' is typical of loved-up Italian house of the period - all life-affirming piano stabs, tactile synth-bass, occasional synth-strings, rolling drum machine beats and cut-up vocal snippets from First Choice's much-sampled disco classic 'Let No Man Put Asunder'. Over on the reverse you'll find original B-side 'A Little Piano', a deeper and even more loved-up workout that's effectively a deep house style dub of the A-side, shorn of the vocals, featuring chunkier beats, more prominent bass, and delay-laden piano motifs aplenty.

Cybereign - "My Feel" (5:17)
Review: Connecticut label, Kraftjerks, has made a name for itself as the east coast's prime electro label. Bringing us the sixth volume of their popular Machine Funk Is Our Game series they've pulled together an impressive array of artists including Alonzo, Daniel Savio, Deroboter, Kid Ginseng, and Cybereign. 'Nikki Don't Save Me' is the powerful, bass heavy track that opens the compilation. Veering through meteor fields and firing through wormholes, this is tonally dark electro at its best. 'Chrome Belt Buckle (feat. Questosahn)', a scratch-inflected journey through warped vocals and frenetic percussion, is another highlight. Perfect for the club or cruising down the highway, this is a cornerstone record for electro fans.

Just Breathe On Me (Underground mix) (8:56)
See My Love (with Luciano Gioia - Neapolitan Soul & Ace Shyllon Underground mix) (7:56)
Review: Neapolitan Soul Records unveils a new EP, featuring two stunning tracks. The first, 'Just Breathe on Me', is an elegantly deep and energetic Afro-disco groove that features rich percussion and an 'underground' atmosphere. The second track is a collaboration between the Neapolitan producer and London DJ/producer Ace Shyllon, remixing the track 'See My Love', originally produced with Luciano Gioia. The remix merges voice, groove, synth and pads into a sensual and incisive groove suitable for the demanding underground dancefloor. A must-have EP for all deep house enthusiasts.

Review: The follow up to 'Sun Circles' is here: 'Jour De Fete' (French for "day of celebration") is a sweltering slab of festive inner city disco of the highest order. Flip the record for a mighty, extended dub by cult hero Conrad McDonnell of Idjut Boys fame. 'Nuff said.

Review: On-point Japanese producer Takuya Matsumoto returns to Clone's Jack For Daze label with a follow-up to his brilliantly executed 85-88 EP. He's not discovered a shoe-box of DATs under the bed, but rather is purposefully paying tribute to the early days of house and techno with specific explorations of particular eras and their attendant sounds. This time around we're taken to the early 90s, with some wonderful, varied results. There's lush, FM-embellished deep house on '01 90' and edgy, jackin' techno wormholes opening up on '02 91'. Meanwhile '03 92' retains a healthy bounce and some lush washes of synth, and '04 93' tips towards the kind of garage house you'd find on a Strictly Rhythm record 30 years ago. Crucially, it's all shot through with tonnes more personality than most 90s soundalike records, so full credit to Matsumoto for spelling his intentions out and delivering the goods.
