Minimal/Tech House
  1. Builded Mind (9:27)
  2. Nearly Forever (6:02)
  3. Foreground (6:36)
Review: After an extended, pandemic-related break, Brawther has decided to re-activate his highly regarded Negentropy label via a second EP on the imprint from former L.B Produce artist Ron Obvious. He begins in trademark style via EP highlight 'Builded Mind', a tech-tinged blend of skipping, UK garage style drums, jaunty sub bass, spacey electronics and deliciously tactile deep house motifs. He continues to fix loose-limbed and weighty garage grooves to deep and intergalactic house sounds on side two opener 'Nearly Forever', before pushing dub style bass to the fore on hypnotic late-night deep house number 'Foreground'.

  1. They Speak Colour (5:41)
  2. The City (6:03)
  3. The Cull (3:24)
Review: Ron's Reworks, a series of scalpel jobs and lightly beefed-up reworks from Crazy P co-founder Jim Baron AKA Ron Basejam, has now reached its fourth volume. Predictably, the included material is every bit as well-crafted as its' similarly inclined predecessors. The standout is undoubtedly A-side 'They Speak Colour', a loopy, soft-focus disco-house jam whose relentless grooves, synthesizer splashes and simmering orchestration make it sound like Soundstream after a bong full of Marijuana smoke and several disco biscuits. Elsewhere, 'The City' is a canny revision of an unusual disco-boogie number that builds through sections of drums and cut-up, scat style vocals before finally flourishing late on, while 'The Cull' is a deep and meandering head-nodder tailor-made for warm-up sets and sit-down bar gigs.

  3. Ain't No Stopping Us Now (3:03)
Review: Second time around for Banda Achilifunk and Original Jazz Orquestra's sought-after 2011 cover of disco classic "I Believe in Miracles", original copies of which now change hands for serious sums online. The expansive Spanish crew's baggy, sun-kissed and rumba-soaked Latin disco cover of the Jackson Sisters' classic is perfectly pitched, adding layers of crunchy Clavinets and punchy horns to a sumptuously summery groove. Over on the flip we get two different takes on McFadden & Whitehead classic "Ain't No Stopping Us Now": a decidedly Balearic Spanish language cover ("No Nos Pararas"), and an instrumental cover full to bursting with superb grooves and even more scintillating horn solos.

Review: Boston's A-grade record digger, funk and soul boffin and master edit maker Kon is back with his Gang for this tidy 7" that also features Rick James. It is once again an edit aided by Kon's long time engineer Caserta, with slick, life affirming jazz tinged and super funky production. Soul Supreme is on keys, the knotted bass comes from Xander Vrienten and together they all serve up a real late summer jam that could be 50 years old. The dub is just as delicious on the flip, with more room for the lux and authentic production and very real musicianship to shine through

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. What's Your Secret? (Bastedos edit) (9:23)
  2. Do You Blow? (5:25)
Review: Felix Dickinson has been donning the Bastedos re-edit alias on and off for 18 years, occasionally popping up with a fresh selection of superb scalpel jobs. Here the Bristol-based veteran delivers two more incendiary rearrangements. The undoubted highlight is A-side 'What's Your Secret (Bastedos Edit)', a near ten-minute rework of a Clavinet-sporting AOR disco epic that moves through waves of spacey grooves, soaring female backing vocals, impassioned blue-eyed lead vocals and more low-slung sections designed to raise temperatures out on the dancefloor. Dickinson changes tack on flipside 'Do You Blow?', successfully dubbing out an oddball chunk of electro-era quirkiness built around a killer bassline, scat vocals, breathy flute solos and body-popping drum machine beats.

  2. Get On The Funk Train (Michael Gray & Mark Knight remix) (5:51)
  3. Get On The Funk Train (Todd Terry Freeze mix) (6:04)
Review: Hot on the heels of her excellent Chapters of Beginning retrospective, Anane offers up something even more righteous: a storming cover of Munich Machine's 1977 disco epic 'Get On The Funk Train'. On the A-side you'll find the original mix by Anane's other half, Louie Vega, which brilliant layers mazy synth solos, undulating orchestration and her powerful vocals on top of a driving, house-style disco groove. It's a killer cover all told, offering a faithful update that should delight all disco heads. Over on the flip, Michael Gray and Mark Knight reach for the synth-bass on a smoother disco-house version, before Todd Terry drops some instant excitement via a sweaty, beefed up loop-house revision.

Soul Is My Salvation Chapter 7

Review: Tone B Nimble's eight part 7" series is shining a light on some essential gospel, disco, boogie and soul sounds which, when all put together, reveal a beautiful design courtesy of designer Charlotte McCrae. That makes this an extra special collector's piece even before you add the music into the bargain. Chapter 7 is a busting one with Spiritual Souls 1982 jam 'We Came To Show You The Way' layering up hardcore funk rhythms with some early rap vocals that bring the attitude. Reverse it for Heaven's Sound's 1984 gold, 'Fire,' which is an expansive and expressive vocal masterpiece.

It was a remix of their 'Talking All That Jazz' by Dimitri From Paris that resurrected interest in the group in 1998 and now this 7" continues to shine a light on the often forgotten group. Review: The second release on Opia sub-label Euphoric State offers up highlights from the extensive catalogue of Swiss veteran Dan Piu, a producer who has been serving-up quality house and techno since the late 1990s. There's much to admire across the five tracks, from the sleazy, Yorkshire bleep-goes-to-New York heaviness of opener 'Bleepy at 5Am' and the sumptuous, sunrise-ready, early '90s deep house positivity of 'El Viento De La Noche', to the similarly warming and melodic 'Mimic Human Form' and the impeccable, hip-hop influenced downtempo beats of 'QH 1999'. Best of all though is sleazy, sub-heavy deep tech-house number 'Angry Giant Machine', a cut that's near faultless in every way.

Review: The irrepressible Gamm label knows a thing or two about disco, funk and soul. Yet more irrefutable evidence for that claim comes from this tidy 12" two tracker featuring some lost remixes. 'I'm In Love Dancin' takes source sounds from Arthur Russell's classic 'Is It All Over My Face' and repurposes them with gangling percussive lives, sunny flutes and mad horns to make for something that will shake your body loose. Flip it over for the steamy, sensuous, intense disco stomps of 'Imma Phreak' complete with fame coos and cries and plenty of dance floor clout. The legendary Rahaan and DJ Emanuel are in fine form here.

Review: Last December, Los Angeles combo Night Owls debuted on F Spot Records with a genuine 21st century rarity: a reggae-soul cover of Donny Hathaway's 'This Christmas', featuring lead vocals from the mighty Durand Jones. For their fourth single, they've decided to deliver another cover, this time of Young Rascals' cut 'Groovin'. Their sun-soaked, rocksteady style reggae take is apparently a homage to Willie Mitchell's cover (as sampled by Wu-Tang Clan), and features Jungle Fire man Jamie Allensworth singing majestically over a jaunty rhythm track rich in heady Hammond organ sounds and toasty bass. The band's brilliant arrangement and tight-but-languid performance naturally comes to the fore on the B-side Instrumental Mix.

Review: When announcing the launch of his new label No Time County, Robin Ordell said it would focus on tracks that, "bring a feeling of elegance to the dancefloor". There's certainly plenty of polished, slick and ear-pleasing to be found on the label's inaugural release, a multi-artist affair featuring a trio of minimalistic tech-house tracks. Ordell joins forces with Bruno Schmidt as Asper Bothrops on opener 'Track 21', a gently acid-flecked affair built around deep sub-bass, crunchy drums and addictively fuzzy organ stabs. He showcases his own brand of solo elegance on the similarly deep, TB-303-powered hypnotism of 'Backwash (Intro)', before Rudoh steals the show via the rolling, densely layered percussion, locked-in sub-bass and dreamy pads of closing cut 'Energi'.

Review: Of those labels who exist at the intersection of deep house, tech-house and what would have once been called progressive house, few are quite as consistent as Lee Burridge and Matthew Dekay's All Day I Dream. The label's latest release is another doozy. It comes from returning twosome Double Touch, who've joined forces with vocalist Reignan to deliver a pair of sumptuous tracks that combine tech-tinged dancefloor grooves with simmering strings, warming chords and twinkling piano motifs. The star attraction is undoubtedly gorgeous title track 'Greatest Day', which is also given a slightly darker, deeper and even more atmospheric treatment by label regulars Lost Desert. The EP's other cut, 'All I Want', is a melancholic affair notable for its use of what sounds like a string quartet.

Review: During their continuing trawls through Patrick Cowley's archives, Dark Entries has uncovered a string of cover versions that the late, great San Francisco-based producer recorded between 1974 and '77. They've now decided to gather them together on Some Funkettes, a synthesizer-fired set that more than lives up to its title. Perhaps the most headline-grabbing number is a 10-minute re-creation of Donna Summer's Giorgio Moroder-produced electro-disco masterpiece, 'I Feel Love' - a record that Cowley famously remixed, but here re-imagines as a more spacey instrumental workout - but there's plenty elsewhere across the CD that's arguably even better. For proof, check Cowley's colourful synth-funk versions of 'Papa Was a Rolling Stone' and 'Do It Any Way You Wanna', and his brilliant interpretations of Herbie Hancock's 'Chameleon' (here re-named 'Spiked Punch').

Review: While it was initially set up as a vehicle for his numerous solo and collaborative projects (think Transparent Sound and Artificial Arm), Orson Bramley's Orson Records imprint has recently started showcasing releases from other like-minded artists. This EP comes from one such producer, some time I Love Acid, Balkan and Varvet contributor Ben Pest. He begins via the fuzz-fuelled, medium electro aggression of "Mouth Lawson", a genuinely twisted and low-slung treat, before exploring alien-sounding, minor key-heavy pastures on rave-ready follow-up "Now Animate". Pest's love of twisted TB-303 acid lines is explored further on EP highlight "Vim & Vigour", a track that's then taken to even greater peak-time electro heights on the accompanying Transparent Sound remix.

Enchanting polyrhythms are undoubtedly the order of the day across The First Thing EP, with the Bucharest-based producer's usual knack for eloquent track titles as well. On the A-side, we have 'Different Point Of Structure' which is a driving and energetic main room workout with subtle dub techno influences and utilising the hypnotic qualities of previous work, while the B-side cut 'The First Thing You Hear' is a more stripped back and minimalistic affair reaching near tribal moments, but this one is definitely more suited to heady afterhours moments.

Review: Naming records after colours is nothing new; in fact, British tech-house pioneers Circulation spent much of their career delivering tracks named in honour of Pantone colours. Perhaps it was this that inspired Alex Falconer and Jean-Pierre Ahtuam to follow a similar pattern with releases on their 2X label. Circulation certainly would have been proud of 'Stray', the flipside cut on Tim Schlockermann's 2X Orange 12" (his first for the imprint). Featuring meditative ambient chords, pulsing and pleasing synthesizer melodies, chunky synth-bass and snappy, hypnotic machine drums, it sits somewhere between early 2000s tech-house and machine-made deep house. Over on side A, Schlockermann opts for a fuzzier, quirkier and more lo-fi sound on the analogue house sweetness that is 'Measuring Trips'.

As many heads will tell you, the Eclipse EP is a genuine slept-on classic and a near faultless collection of cuts. For proof, first check the organ-sporting New Jersey garage meets UK deep house vibe of the slick and sub-heavy 'My Life', before admiring the warehouse ready, stab-sporting peak-time happiness of 'Nine Hours'. The outfit's interest in more horizontal flavours is expertly explored on the ambient-influenced deep techno number 'Global Warning', while closing cut '926 N Mills Avenue' brilliantly joins the dots between Nu Groove maestros the Burrell Brothers and the colourful, ambient-influenced musicality of Italian dream house.

He's at it again on the Language of Love EP, his first outing on Lobster Theremin. You'll find the original version - a fine fusion of Clavinet and Hammond-splashed cosmic soul blessed with funky bottom-end and a superb lead vocal from Mr Jolly - on the flip, with Altroy & Jr's "Rhythmic Treatment" on the A. It's a slightly weightier and heavier treatment, with the duo adding subtle new percussion while re-editing key sections. Review: Fresh from his junglised Hoover1 investigations, Rene Pawlowitz returns to his Shed alias and makes his debut on Pinch's Tectonic with three ace flashbacks to an exciting time of fusion between dubstep and techno around the late 2000s. 'Try' sets the scene with those tumbling, smoky drums synonymous with the time. Set to the backdrop of a rising, psychedelic build and faraway vocal tones, it's a dubby side to Shed we're often teased with but never get to fully taste. It's backed by two more exemplary explorations; 'Box' is dub techno to the very core, all grumbling subs and industrial elements while 'Sweep' brings the four/fours into the mix for a big fat juggernaut finale. What an EP.

There's plenty to get the juices flowing on Henderson's latest six-track outing, from the the muscular but spacey deep house/techno fusion of 'Ego' - all energetic synth-bass, dreamy chords, bleary-eyed female vocal samples and bleeping melodies - to the psychedelic stomp of 'Parametric' and the loved-up breakbeat loveliness of 'Highball'. The single was always a curio and remained in the shadows of the more catchy and commercially successful 'The Choice is Yours' but it does have a great hook and tumble-down charm to the production. Dres is the MC bringing the character and plenty of carefully dug out samples make this one standout above many of its peers. It's built on huge old school referencing breakbeats, with just as retro piano chords layered over the top. Add in some twitchy acid sounds, slamming drums and a lung-busting diva vocal and you have an irresistible, festival sized house anthem that will unite all dancers in raptures. Review: The seventh album from South London-based producer and experimental maverick Darren Cunningham and it's a beauty. The last time we heard from him, in 2018, he was collaborating with the London Contemporary Orchestra and improvising a score for a Stockhausen opera and he's taken an element of that work with him and married it to disorientating, otherworldly electronics. 'Karma & Desire' has a real feel of escapism, almost to the extent of feeling like an out of body experience, as dislocated and disembodied melodies float around in the ether. There are the first proper vocal collaborations he's undertaken here, but the two tracks are no pop bangers, songstress Zsela's efforts sounding more like some beguiling abstract poetry. Travelling further and further, creatively, from the normal environs of dancefloor culture, he's not lost any of his spellbinding musicality or sonic storytelling skills.

Review: The 30th EP on Omena is suitably special for such an occasion. The label bring in Twovi aka Vito Loperfido to the family, and he is someone who has been putting out interesting house since debuting on Bosconi in 2017, with follow ups on the legendary Inner Balance label overseen by Chicago great Chez Damier. The Italian native continues to innovate here with a house sound that is deep yet dynamic, melodic and dreamy. His drums are loose and funky, the sax lines bring some jazz tinges and a remix from Contours adds another dimension to what is a classy house EP.

Review: While 1990s Italian techno duo Lino Monaco and Nicola Buono may have called themselves Quiet Men, the music showcased on this first EP in 21 years is anything but. It's made up of tracks recorded - but largely not released - between 1994 and '97, which the pair recently rediscovered on dusty DATs. There's much to enjoy across the five tracks, from the angular acid bass, heavy beats and angular, post-bleep melodies of 'Doubled', and the aptly-named, early Moby style techno immersion of 'Deep', to the stomping, buzzing intensity of 'HE', and the introspective dreaminess of stripped-back ambient techno number 'Brain'. The latter comes accompanied by a stunning, previously unheard, beat-free revision.
