Review: Cranes were a British alternative band formed in 1985. Long before the Dream Pop subgenre name came out, the band earned a cult following culminating in 1992 opening for The Cure on their Wish tour of America. Strangely, there catalogue has been mostly untouched as far as reissues are concerned. But, the news of a remaster and reissue is even better! Originally released in 1986, their debut album Fuse was a cassette only purchase and for 38 years it has stayed that way. Until now! Review: Amongst Larry Heard's many, many celebrated achievements in the field of pioneering house music, the Gherkin Jerks tracks have a certain magnetism thanks to their downright nasty rawness. The original late 80s 12"s have been revisited in the past, but now the bonus tracks originally released on a comprehensive 2013 compilation get their own outing, cut to wax for the first time to serve all those who love their foundational house as rough as it comes. 'Psychotic Fantasy' is a dissonant masterpiece of gnarly acid, while 'Rezynator' has a slightly more melodic demeanour alongside its own grubby brilliance. The 'Original Full Take' of 'Ecstasy' is a slow-burning monster of needlepoint 303 tweaking and bludgeoned beats which jacks out for a full eight minutes.

Review: One of Detroit's finest, Lauren Flax aligns with the Chiwax label for a debut offering of ultra-rough, juking, retrofuturistic daydreams in four tracks. Like a rose blossoming from a thorny stem, this EP starts out raw and slowly fans out into the subtler tricks of multilayering and accoutrement. 'Jack The Haus' is the tweezy, 16-bit hardware jam; then there's 'The Cheeky Whistle Song', which, compared to the first track, betrays a contrasting taste for cascading arps and subtle melodies in the surround mix. 'D-Troit' returns somewhat to the initial Detroit bounce mood, while Lis Sarroca's remix rounds things off with a softer, out-your-face breaks-house beeper.

Review: The highly respected and busy ARTS label has released their latest What Will Remain When We're Gone by Paul Roux. The title track is a melodic burner that succeeds triumphantly with heavy percussion, anthemic crescendos and at a blistering pace. Amazing! 'Burning' is a fantastic as well. Dramatic and engaging, we love the way it favors melody over the supporting rhythm giving it a more atmospheric sound. On the B-side, 'Maybe It's Love' adds some soft-spoken female singing to it giving us strong 2000s era flashbacks. This is a really strong and perhaps underrated 12". Give this the opportunity to play through and you will want to revisit these often. ARTS continues to come through with excellent techno.

Review: 'Blue Train' is created by Piero and is the second release from the newly formed label, My Cup Of Tea. Piero, who is also the label owner, gives us four tracks of deep house that blend jazzier notes along with seductive grooves. The title track is an upbeat, pumping late-night gem that blends some vocals along with a smooth saxophone sample, 'Nikes On My Feet' adds a cool broken-beat rhythm to the mixture while still being pretty darn techy and funky and we love the use of the acid line that balances out the jazz sounds. For the B-side you have original version of 'International Language' along with a remix of it by Carlo (Carlos Alvarez). You can't go wrong with either version as a DJ. My Cup Of Tea is off to a strong start for sure.

Review: During The Black Keys surprise revival of recent years, much of their music has been produced by Dangermouse. While he played no role on the duo's new album, Ohio Players - their 12th in total - his influence remains in the inventiveness of the production. The pair's new-found love of collaboration remains too, with Beck credited as co-writer on roughly half of the album's tracks. His influence is obvious in the funkiness and fuzz-fuelled psychedelia of 'This Is Nowhere' and 'Don't Let Me Go', as well as the quirky, horn-sporting cheeriness of 'Beautiful People (Stay High)' and the low-slung, effortlessly funky indie-rap hedonism of 'Paper Crown' (where he appears on vocals alongside Juicy J. The band's wholehearted love of hip-hop is also explored on the excellent Lil Noid collaboration 'Candy & Her Friends'.

Review: Sascha Funke is a long time master of the deep who arrives on the always tastefully diverse Running Back label headed up so expertly by Gerd Janson. He brings a slightly different look here with the wonky, twitchy and tech infused rhythmic stomp of 'Reality'. There is more melody on display on 'Fantasy' with its ever rising synth loops glowing bright with a celestial hue and on the flip-side 'Puzzle' pairs some subtly joyous piano chord stabs over prickly disco-tech beats with molten arps underneath. 'Halle Weissensee' then closes down with a nice stiff and rave ready house sound, snappy beats and tight bass.

Review: The creative partnership between Tiga & Hudson Mohawke expresses a mutual love of "hardcore romance," a liminal state where the bounds between euphoria, melancholy and the raw power of friendship disintegrate completely. Review: The fourth of a series of reissues from Network 23 - which focuses on classic tracks by and adjacent to R-ZAC (Crystal Distortion and 69db) of Spiral Tribe, and which made up the bulk of the OG rave collective's live sets - the 'NET23 04' EP is a mesmerising sauna of tekno entrainments and mental sonic mares. Starting with a subtle mind-melter from Crystal Distortion, 'ESV', we move into increasingly propagandistic vibes from R-Zac - whose 'LSP23' sounds like a numbers station stuck on loop and set to a technoization - and then followed by 69db and Meltdown Mickey's 'Drivin', which returns things to their initial minimal but maddening state.

Review: Dimi Angelis makes a fine statement with his 13th release via the ANGLS label and it is packed with raw, authentic beats across four robust tracks that are destined to captivate dancefloors. The A-side features 'Shadowland' which immediately ensnares listeners with its lasso-like loops and spatial nuances. Meanwhile, 'Intergalactic' ignites the dancefloor with its mechanical noise assault and superbly uses the 909 to build suspense with punchy rhythms. Flipping to the B-side, 'Crionics' plunges you into a deep sonic abyss where tension abounds and finally 'Ice Warrior' concludes the journey with abstract yet fulfilling frequencies. Dimi Angelis returns with his distinctive sound, primed to electrify floors from basements to warehouses once more.

Review: Few bands have sidestepped expectations as cannily as Mount Kimbie. Initially a duo but now expanded into a quartet, the British band has previously excelled in mixing, matching and fusing a wide range of experimental and left of centre electronic music influences. On The Sunset Violet, their first full-length as a quartet, they've shifted sonically once more, leaning into their indie-rock influences on a set recorded in California. The latter aspect - and the impact of being surrounded by sunshine and desert - is reflected in the warmth and haziness of the sound, which draws on the layered vocals and guitars of vintage shoegaze while also reaching for more familiar aspects of the band's previous experimental electronic sounds (for proof, check the ghostly musical vision that is King Krule collaboration 'Boxing').

Review: The recently started Xistence Records, is dedicated to being a beacon of quality Detroit inspired techno. The label is the home base for Phil Robertson and his own music (so far). Under the name Arbilla, this is the third release on the label. The Movement is a massive classic sounding Detroit techno that would could easily be found in the UR camp. This is that large futuristic, dystopian hi-tech jazz type sound. The B-side features remixes by Biz and then Microworld. The Biz remix is more pronounced on the rhythm and works out a few additions to the original melody successfully. Australian veteran Microworld puts a bit more muscle into the groove while still keeping things melodic and up-tempo. For fans of Detroit techno, you are going to love this.

Review: After an extended hiatus of nigh-on five years, Vampire Weekend has finally got around to recording a new album. Only their third studio set in total, Only God Was Above Us sees the trio muse on the weight of history - their own as much as anything else - while fretting about what lies ahead for the human race. Musically, much of what's on offer is densely layered and impressively loud, with loads of intricate musical detail (check the jazz horns and mad stereo panning of 'Classical' and the string-laden, White Album-era Beatles nostalgia of 'Capricorn') working in unison with their attractive, harmonic, saucer-eyed vocals. It's a bit of a triumph all told and one that proves that there's plenty of life yet in Vampire Weekend.
