Review: DATA17 is back with more of that irresistible hand-stamped white label minimal and tech house goodness. 'Pour Toi' kick off this particular party with high speed tech funk loops and crashing hits that demand you dance while wonky synth lines unfold up top. The clipped and kinetic funk continues on 'C La Vie' which has distant playground found sounds and balmy pads and 'Sous Influence' that slips down into superbly icy and economical minimal grooves, with nagging leads hooking you in as the militant drums march below. It's an eerie and futuristic sounds completed with some spoken words from Blade Runner.

Review: Detroit legend Eddie 'Flashin' Fowlkes has had a truly massive month with a couple of releases on his esteemed Detroit Wax imprint (which he runs with Niko Marks) and this week he kickstarts his City Boy imprint back into action. This is its first release in 11 years, presenting part one of the Knucklehead Series featuring a fine selection of moods and grooves. First up is the deep down and dirty tech-funk of '1-2-3', followed by the dusty twilight mood music of 'Hold Me Down' and over on the flip is the double 12's most energetic cut in the form of 'Test Unknown' - a sincere expression in proper Motor city style 'hi-tech soul'.

Review: Swiss label Drumpoet has been one of those super reliable outlets that serves up good quality deep house. It has now been doing so for 15 years and marks the occasion with a bumper triple vinyl collection featuring 13 cuts from all the label's finest associates. There is brilliantly left-of-centre minimal from Roman Flugel and Frank Weidermann to kick off, then melody-rich deep house from Bubble Wrap, and an absolute classic from the one and only Herbert who supplies 'Air.' Plenty more lushness comes from the likes of Fred Everything and Ripperton to make this a fine collection.

Review: Fledging but already fine young label U.Dig out of Croatia is back with more final gold, this time from a master of the form in Alexis Cabrera. He kicks off with the mini-epic that is '1997.5', a real head-melting and elastic acid tune that is perfectly deep and rolling for the freaky afters. 'Straight Up' is more punchy and taught, with low-slung drums and crisp hits powering it forward. Last of all things get brilliantly unhinged on 'Microrama,' a kinetic and densely packed cut with flappy snares blaring synths, withering melodies and a true sci-fi feel.

Review: With a name like Chiwax you surely know what you're in for right? The German label serves up another Windy City classic by the legendary DJ Skull here - under his birth name Ron Maney - with the 2 Entities EP, originally released back in 1996 on the seminal Relief Records. A classic for those that know, it's got the spooky and minimalist shuffle of "Bring It Home" and the heads- down stomper "Reborn Souls" which is classic DJ Skull all the way, complete with its heady loops underpinned by skipping rhythms. On Side B, "Reconstruction" also has more of a mid-90's Chi-town techno sound, only this one's even more driving and nasty - a proper basement jam to be experienced under the strobe lights.

Review: Over the past few years Nick Gynn has been whipping up a storm with his loose and limber strain of trance-inflected club melters. Now he's landing in exactly the right spot to kick off 2022 alongside the good folk at EYA Records. Minting their Lonewolf series specifically, the 2000 & Something EP deals in maximal acid wrigglers with a playful but dark-tinted edge which should go down very well with the buoyant wave of psychedelic party people. Review: There is a niche scene out there right now where spaced-out breaks, deep house, prog, original tech house and trance are all getting distilled and reworked into compelling new sounds. This EP is a perfect example of that from Enzo Leep. It is bouncy but with real weight, colourful but serious and always nice and deep. '"2000's Dreams' is the balmy opener then there is more turbulence and twisted energy to 'Nasty'. Review: Rico Friebe is a name that is familiar to anyone who has kept an eye on the deep house world in the last decade. He now shows another side with a fresh offering of dubbed out grooves that find him delicately reinterpreting a pari of tunes from his singer-songwriter double-album Anthems For A Lost which is due early next year. Each side of this 12" features ten plus minutes of carefully interwoven melodies, shimmering synths and dubby drums that are spindled with organic percussion and laced up with barley-there vocals. Review: Tresor is celebrating 30 years in the game with a series of special reissue projects. This one really goes way back to almost the start, when Juan Atkins was already defining the early techno sound. For this one he linked up with Moritz von Oswald and Thomas Fehlmann in 1992 for a second iteration of the 3 Men in Berlin project. The monumental results join the dots between Detroit and Berlin across a collection of timeless cuts that meld bassline funk, hypnotic minimalism and soulful machine sounds into propulsive, emotive dance floor joy. The unbridled energy and cosmic elegance of 'Jazz Is The Teacher' might just be the highlight.

Review: Constant Black is one of the numerous labels in UK artist Burnski's orbit. He's been a man on form on all fronts in recent years and here he snaps up Retrospect for a trio of super slick and funky minimal house cuts. 'Ay-up!' is a cheeky opener with subtle northern welcomes hidden in the mix as the lithe bass and 2-step tinged drums do their thang. It's reet good. 'Schneebly' gets more pacey and balmy, with silky and oily bass and kinetic drum work all underpinned by a sick bass tone. Last of all comes '4 U' which has something of an upright garage skip and downright irresistible groove. These are high functioning, charismatic cuts to pump up any floor.

Review: Some six years after the label's last outing, Moody Grass returns via a rock-solid outing from lesser-known producer Valentin Zad and - on the two A-side tracks at least -collaborator Klatt. EP opener '42' is wonderfully hard to pin down, with fuzzy coldwave synth sounds and glacial electronic melodies riding a beat that sits somewhere between relaxed electro and IDM, while 'Answer' adds icy synths and heady electronic string sounds to a locked-in tech-house beat. Elsewhere, 'What Have I Said' is another coldwave-influenced, post-electro nugget - this time with beefier sub-bass - and 'Artefacts' is a tough and ghostly chunk of electro/tech-house fusion.

Review: Though 420 was originally recorded and released in April of 2020, Galcher Lustwerk's pandemic project is an exercise in counting and patience. Originally from a 16 track, 69 minute release only available for Bandcamp for $69 (or $4.20 per track), the 420 project brings us practically brand spanking new Galcher EP, just under a different name. Finally at an accessible price (and including signature Galcher vocals in a majority of the tracks to boot) this vinyl release hopes to bring more fans who missed the original release to the 420 club.

Review: Looks like we have another Digwah white label in this week. The label first appeared on our radar several years ago with its second release 'Something Else' by an anonymous artist who threw down a sublime vocal by Cuba Gooding over a pumping acid tech house groove. Fast forward to DIGWAH 07, the formula remains the same and is still rather effective. In this case, the vocals are taken from a rather legendary early '90s pop collaboration over a hypnotic, bass-driven minimal house groove aimed squarely at the afterhours dancefloor.

Review: It's been a while since the Albion stable graced our platters, but they're back in style with more of that on-point house music voodoo for the heat of the night. This single is a vessel for the various sides of Tommi Vicari Jr, who rolls out his Czevski alias to deliver a bruising remix of "57 Hertz" by 76-79. It's a reverb-soaked, dubbed out affair with a rock solid rhythm section and plenty of trippy FX tweaking on top. On the flip it's a different story with a similar feeling as we get the straight up Tommi Vicari Jr material in the shape of two killer tracks crafted for transcendental moments of dancefloor hypnosis.

Review: Notorious internet motormouth Thomas Cox dropped the first EP on his own new QED label back in 2020, but only now is the vinyl arriving with us. It was worth the wait, however, because as much as it would be fun to find the sort of faults in his music that he does in everyone else's, these are three raw as you like tracks that go direct to the soul. Detroit influences of course loom large throughout, with each cut layering up dirt and grime, dusty drums and rusty synths to hypnotic effect. The standout might be the unresolved loops and cosmic-gaze of 'Starry Ave,' but any of these will make an impact on the right dance floor.

Review: Baby Ford's Trelik label is as revered as they come in underground circles. Ion Ludwig is not far behind when it comes to his productions and so the two are a perfect match who reunite once more here. This fresh 12" kicks off with the brain cleansing minimalism of 'A Beladen Date 4 Ever', a silky groove doused in harmonic chords, with swirling pads and rubbery bass all tightly intertwining. 'Transport Fighter' is a more punchy cut with thudding kicks and heftier bass, but still a nebulous eco-system of pads and melodies swirling around up top. Two killer cuts. no doubt.

Review: The highly politicised Los Angeles collective Ultra Red re-released their superb A16/A17 12" last year. Both tunes were produced entirely from field recordings made during street protests against the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington April 16 and 17, 2000 and became secret weapons of DJs like Ricardo Villalobos & Craig Richards. Now, 'A16' gets remixed by underground titans Losoul and The Mole into two club-ready groovers. Losoul goes first with a dry and minimal take that is textured and deep with plenty of absorbing atmosphere. Next up, The Mole goes for a more propulsive sound with glistening tech house drums and icy pads. Both are artful reworks that take you on a mental trip.

Zefzeed takes the reins of the first sonic statement with four tracks of sophisticated and deep house and tech. Review: A much-loved DJ in the minimal/tech house scene, Gwenan has made a name for herself over recent years thanks to her notable DJ appearances in packed-out clubs and breezy big-stage festivals. Finally unveiling her skills in the studio, Marginal Returns are the lucky hosts of her debut release. On the A-side, 'Rhythm Delay' unfolds as a heady, downtempo, dub-shrouded track. For the A2, 'Foundation' picks up the pace with delicate, glass-resonatory highs and a pumping bassline. On the flip side, 'Control Change' twists and turns through wonky beats and a blissful melodic background. While the closing track, 'Attention Movement' takes a darker direction, with melancholic synths joining abstract electric guitar samples. Review: Progressive house was always huge across Eastern Europe and so it is that this lush new offering comes from Estonian label Gestalt. Modex is at the buttons and opens with the twisted synth lines and multi-layered rhythm of 'Isometra' which is bright and endlessly energising. 'Enagic' has a more undulating groove that never lets you settle but more colourful synth lines and then 'Nairoosh' strips things back a bit to a more serene sound that is always on the rise. 'Flow State' shits down with the most prickly energy of the lot and more warped synths for heady excursions.

Review: After a couple of quiet years Ferro's VBX label returns with a bang, as the esteemed Dutch minimal producer links up with none other than Ricardo Villalobos for a run of 'Ferric' jams. Enlightened souls should have some idea of what to expect here, as Ferro's snappy grooves collide with Villalobos' meandering sound collages to create psychoactive termites geared towards twisting out the dancefloor good and proper. This is proper minimal, with the percussion chiselled into fine clicks and pops to leave more space for the trippy elements to weave their magic. The quality comes assured from this new pairing, hopefully paving the way for more collaborations in the future.

Review: Long time friend Akyra from Switzerland (by way of Italy) follows up releases on Blind Vision, WE_R House and Modula Records to join One Of 4, on this latest release alongside Italian compatriot Demi James. It's once again SNP 500 behind this later batch of fresh beats and as ever they serve as a portal in a sublime techno universe. Review: Joe Babylon's cultured US label Roundabout Sounds has never rushed music out but when it does serve up new material it is always timeless and top quality. This latest EP is the first installment in the new All Hands series and it features some real house heavyweights. Frits Wentink kicks off with the mystic and lo-fi depths of 'Jellyfish, then DJ Aakmael layers up his soft edge chords and cuddly kicks drums with some muted horn motifs that bring the romance. Review: UK underground stalwart Matt Tolfrey has enlisted a bunch of interesting remixers to rework tunes from his still-excellent 2020 album All Shades and Different Size on his own Leftroom. Synth wizard Mathew Johnson goes first and layers in lots of dancing pads and fizzing electronic lines to his take on 'How It's Gonna Be' before Maher Daniel gets much more direct and physical with a kicking tech house take on 'Feel The Same' that has viscous snares powering it forwards. Silverlining then steals the show with a super seductive and dubbed house house take on 'Fantasy' that is pure backroom vibes and Sakro shuts down with a perfect wonky afterparty head wrecker with his remix of 'Under The Skin'. The EP kicks off in style in the shape of 'Intercity': straddling a square 4/4 house rhythm with an 'Art of Trance' spirit - all brought together in contemporary style. Layers of subtly filtered melody pulsate their way throughout, rising and falling as minimal elements collide for maximal sonic impact.Switching to more familiar territory, 'Time Shift' reins things back a notch as tight 909 beats swing to well rounded bottom end, carrying the warm layers of evolving synths and chorded elements with precision effect. Ending on the introspective mood of 'Counterclockwise', Beringer displays an even defter touch, heralding the light fantastic as the spectre of night passes by.

Review: Subset makes a welcome return to Greyscale with his second full-length album after the success that was This Quiet Earth. The follow-up, Ambient Particles, is another widescreen work of great cinematic details that again showcase Sunset's studio skills. The track titles give an insight into his thinking behind the music with the likes of 'Sandstorm on Mars' swirl of textured pads over baron landscapes of undulating bass and 'Cocooned Under the Stars' feels adrift in the endless darkness of space with only distant twinkling pads for company. Elsewhere 'Chains In The Wind' is a spacious and dubby ambient techno trip and 'Ambient Particles' brings a little more movement with its rolling drums. A sophisticated and soothing album once more from Subset.

Review: Though his career has taken many turns over the last decade, DJ Koze has remained that most illusive of creatures: a minimal-minded producer with an ear for a melody. This fourth full-length, packed to the rafters with big-name collaborations (Apparat, Caribou, Ada and Matthew Dear all feature), continues his move towards the home-listening sphere. So, while many of the heady rhythms and shuffling grooves hark back to his stripped-back past, Amygdala impresses with its woozy songs, genre-straddling fusions (see the modern soul meets deep house of "Homesick" or the steppy, tropical vibes of "Marilyn Whirlwind") and homely atmosphere.

Review: LILA mainstay Ayaavaaki and ambient veteran Purl speak different languages but used a translator to convey ideas to one another as they made this record. And they very much foment their own unique musical language on Ancient Skies, an album that blends ambient, drone and space music into richly layered soundscapes that are constantly on the move. Each piece is meticulously crafted and suspense you up amongst the clouds, hazing on at the smeared pads and swirling solar winds that prop you up. It's a record that would work as well in the depths of winter as a bright spring day such is the cathartic effect of the sounds. Beautiful, thought-provoking and innovative, this is as good an ambient record as we have heard all year.

Review: Who ever has been to Aix En Provence on the Mediterranean in France, will find it hard to stop rhapsodizing about it. For towns like Aix they invented the word picturesque. This colourful and quaint beauty makes us sulky-grey metro-Berlin people's eyes bleed. Nevertheless Mary Jane (aka Bloody Mary) swapped the cours Mirabeau with the Berlin TV tower and shows the big city where it's at with her dusky-deep minimal techno. This could not remain undiscovered very long, because Bloody Mary is mixing her ingredients of deep basses, profoundly buzzing sound-effects and bleeps with such a precision, that you get pitchforked onto the dancefloor right away, where standing ovations take turns with tumultuous dance-scenes. The record has been co-produced by Tassilo Ippenberger, also known from his Pan-Pot Project on Mobilee Records. Three tracks, that don't leave any question unanswered and match with sender perfectly. And Mary, don't worry, you will also survive you first Berlin Winter.

Review: RWN shows off the deftness of his sound designs here with four cuts of deep house and minimal that float in the cosmos. That's not to say they lack drive and dynamism - far from it. 'Apres L'heure' is beautifully serene and clean with a nimble groove underpinned by warming bass. 'August Rain' is another artful and painterly affair with wispy pads and melodic curlicues peeling off a shuffling and soft rhythm. 'Astrox' layers up the cosmic soundscapes with drums and bass that seamlessly intertwine and 'Forgive' is a majestic mix of tumbling arps, ambient synth work and compelling rubbery rhythm.

Review: The Meld label continues to establish itself and its sound in the murky minimal and tech house undergrowth with another fresh EP. This platter comes from Londoner Kawaii San who kicked the year with a fine outing on Magic Carpet and now builds on that with four more aqueous and innovative grooves. 'Poetry In Motion' is a thumping cut in the mould of the early Eddie Richards sound. 'More & More' has a dubber low end a little more room for trippy details and zippy synth motifs. 'Aqualand' is a smooth and serene cosmic viber and then proving he has real range, San's final cut 'Tape Display' rides on a nice broken beat.

Review: Aterral Limited has taken things slowly to start with but that's fine because the quality of the label's first few releases has remained high. Carlo is behind this one and opens up the EP with 'Hungover', a tune that features Black Loops, who has previously released his own EP on the label. It's lithe, funky deep house with silky synth work and classic drums. Review: 'At Les' is one of Carl Craig's most beloved productions: a gorgeously dreamy chunk of Innerzone Orchestra style tech-jazz that first surfaced - on a now in-demand compilation - 25 years ago. Craig has revisited it several times since, but it's Christian Smith's 2010 reworks - reissued on this 12" for the first time since - that are arguably the most peak-time ready and dancefloor-centric. On the A-side 'Tronic Treatment' version Smith layers the track's iconic synthesizer motif - heart-achingly poignant and drenched in delay - and deep, spacey chords over deep, rumbling sub-bass and a crunchy deep house beat. Smith ups the tempo and intensity on the arguably even better 'Hypnotica Mix', which is closer in tone to pure Motor City techno and features a genuinely spellbinding breakdown.

Review: Petre Inspirescu comes through to NYC's DisDat with a sly 3-tracker detailing only the slinkiest minimal dub, the techy dance equivalent of Slinky Malinky. Operating only at night, viallike metal clanks and ominous bass booms scour the ambient wastes of 'Foc', the track's name mirroring the utterance we find jumping from our mouths on first listen. 'Si' is comparatively peaceful, while 'Para' is a dubbed-out modular afterthought; all three tracks nail an intense backend of sound, not easily achieved under normal circumstances.
