Artificial Latvamaki - "(Song To) The Machine That Built The Sun"
Mark August - "Warm"
Review: This record is both aimed to the mind and to the dance floor. Whereas the A-side is more spacey, the B-side will raise the heat in the pit. That's exactly the idea behind this new label, Curle Recordings. Every Curle will be a split EP: two artists with each one track. On the first one, Curle is proud to present Artificial Latvamäki from Finland. This young producer has already two truly terrific releases behind his name on both Trapez Ltd. and Budenzauber. It's an honour to have this wonderful epic track "(Song To) The Machine That Built The Sun" as the first record on Curle. The B-side is hosted by Mark August from The Netherlands. "Warm" is the follow up to his record on Mezzotinto. Building up gently, but a true cheer generator on the floor. Contemporary but yet timeless techno, that's what Curle is about. Minimal, yes, as in quality over quantity. Hasta luego!

Review: On his third studio full-length "&" Kompakt co-founder Michael Mayer has embraced the concept of collaboration. Each of the album's 12 tracks was co-produced with one of Mayer's many friends from within the electronic music community, including some notable names. It's a formula that guarantees both variety and freshness, as the swathe of highlights proves. Check, for example, the glistening melodies and hazy house throb of Gui Boratto and Voigt & Voight hook-up "State Of The Nation", the stylish electroclash-goes-synth pop hustle of Miss Kittin collaboration "Voyage Interieur", and the rubbery, hypnotic "Blackbird Has Spoken" (made alongside Agoria). Throw in fine contributions from Joe Goddard and Prins Thomas, amongst others, and you have an entertaining concoction.

Review: 'Unknown' anonymously contacted lots of blogs a while back, to introduce their new 'hush hush' side project. It could be a hoax of course, but that didn't stop everybody from here to Timbuktu (including Ellie Goulding) raving about it. In fact it's the latter's involvement that's led to speculation that it's actually the work of her recent beau, Skrillex. Who knows for sure, but what isn't in doubt is the quality of the music. #001 is a slow tropical affair, with a constant thumping kick and deep-in-the-Amazon atmospherics. Elsewhere we have the warped R&G(litch) of #002 (complete with 'ethereal' female vocals, wink wink) and the Actress-aping weirdness of #004.

Review: Legendary Parisian house man Gregory Karsa returns with the ninth EP in this self-released series, and it's every bit as deep, groovy and varied as the previous EPs. "Ether" shakes with a slightly shuffled drum arrangement and rolls of rhythmic techno loops layered above. Serious heads down, lights down business. "Try To Fight" chugs with a Chi-town boompty feel and cosmic flurries above while "Nebula" is nothing but a finger-snapping underwater jazz joint, the likes of which you could imagine fellow Frenchmark D'julz playing. Finally were whisked away to Detroit on "Cat Groove" before "Tom" says goodnight with a brilliantly loose and lolloping percussive minimal drum house groove. On Point.

Vincent Casanova - "Cypress Chill" (6:57)
Review: Based in Barcelona, Skip Audio is a fresh vinyl-only label that, if this debut release is anything to go by, could deliver some seriously ear-catching tech-house tracks in the months and years ahead. That's a lofty claim for sure, but we'd argue that the four cuts showcased on this EP are worthy of such lavish praise. Check first the crunchy drums, snaking bass and watery electronic motifs of Giuliano Lomonte's 'Versatile', before admiring the slowly pulsing pads, rising and falling melodies and snappy beats of Viceversa's wonderfully tuneful and sunny 'Eyes Cat'. Fabrizio Maurzi offers something a little tougher, darker and chunkier in the shape of 'Peace of Mind', while Vincent Casanova doffs a cap to the sci-fi sounds of early UK tech-house on spacey closer 'Cypress Chill'.

Review: Ukrainian breakbeat/grime crew Tysk have presented showcases at Kyiv's Closer, Brave Factory Festival and Module in Dnipro. Now the crew has launched its own vinyl label and release this remix EP. You've got some old-school northern UK vibes on the tough shuffle of Alex Pervukhin's Bleep mix of 'Legit Check' and channeling the same era is Komponente & Kurilo's heady Par Acid mix. Over on the flip, Koloah 2000 and Trippsy go progressive trance on their respective mixes, and SAXR Modular delivers a wonderfully wonky stepper on his rework of 'On Tour'.

Review: Swedish duo Skudge bend to popular demand and repress their highly sought after first three releases in a limited edition box set which makes for the perfect last minute Christmas present for those concrete heavy techno enthusiasts in your life. Looking back on these six tracks, it's a mark of Skudge's quality that the likes of "Convolution" and "Overture" still sound gut punchingly good some two years on, and it's also a chance to marvel how far Skudge have come. They emerged with a ready made sound that immediately impressed and swiftly went on to establish a platform for their music on their own terms as well as introducing a curatorial label in Skudge Presents that has given the likes of MRSK, October, Aardvarck and Rivet the chance to shine.

Review: Back in June, the Red District label launched via a multi-artist EP showcasing the work of a quintet of largely little-known producers. The imprint has decided to repeat the trick on this welcome follow-up. Check first the odd but inspired, surprisingly funky tech-house/deep house fusion of Primarie's swirling 'Cu Sau Fara Energie', before admiring the locked in late-night hypnotism of Chiodan's glassy-eyed minimal house cut 'Cauta'. Zlatnichi delivers a more glitchy, Romanian minimal-style version of the same groove-based hedonism on fainty foreboding flipside opener 'Rasharafu', before Cvtkvc brilliantly layers up alien-sounding melodies, deep space motifs and echoing electronics on cybernetic closing cut 'Nedogled'.

SoulPhiction - "Temptations"
Daniel Stefanik - "Studio R"
Freund Der Familie - "Kantine"
Oyeq - "Night Park"
Review: Near Berlin's Ostbahnhof station lies Studio R, a hidden internet streaming podcast bunker: like the Boiler Room but done the German way with no fanfare. Their release operandi so far seems to be the various artist approach, and after making a statement with their first EP, which included a track from DJ Qu and DJ-turned-producer Eric Cloutier, the quietly confident Studio R present a further four names. Soulphiction starts off with an analogue plodding disco cut 'n' shake "Tempation" while Kann artist Daniel Stefanik dedicates his track to the label by calling it "Studio R", which is something reminiscent to Parallax Beat Brothers' "Exhalation" who DJ Sprinkles famously remixed. On the flip is a dubby rhythm track by the Freund Der Familie crew, who recently showed they have what it takes to produce music like this on a larger scale with last year's Alfa album, but most interestingly on this EP is a track by the so far unknown Oyeq, providing something which sounds like a melodic trip that could have come out of camp Giegling.

Review: Burnski's and Jon Woodall's Constant Sound sublabel Constant Black continues its march into the underbelly of heads down club tracks with this installment from the hitherto unfamiliar Constant. Whether it's Burnski under a different guise remains to be seen, but the quality of the tracks is the prime concern here. The A1 track is the perfect blend of tech house, with a hooky rhythm section and all manner of shimmering sonic delights spread out on top. The A2 taps a more reduced house vein, keeping the beats slender and the melodic elements subtle and dubby. The B side cut seems to merge the two to create a bubbling slice of swinging funk for the subliminal generation.

Review: After releasing two installments last year, the Studio R collective commit themselves to a triple-pack release that quite frankly lays waste to the competition when it comes to contemporary house and techno compilations. With a cast that includes Fred P, Brendon Moeller, DJ Spider, Hakim Murphy and Exercise One, you can't argue with the quality of the work. There's a range of moods on offer but everything resides in the murkier corners of 4/4, and with a definite floor-focused quality to each of the creations, there's a lot of mileage to be gained from investing in this bumper pack of 12 solid jams.

Review: DATA17 is back with more of that irresistible hand-stamped white label minimal and tech house goodness. 'Pour Toi' kick off this particular party with high speed tech funk loops and crashing hits that demand you dance while wonky synth lines unfold up top. The clipped and kinetic funk continues on 'C La Vie' which has distant playground found sounds and balmy pads and 'Sous Influence' that slips down into superbly icy and economical minimal grooves, with nagging leads hooking you in as the militant drums march below. It's an eerie and futuristic sounds completed with some spoken words from Blade Runner.

Review: Slinky, minimal tech house quite capable of rocking open air beach parties as it could an underground after hours affair and reminiscent of sounds from Dan Ghenacia's Freak 'Chic imprint several years ago. The Manchester duo have been doing their thing for a while now and give us their sixth release on their own imprint. Wet Dog" does bouncy basslines and high pitched toms with weird vocal samples as does "Esp". On the flip is the darker groove of "Old Fool" while "Tell Me" which gets funkier and uses the same samples from "Let No Man Put Asunder" by First class that their old Cecille label mate Butch did, a few years ago.

With previous titles such as 'Born Trippy' and more blatantly 'Rihanna', 'Chaka' or 'Bonobo' - you can kinda see where this lot are coming from. For their tenth edition though, they've put a twist on a modern microhouse classic (guess which one) on "Easy". Whoever churned out this one certainly had some audacity, but respect to them! Over on the flip, we have some boompty swing-fuelled deepness on 'Resist' followed by a dope hip-hop joint in the form of 'Game' which provides a welcome change in tempo.

Review: Continuing the spate of remixes commissioned off the back of the Heliosphere album, 50Weapons put Benjamin Damage under the knife with a pair of modern techno mavens. SCNTST is something of a prodigal young talent from Germany, previously appearing on a pair of singles for Boys Noize. Here he crafts a multifaceted version of "010x" that moves through myriad moods and headspaces from calming pad drenched lulls to breakbeat-fuelled roughness, but always marching ahead with a technoid sense of purpose. Meanwhile Truncate brings a more delineated kind of workout that sports the hallmark focus of the L.A. based producer. Po-faced drums and hypnotic melodic hooks meet with more gentle ambient washes to create a flawless slice of contemporary techno.

Review: Last seen sharing vinyl space with 100Hz and Voightmann on his own E Numbers imprint a couple of years back, Bobby O'Donnell resurfaces via a collaborative outing with Reeshy, a fellow Leeds resident who is seen by many as a rising star of the Yorkshire scene. In keeping with the PILOT label's breakbeat-driven, retro-futurist feel, each of the four cuts on show doff a cap to turn of the '90s rave culture. This is arguably best exemplified by weighty, funky and spacey bleep & breaks jam '2', though the arguably even more sub-heavy, UK garage influenced opener '1' comes a close second. Elsewhere, '3' delivers subtle nods towards Rob Gordon and Richard H Kirk's short-lived XON project (look it up, kids) while '4' is an acid-flecked warehouse shuffler.

This is its first release in 11 years, presenting part one of the Knucklehead Series featuring a fine selection of moods and grooves. Review: Robbie Akbal's Akbal Music clearly rolls well of the tongue, and is based in Cancun, Mexico, which is refreshing compared to the usual Berlin-London-Colgne-Paris-Amsterdam affairs. The dude's been representing Mexico's house and tech scene very well indeed, and this latest EP marks a whopping ten years of service; the man couldn't exactly stay quiet about it, so he's gone and recruited some top talent to celebrate. German deep house wizard Sascha Dive comes through with "Lab#4", a lean, efficient dancefloor warmer with a slick groove, which is followed by the dub cut to "Uluwatu", a supremely funky house slinger by Superlounge. Mano Andrei takes control of the B2 with "Never End", a mystical slice of 4/4 cimplete with a ridiculously deep set of pads, while DoubtingThomas goes off on a minimal flex with the glitchy, stylized beats and melodies of "Encodeurs". Happy 10 years, Akbal!

Review: Here is the re-release of Matthew Herbert's first album "100 lbs", which was released originally in 1996 on the label Phono. Almost a classic by now, it is purely instrumental (so before the time he started to work with Dani Siciliano) and still sounds as fresh as a brand new release. As the album was originally released exactly 10 years ago, we're making this a kind of anniversary edition by releasing it as a 2xCD. The second CD will feature rare tracks & B-sides, most of those from the years 1995/1996.

Review: Glimpse finishes the black series again with tracks of contrasting styles. Heavy analogue melodic techno that tips its hat towards those classic chord days of old. This guy, without a doubt, influenced everyone who has ever produced funk-orientated music.

1000 Miles (Loco Dice remix)
Review: This is Martin Landsky's first 12" release in 2006. It took some time, but it definitely has been worth the wait. "Back (Go For The)" (pfr59) was his last release on Poker Flat in July 2005, so we were really keen to check out some new sounds of our long-standing friend Martin Landsky. He has created a dark and monumental piece of music, using simple but effective sound patterns, repeating them by adding nice delays and other smart fx, step by step slowly building it up in tremendously hypnotic fashion. Striking indeed! On the flip side it's Dusseldorf's Loco Dice, resident DJ at Ibiza's hippest DC10, a true global player, known and loved for his releases on Timo Maas' label Four Twenty, Josh Wink's Ovum, Sven Väth's Cocoon and Richie Hawtin's Minus. What a list! But back to the music. His remix of "1000 miles" is less dark, more funky, smartly playing around with some short soundtips, gliding softly towards a quiet break, before evolving to full power, step by step.

Liquid Harmony (DJ W!ld remix)
Liquid Harmony (303 version)
Review: King of the underground Parisian scene Chris Carrier delves deep into his acid house and classic old skool rhythm influences to bring you the 1000 Reasons EP on Catwash Records. Oddly the vocal in title track "1000 Reasons" only asks for one reason? Well, the 303 bassline alone is enough of a reason to catapult it straight into record bags and onto the dancefloor. "Liquid Harmony" bends to the groovier and more sensual side of Carrier as he showcases brilliant drum arrangements and crisp high ends. On the B-Side DJ W!LD takes "Liquid Harmony" into percussive and sexy realms, a whispered vocal lifting things to another level.

Review: In the best traditions of progressive house, Guy J's second studio album for long-standing employers Bedrock is something of a sprawling epic. Across three discs - two mixed, and the third featuring unmixed versionsA- the Israeli moves through a variety of atmospheric sounds and styles. The first disc showcases the downtempo side of his work; all touchy-feely ambience, glistening melodies and dub wise beats. The second disc, meanwhile, sees him head dancefloor-bound armed with a battery of Bedrock-friendly prog, tech and deep house weapons. For those who like their electronic music vast and expansive, it's worth investigating - just don't expect to get to grips with its intricacies in an afternoon.

Mistlur
Sliderglider
101 Regards
Review: Martinez, the Swedish producer, needs no introduction. On this 3rd Floor release Martinez brings three tracks. "Mistlur" combines old and new, layering tons of hypnotic and enchanting sounds that twirl in and out on top of the warm, driving bassline. "Sliderglider" represents the minimal and bouncy sound on this 12". The primary bassline is deep and driving and requires plenty of room, but the accompanying effects and synths have a more minimal feel to them, thus resulting in a very effective sound. "101 Regards" finishes off this electronic slaughter in a very hypnotic and building fashion. The siren-ish theme synth continually builds itself up, then, tears itself down, leaving the listener in a state of trance.

Trimming (Leif's Cheese Toastie remix)
Review: With current and upcoming releases on Moon Harbour, Morris/Audio, Frankie, Logistic & Telegraph, Tom Ellis and Leif are back from the Trimsound kitchen with a special triple-layer deep-fill extravaganza of an EP! Tom supplies the main ingredients, kicking things off on the A-side with a deep exploration of syncopated bleeps, beats and basslines exploding into a chunky dancefloor killer half-way through. On the B-side, Tom delivers the slamming funk track "Trimming", while Leif scales things down with his minimal, organic "Cheese Toastie" remix that is bound to get the floor moving! Top quality!

Review: Having notched up releases on the likes of Raum...musik and Apollonia, Makcim & Levi make the move to Lazare Hoche to deliver another shedload of hard-grooving house bombs for the deepest part of the night. The 1055ml EP is a mixed bag that leads with the title track, which encapsulates everything that's great about the stripped down house sound that Lazare Hoche is committed to. "Sandwiches" meanwhile is a quirky, bugging jam that wriggles under the skin in the most subtle of ways before "Sowhaa" brings a much more hypnotic, pad-laden blend to the table for a soft landing from this feisty 12" of forward-thinking 4/4.

Ripperton - "10A"
Lars Behrenroth - "Organism"
Review: Lars Behrenroth is a house producer who relocated from Hamburg to Los Angeles a few years ago. While still in Germany, Behrenroth was busy producing mainly deep house. "Organism" can definitely be classified as house, but not in that jazzy, musical kind of way. It rather lingers at the crossroads of recent Ibadan releases, Ame and Carl Craig. The track grandly and slowly glides towards a synth heavy climax, which will leave many dancefloors breathless.

Ripperton is a member of Lazy Fat People. With its precisely programmed beats generally inclined to melancholy and huge, emotional moments on the floor, "10A" continues to coin a sound which journalists recently tried to grasp as 'minimal trance'. Ripperton remains a true master of this genre. Considering the atmosphere of the track, this will open many hearts on a dancefloor near you.

Review: The Politics Of Dancing label celebrates its tenth anniversary with a special sampler EP featuring four on-point house cuts. Olivier Romero gets dark and deep with his menacing 'Shout The Killer,' Josh Baker's 'Can Anybody Help' then gets more upbeat and party-ready with its silky pads and upright kicks, while Cosenza explores a raw and percussive tech house vibe with busy lead that zips about the mix. It's pure Detroit house cruising with the closer from Camilo Gil & ONE Plus. Happy birthday to this fine label and here's to many effective more EPs like this one.

Parallax Deep - "Periscope" (11:13)
Review: Malmo's Per Hammar returns and inaugurates new imprint 10 Years Records. The Dirty Hands boss employs more deep house of the nubbier persuasion on "The Expedition For Mrs Gustavsson". This is without a doubt one the most curious track titles of 2017 thus far and will appeal to fans of the Samuel Andre Madsen sound. On the flip it is over to Fellow swede Maya Lourenco aka Parallax Deep with "Periscope" The artist formerly known as Lumieux and has appeared on Klasse Wrecks and 12-3 and continues on with the underwater aesthetic: diving deeper and employing some rolling lo-end dynamics to impressive effect also.

Review: There are only 250 of these around, so act fast if you want to secure a copy of Maya Lourenco's latest outing as Parallax Deep. It comes on 10YEARS, a label whose last release - way back in 2016 - boasted the Swedish producer's debut track, "Periscope". First up is "Intercept", a slick but robotic tech-house box jam with hypnotic tendencies, before Lourenco treads a deeper, more bass-heavy path on the smooth late night shuffle of "Decending" [sic]. Over on the flipside, old pal Per Hammar delivers a darker, heavier and more muscular "variant" of "Intercept", before our hero rounds things off with the beguiling, Pete Namlook style deep space ambience of "Drifting".

Dim (10:51)
Hey You (7:29)
Combo (7:33)
Review: With releases reaching back to 2009 on Fear Of Flying, Neostrictly and Broquade, Cally has more than earned his stripes in the field of stripped down tech house. This latest missive comes to light on Inwave, which has recently started operations with the likes of Vinyl Speed Adjust and Vincenzo Monastra at the controls. There's a strict economy of sounds at work on 11 Months, using slight textural and tonal elements to fill in the space between the tightly clipped beats, no more so than on A side cut "Dim". "Hey You" flirts with a looser rhythmic framework but still keeps the core groove steadfast before "Combo" spreads itself out into a scattershot techno pattern that sits in neat contrast to the housier propulsion of the other two tracks.

Review: It's hard to believe that Sven Vath's empire has been in existence for 11 years, but what's easier to comprehend is the label's unerring knack of releasing killer club techno. This compilation gives some of Vath's favourite artists - like Roman Flugel and Steve Rachmad - as well as newbies like Patrick Kunkel, who also provides a DJ mix, a chance to rework the catalogue. From Visionquest's murky but driving take on Dinky's "Acid in My Fridge" through the abrasive, jacking Flugel remix of Martin Buttrich's "Hunter", Carlo Lio's tribal take on Dubfire vs Huntemann's "Diablo" and the fist-pumping, big room techno of Paul Ritch's interpretation of 2000 & One's "Tropical Melons", there can be no doubt about this compilation's dance floor credentials.
