Lowpass gate module for AE modular
Notes: The LOPAG is the lowpass gate module for AE. It is based on a Vactrol (like all good lowpass gates) and has two inputs: IN (audio signal) and TRIG. A pulse on the TRIG input opens the signal path shortly and via the characteristics of the Vactrol the audio signal is filtered and attenuated in a plucked, percussive way. Additional GATE and CV inputs allow more control over the way the module works.

4-track, 16-step trigger sequencer
Notes: TRIQ164 is a 4-track, 16-step trigger sequencer.

Four track buttons select the track to be edited; with 16 buttons each step of the track can be activated an is then displayed by an LED.

For each step in each track a "repeat" can be activated, resulting in repeated triggers within one step. The number of repeats can be selected from one to eight by the REPEAT knob. Additionally, the repeat count can be CV controlled by the REPEAT CV input.

The inputs MUTE 1/2 allow to mute the outputs 1 and 2 by an external signal (e.g. for muting a kick drum)

Each of the 16 steps has a separate trigger output for additional control for certain steps or limiting the sequence length by connecting one of the outputs to the RESET input.

Use it for any kind of rhythmical patterns, typically for triggering drum sounds or envelope generator!

No, it has no pattern load/save features; this will be part of a future, much more complex sequencer. TRIQ164 is designed as improved replacement for the STEP10.

TOPOGRAF is a drum sequencer with three tracks, that works with a "topographic" principle; it contains a number of drum patterns arranged in a "virtual map"; and with two knobs MAP X and MAP Y you can set a position in this map. With one knob per channel the density is defined; and a CHAOS knob brings some randomness into the whole process. All in all, a few knobs for a lot of drum patterns you probably wouldn't make this way by yourself - a nice source of inspiration and also great for playing live.

Dual hybrid oscillator
Notes: The 2OSC/d module contains two 1V/octave hybrid oscillators. Each of them features:

- One frequency knob plus a range switch +2 octaves
- CV input (1V / octave)
- PWM input
- SYNC input
- Sawtooth/Square/Sub-octave output

The pulsewith knob controls either the pulsewidth of the first oscillator (with the second one having a fixed pulsewidth), or via a switch the second oscillator is also controlled by the pulsewidth knob. Both oscillators can be pulsewidth-modulated independently by their PWM inputs.

The module is designed as a hybrid digital/analogue module; the oscillator frequencies are determined digitally and are therefore quite stable and have a good tracking; the output wavefom itself is created analogue. It's a new idea/concept that I have implemented here; the design causes the waveform to get a bit gritty at higher frequencies (but not "digital noise") - it's the character of this thing!

Notes: This module is based on a design used also by Ken Stone for his CGS system; the original circuit dates back to a publication from 1973.

Basically, the WAVEFOLDER clips and folds the incoming waveform; usually, waveforms with little overtones (like triangle or sinewaves) are used as input. In general, by the clipping and folding, the signal enriches the input signal with more overtones.

Analogue 16-step CV sequencer
Notes: The SEQ16 is a 16-step sequencer for controlling oscillator pitch and triggering envelopes.

Compared to "classic" analogue sequencers it works a bit different: Instead of setting the CV for each step independently (which means in fact "tuning" each step which can be a bit tedious), the SEQ16 has 5 knobs for pre-setting different CV's (= notes); each of the 16 step knobs selects one of these CVs, plus 0V (=base note) plus Pause (no trigger output). So some CVs have to be fine-tuned once; with the step knobs you can focus entirely on the sequence itself and you can even modify it on the fly, still remaining in tune.

An additional feature is "accent"; this can be set for each step by turning the knob fully clockwise. If a step is set to "accent", a separate trigger output is set and also a gate repeat for the regular gate output can be selected (from one to eight repeats).

Modor Comb Filter Module (synth module)

14HP Eurorack digital filter
Notes: What is a Comb Filter? It is a digital filter where the input signal is mixed with a slightly delayed version of the input signal. You won't hear it as some kind of an echo, as this delay is very short (40ms at max). But the mixing process creates a number of equally spaced peaks and holes in the frequency spectrum, that make it look like the teeth of a comb. That's where the name 'Comb Filter' comes from.

Comb filters are typically used to make chorus and flanger style effects. These effects are created by modulating the delay time. With longer and relatively fast modulated delays you receive a chorus effect. With short to very short slowly modulated delays, combined with some feedback you'll get the typical sound of a flanger unit.

So, the most interesting parameter in this is the delay time. That determines the frequency spacing of the comb teeth. So that's why there's a CV control for it. The typical chorus and flanger effects are made by modulating the delay time with a triangle LFO. So there's a triangle LFO onboard the module, with speed control. If you don't enter any CV in the CV1 connector, it is normalled to this internal LFO to make typical effects. CV2 is normalled to the reverse signal of CV1, to make Modor's typical wide stereo effects, just as on the NF-1 synthesizer. But of course, you can enter your own CV signals in there: LFO's, Envelopes or some rhythmically undulating spacy voltage signals...

The centre big DELAY control sets the delay time, the DEPTH control sets the amount of CV modulation of the delay time. DEPTH can go positive and negative.

The MIX control sets the dry/wet mix. The FEEDBACK controls the amount of feedback. It can be set both positive and negative. The SPEED control sets the pace of the internal triangle LFO.

Complex oscillation module - 22HP
Notes: The Noisy Oscillator module is an oscillator that mixes two signals: a 'regular' wave (sawtooth/square/triangle) and a 'tonal noisy' wave. This adds a special noisy layer over the sound, that adds 'air', grit or dirt, depending on the combinations you make. The MOD parameter acts on the noisy waveforms:

- Sonar Noise: a white noise filtered by a resonant bandpass filter, with 1V/oct tracking of the filter frequency. The MOD parameter controls the resonance.
- Wind Noise: white noise filtered by a comb filter, with 1V/oct tracking of the base frequency (delay). The MOD parameter controls a 6dB/oct hipass filter.
- Arcade Noise: LFSR noise source as can be found on the SID soundchips (Commodore) or Sega Arcade games. The MOD parameter controls again a 6dB/oct hipass filter.

The noisy wave can be set equal, or 1 or 2 octaves above the regular wave.

The module has two voices, with their own set of CV and output connectors. This can be used to play in a full 2-voice polyphony, or in a 2-voice unison. The outputs can be separate, using both output connectors, or mixed, using only the connector of the second voice.

Next to the 1V/oct pitch CV, the module offers CV control over pitch (FM), the MOD parameter and the sound level:

- FM CV: pitch control normalled to 0V, attenuated with the FM knob (+ and -). This allows for Frequency Modulation up to the lower audio range. It's of course a digital module, so higher frequencies can start inducing aliasing and digital artefacts.
- MOD CV: CV control for the MOD parameter, normalled to 0V and attenuated with the CV AMT knob (+ and -).
- LEVEL CV: CV control for the sound volume, normalled to 7.5V. With this CV control you can omit an external VCA stage if you want.

The CV signals of the second voice (upper row of connectors) are always normalled to the signal of the first voice (lower row), so you can use a single LFO for some FM vibrato or tremolo on both voices, for example. Only the V/oct connector of the second voice is normalled to the first voice with an extra addition of a fixed voltage that can be set using a trimmer at the backside of the module. This way you can use the 2 voices to play in unison with a fixed pitch separation you can set on the backside.

Compact joystick module with 8 memory slots & sequencer functionality - 10HP
Notes: With the Memory Joystick, you can control your modular system like an old video game console. Movements of the stick are recordable. Eight positions can be stored and recalled via buttons. Alternatively, it is possible to jump from one to the next value. The feel is then similar to a step sequencer. You can even vary the playback behaviour.

The Memory Joystick will always start in MANUAL MODE:

Moving the joystick generates CV at the X and Y outputs. Pressing HOLD will freeze the current position. The joystick movements are always being recorded in the background while the SAVE button is blinking. By pushing the SAVE button, now lit permanently, the playback of your movements will start. A RESET impulse resets the loop. Easy and enjoyable!

A little more complex, but not less enjoyable, is the second mode of operation. By pushing MEMORY, you enter the MEMORY MODE:

In this mode, you can use the eight buttons to save eight different joystick positions. This means you have a memory of eight values for the X and Y CV-outputs. You can then play these eight memory slots manually with the respective eight buttons, or sequentially with a CV at CV-MEM or with triggers at the TRIGGER input. While being clocked you can choose nine playback PATTERNS by the position of the joystick. So this module is also a joystick-playable eight-step sequencer!

The memory in MEMORY MODE is non-volatile, meaning you can power off your module and return to the exact setting.

Another nice feature of the Memory Joystick: The orientation can be varied by 180 degrees! This way, you can decide whether you want the buttons and jacks on the top or bottom of the module. When using the module upside-down, there is a nice little trick: Push a little switch on the back of the module to invert the X & Y outputs and also shift the starting position of the sequencer by four steps.

Quad polyphonic wavetable oscillator with 4 voices per VCO - 29HP
Notes: The 4Vox is a quad wavetable oscillator with up to four voices per VCO, resulting in a maximum of 16 voices at four individual outputs. With the MIDI In, the module can be played both with CVs and directly via MIDI, which also allows for modulating some additional parameters. There are 39 memory locations for wavetables and 32 for all global parameters of the VCOs.

The parameters of a wavetable can be controlled by CVs and by MIDI. For instance, you can morph through a wavetable with a CV, a MIDI controller or manually with the potentiometer. The range of waves within a wavetable can be selected by minimum and maximum values individually per voice which allows for creating more complex morphs.

Further controllable parameters are Detune, Semitone, Octave, Chord, Portamento, Amplitude and Amp Move (90 degrees phase shifted volume modulation of a VCO's 4 voices). Min and max values can be selected for those parameters as well. Via MIDI it's possible to control further parameters (notes, chords, pitch bend, patch selection and wavetable selection).

The VCOs can be played analogue (frequency by Pitch CV input), monophonic via MIDI or 4-voice polyphonic via MIDI.

The VCO can be used as a voltage controllable LFO with 3 modes: loop, one shot and gates. The SYNC input is used to trigger/reset the LFO. In one shot mode the LFO can be used as a trigger delay, too (SYNC = trigger in, GATE = trigger output, PITCH = delay time).

Each VCO has an analogue 1V/octave input including a fine tune control (+/-1 semitone) and pitch control (approx. 10 octaves), two freely assignable CV inputs, two freely assignable potentiometers, a trigger input for Sync/LFO-reset as well as a Gate and VCO/LFO output

The display can show a graphic of the selected waveforms.

All global parameters and also the VCO's settings can be named and saved as a non-volatile patch by the user. 32 memory locations are available.

4-channel CV recorder, looper & lo-fi sampler - 14HP
Notes: Four-channel recorder/looper for recording and playing back control voltages or potentiometer movements in a very wide frequency range, from very slow to fast. The output is a smoothed voltage without audible increments due to an algorithm with 16 bit resolution.

Synchronization via clock or MIDI and "punch-in" recordings are possible. The recording time per channel is up to one hour (such us MIDI clock) independent of selected sync mode.

Four independent channels are used for recording control voltages from analogue sequencers, LFOs, envelope generators, joysticks as well as potentiometer movements. It's possible to record/playback CVs in 16 Bit resolution either in the -5V to +5V range or from 0V to +10V. You can set the range individually for each channel.

SOURCE determines the record source. This can be the CV input, the potentiometer or both. ZOOM is a two stage fine adjust function of the control ruler.

Playing back the tracks can happen manually, via a Trigger, a Gate or via MIDI Start/Stop. Following modes are possible: LOOP, SINGLE (one shot), GATE (gated playback) and SCAN (CV scanning). Using the SCAN mode, the recorded sample can be scanned via CV input or the pot of the channel. It is possible to manually play the track velocity and direction (feasible effects: reverse, randomized, stuttering).

There are a number of possibilities to manipulate track playback. After the recording you can change the START point, end point (LENGTH) and playback SPEED or determine if the loop is set with the CVs or pots.

Using the LINK function, it is possible to group channels for multitrack or joystick recording: ALL allows for using all four channels individually. In DUAL mode tracks are grouped in sets of two or four tracks at any one time (e.g. for simultaneous recording of X and Y axes of a joystick).

Synchronization via clock or MIDI and "punch-in" recordings are possible with individual settings per track and with automatic detection of the clock frequency (number of clocks per quarter). When synchronising to MIDI Clock (96 pulses per bar) you can record up to one hour. The HARD/SOFT setting uses different levels for the CV interpolation in Clock/MIDI sync mode.

Notes: The Flame FX16-CV module is a small low-cost DSP-based (Spin semiconductors FV-1, 24bit ADC/DAC) multi effect module, designed for small mobile Euro racks. 16 different multi-effect programs are available. There are three knobs with additional CV inputs to change the effect parameters. Also, it's possible to select the effect program with CV or pot.

Audio stereo input and stereo output levels are adjusted for modular rack levels. The input can be attenuated and is protected against level peaks. The dry/wet pot can be used manually for mixing between input and effect audio signal. The outputs are buffered by an op-amp. One red LED indicates clipping.

4-stage Analog Shift Register (ASR) module with built-in quantizer & digital noise generator - 14HP
Notes: The E102 is a 4-tap delay for control voltages (a digital implementation of the Serge ASR - Analog Shift Register). There is also a digital noise generator with 8 different types of noise spectra. With no CV patched into the INPUT jack, the digital noise is sampled. Each clock pulse (internally set by RATE or patched into CLOCK IN) samples the INPUT and stores it as a 14-bit value. Successive clocks then shift the sampled voltage to the next output. The sampled voltage is shifted in the delay line as OUT1 > OUT2 > OUT3 > OUT4. A quad 14-bit DAC drives the outputs with an accuracy of <1mv.

A unique addition to the traditional ASR is the voltage-controlled DELAY. Selectable in 3 ranges, this adds delay stages in-between each output. For example, if DELAY was 2, then it would take 6 additional clocks for the OUT1 to "travel" down the delay line to appear at OUT4. The INPUT is sampled once for each clock, no matter what the DELAY is. The outputs can be quantized to whole-note steps.

The most common use of the E102 is having each OUT drive a VCO. If you have a step sequencer, then use the sequencer's clock into CLOCK IN and the sequencer's CV out to INPUT. The 4 OUTs will then generate a musical canon (like "Row Row Row Your Boat") when driving 4 VCOs. Each VCO will play the same note as the prior clocked output. This is of course assuming DELAY = 1. DELAY is not the same as a 'clock divider': when DELAY is not 1 (say it is 12), then every sample clock, the INPUT is fed into the delay. In this case there are 12 clock-delay stages between each out. If 0.25V was sampled and appears at OUT1, then 12 clocks later that same 0.25V appears at OUT2. There is no delay from INPUT to OUT1. The delays are OUT1 to OUT2, OUT2 to OUT3, and OUT3 to OUT4. OUT1 is a 'traditional' sample/hold.

High-quality dual linear VCA with mixing functionalities
Notes: Audiophile Circuits League VC Dual Amp contains two fully discrete voltage controllable amplifiers with linear characteristic. It is based on a new circuit design which delivers unheard clarity of sound. To this day there is no other VCA using this special technique!

The module offers a very low harmonic distortion in the whole linear gain range, no crossover distortion and no overshoots nor ringing. Furthermore, it has a very high dynamic range which provides a lot of headroom. The VCAs will amplify the input signal very accurately and it will sound crystal clear, without any coloration, distortion or bleed. Beside the two individual audio outputs from each VCA, there is a Sum-output which provides the mix of the output of both VCAs and of the signal coming from the Aux-input. This additional input has no level control and is mixed at unity gain. Thus three different signals can be mixed together.

The amplifiers are also suitable for processing control voltages thanks to a completely DC-coupled signal path. Behind its simple appearance, this module shines with its functionality and sound quality!

Gritty sounding delay effect with open feedback path - 10HP
Notes: The Coma Reactor module from Animal Factory Amplification is an innovative delay with a variety of sonic possibilities.

It is based on a PT2399 delay chip and offers amazing routing and sound design options.

The Coma knob is an attenuator for the input signal. Low levels can generate funny noises. The input signal is mirrored at the Thru output, for further processing with another module.

There are separate dry and wet potentiometers to adjust the desired effect amount.

The delay time ranges from 30 to 2000 ms. It can be controlled manually via the Time knob or with control voltage thanks to the MOD input, which is equipped with an attenuverter and a switch for setting the amount of modulation. Furthermore there is a LED which indicates the CV polarity.

The delay features a feedback knob for controlling the repeats. Turned fully clockwise it will bring up self-oscillation.

Thanks to an integrated send/return path it is possible to use the module with external effects. The volume of the external effect is controlled by the Return potentiometer. If nothing is connected to send/return, the delay signal is routed internally through a crude twin-T Bandpass Filter. The effected signal can be fed back into the delay circuit thanks to a dedicated Return Feedback knob.

Overdrive/distortion module
Notes: Full-blooded distortion - Pit Viper is a solid state overdrive for hard-boiled musicians. The circuit can generate clean, beefy signal boosts. However, its true strengths lie in aggressively screaming distortions with a tangible character.

Pit Viper comes equipped with the following control elements:

- Toxicity: Gain potentiometer - Please turn up for heavy distortion.
- Hiss: Tone knob - Turn clockwise to cut the treble.
- Venom: Volume potentiometer
- Fear: Three-stage soft clipping switch - Activates normal soft clipping or a more tube-like version with less treble.
- Malice: Three-stage hard clipping switch - Activates beefy hard clipping or a spongier version with less treble.
- Blend: Dry / Wet potentiometer
- Bite: CV input plus attenuator to cut the high frequency range. Without a cable plugged in, the knob can be used for adjusting the treble manually.
- Saturation: CV input plus attenuator and on/off switch to influence gain and saturation.
- Filter: CV input plus attenuator and on/off switch to control the Viper's VCF circuit.

Via a jumper on the circuit board, users can choose between several filter types:

- Passive clipped low pass
- Unbuffered high pass
- Buffered high pass
- Buffered low pass

Furthermore, there is a trim potentiometer on the circuit board, which can be used to adjust the gain.

Voltage controlled balance of two audio sources before processing through the high fidelity 8 stage wavefolder creates "crossfolds", unexpected and complex interactions of sound that can resemble through-zero FM synthesis, bizarre distortion, and even more mysterious results.

As lovers of wave shapers, we refined the Crossfold to produce timbres and patches that we were always seeking, patches that were either not possible, or required many more modules to accomplish before the Crossfold.

The Crossfold utilizes high quality op amps, multiple high quality VCA chips, and a small army of resistors and diodes to create a unique, hi fidelity wavefolder capable of producing sounds yet unheard of!

The fold and range controls with voltage control provide the main intensity level, with the range control setting the scope of the fold control, traveling from single folds, up to eight, further into clipping, which compresses and offsets the folds both into the positive and negative range. A built-in output limiter allows you to explore clipping effects without large volume spikes, while still allowing for a musical dynamic range.

The output stage has 3 modes selectable by a switch on the front panel: a voltage-controlled dry/wet of the input crossfader (great for balancing fundamental tones Vs added harmonics), wet vs. input 1 (great for mixing signals for the wet signal while maintaining a single dry signal), or as a final VCA to complete a voice or provide amplitude modulation of the output.

The Crossfold is capable of combining sources to produce low punchy basses, glassy marimbas, screaming synced leads, morphing alien drones, and much more. It even sounds amazing on bass guitar, thanks to its smooth distortion capabilities!

Notes: Each channel has a mono input and a gain control. The level can be set manually with a fader and modulated by a CV. Furthermore there's a panning function with a manual potentiometer for determinig the channel's panorama position and a CV input for modulating it.

In the dark highlighted, right part of the module we find the L and R outputs as well as the scanning function:
The "Center" parameter is used for selecting a channel, while "width" also selects the adjacent channels. For instance if channel 2 was selected with center control and remain static if is possible to fade in and out chennels 1 and 3 (or even 4).
It can be interesting to use this function with different wave forms of an oscillator but also with totally different signals. It can be even more exciting if the channels have different panorama positions which means the channels which are faded in appear in different stereo field positions.

Notes: The Control Voltage Processor from Verbos Electronics GmbH is a suite of control voltage processing possibilities divided into 3 sections in a slim 18HP package. The lower 2 sections are DC coupled mixers that allow mixing, inverting, offsetting, scaling, multiplying, dividing, crossfading or a combination of these functions. The top section is a voltage controlled slewing processor with independent control of Positive and Negative slew rate, with some unique tricks. The Positive and Negative slew, or Rise and Fall rates if you like, have reversing attenuators. The slopes can be blended from linear to RC curves (starting all slides fast and ending slow, like a proper "East Coast" Portamento) without a change in speed.
