Review: The inimitable Jamal Moss comes forth with his second offering for Madrid's Apnea records. 'The Moon Dance' unfurls over 11 tracks- in turns pensive, elegiac, and slammin'. Between the sedate expanse of opener 'When The Earths Shadow Falls On The Moon' and the final cymbal strokes of gauche, machine funk closer 'Mawu', Moss lifts us on yet another Afrofuturist space flight of fancy, passing through superclusters of deep house, tactile techno and stroboscopic piano jams along the way.
Standout moments include the smoove-as-u-like-it intergalactic lounge jazz diversion 'The Moondance Moon Walk Version'; its steezy stride-piano vamp seamlessly intertwining with Moss' signature babbling acid intrusions, the irresistibly groovy bump of 'Tethered 2 The Divinely Spaces With In' and the hypnotic sway of 'Celestial Poems Of The Lady With 10000 Names', which opens up from Terrence Dixon-esque introspection into broad windy city string washes and synapse-tickling bleeps. With this collection, Moss pens yet another crucial chapter in the seemingly bottomless hieroglyphic being scroll. While 'The Moon Dance' is one of his most accessible and harmonious works to date, it doesn't lose an ounce of the rawness and immediacy of his previous work. Essential listening!

Landing (Kyle Hall remix)
Review: Label boss El Prevost makes a welcome return to No Speakers after it's been on something of a break. Thankfully the quality levels remain high here as he kicks off with 'Catastrophizing', a brilliantly bass-heavy cut with broken beats to make you sweat. On the flip, 'Landing' has a more inward sense of reflection with its fizzing synths and deep space atmospheres making an indelible mark. Last of all, the magic of Detroit looms large with a superb remix by Motor City mainstay Kyle Hall. His version of 'Landing' brings some jazzy melodic vibes and one of his trademark deep house and bumping grooves. This is another essential 12" from No Speakers.

Review: A much needed repress of DJ ESP & Hoschi's The Mad Scientists EP on Minnesota imprint Communique has finally arrived. DJ ESP aka label chief Woody McBride, legend of the Midwest scene, takes over the first side with the droning and mental energy of '4 Days In The Laboratory' followed by one more cerebral cut in the form of 'New Body' which will have you trancing out under the strobe lights. Over on the flip, Hoschi's contribution is the high-octane peak time acid thriller that is the title track.

The Highway features everyone's favourite duo Oden & Fatzo with the early Underground Resistance vibes of 'Queen Of The Highway' followed by the Saar & Mryn's hypnotic back room dub 'Since The Beginning' on side A. Review: Legendary minimal - and acid house before that - pioneer Baby Ford very much set the blueprint for the genre back in the late 90s, both solo and with The Ifach Collective, who featured Ian Loveday, Mark Broom and Thomas Melchior (amongst others). Now they are reminding us of the greatness of that work with the first in a series of reissues coming in 2023. These tunes were originally put out back on the legendary Klang Elektronik in 2000. First up is 'Tea Party' by Eon, M-Core, and Baby Ford, an ice-cold rolling dub. 'On The Floor' with Mark Broom gets more percussive and then comes a solo cut from Baby Ford, 'The Healing' which is as heady as can be and finally 'Word For Word' featuring Cheru Amadi layers up slithers of silvery percussion and cuddly bass into dubbed-out tech heaven.

Review: The unstoppable Steve O'Sullivan brings more of his irresistible dub techno goodness to this heavyweight 12" for Taste Not Waste. By now you will be familiar with the sort of sound Steve deals in but somehow it never seems to get old. This one kicks off with a tight and tech-infused roller with clipped kicks and playful chords that bring feel-good vibes. 'Awakening' then has pinging kicks and vamping chords to enliven any floor and last of all is 'The Feels'. It's another perfectly executed club cut with oodles of warm bass and super smooth grooves.

Review: German beat maker Fabe has emerged over recent years as one of tech house's most skilled groove smiths. His drums and bass are always seductive no matter their style. Here he links up with Burnski aka Instinct's Constant Sound label for four more irresistible nuggets. 'The Greater Good' is super quick as it glides over rippling bass with silky chords, then 'Newbie Bounce' has a more weighty groove. There is elastic funk and US swing in the shuffling goodness of 'Flow Groover' then 'On Edge' closes out with bulky deep house beats and late-night synth work of the highest order.

Review: The intriguingly named Perfumed Freedom makes its debut here with a seductive new minimal EP from Foehn & Jerome. The Frisbee of No Return is the sort of well-designed outing that lovers of those intimate yet zoned out 4 am moments will love: opener 'T-Dive' layers up synths that convey an unsettling sense of mystery and malevolent energy over flappy drums. 'Happy M'June' pumps the drums a bit harder while wonky synth details unfurl up top and last of all is the most raw of the lot - 'New Soul Interruption' has rasping bass and more cluttered arrangements.

This EP features four heady and hypnotic cuts; the ethereal and mesmerising rolling drama created on both tunes on the A side are the perfect soundtrack to an open-air sunrise set, while over on the flip you have a couple of lean, subtle and moody microhouse grooves that head inside for the continuing afterparty. Review: Two unreleased tracks by Englishman Richard Davis on his Repeat imprint. On the A side, you've got the sensual, late night mood music of "Make Me" delivered in his idiosyncratic style that's been heard on imprints such as 240 Volts, Moodmusic and Noir over the years. Over on the flip, there's the deep, afterhours-minded dub of 'Missing Time' which sounds like it could possibly be from the early noughties with its minimal sound. Review: John Barera has always brought an extra special musicality to his deep house tunes over the years. This time out he joins forces with Brian Abelson for a six-track excursion that works well beyond the confines of a dancefloor. 'The Prelude' is a gorgeous downbeat cut that sounds like it's been played live with lo-fi drums and funk bass riffs. 'The Arc' is surging and soulful deep techno and 'I Am Free' is a driving cut with jumbled percussion and loose claps under a passionate vocal cry. The magic continues through the electro-tinged breaks of 'Another Night', twisted Balearic bass of 'I Was There' and funky drumming of 'The Return'. Brilliantly varied and tasteful.

Review: Darker Than Wax welcomes back Malik Hendricks for a new EP that was recorded in Brooklyn in 2020 and 2021 by the American-born, Lisbon-based producer. And it marks something of a shift in his musical journey as he moves away from the sample-heavy sound he is known for and towards more organic grooves with hints of Midwest funk and techno. There is an electro flavour to the opener, sleazy ghetto house flourish to 'Fiyahverkx' and broken beat minimalism to 'Totem.' On the flip comes 'The Money Dance' which is the best of the lot - a soul-drenched and elastic house jam with quality chords and keys.

On their inspirations, the pair say they range from "day to day activity, from 80's pop rock music and good movies to tv shows and live sets from artists that we admire." Review: Toureua's 'Telecommande' (which is French for remote control) is a perfectly uplifting tune that layers in smart trance elements over sleek drums. On the Martin Matiske interpretation, the melodies call to mind the perfect early work of Kraftwerk and the textured bass has hints of 80s magic. All in all, it is smooth and serene and perfect for lift-off whether in high summer or the darkest winter. The original is a little more doleful but no less emotive and then a Felix Bernhardt remix gets heavy and Vicky Montefusco opts for an eerie late-night vibe.

Orchid, isolated in a psychedelic-deprived nation, yearns for the cultural fusion of sex, power, love, and sweetness found in Spanish-speaking music scenes. Techno Valencia beckons listeners to immerse themselves in a nostalgic journey, evoking the soulful resonance of a bygone musical era. Through exploration of archival sounds, Orchid resurrects the essence of pure musical expression, inviting a return to a time when music was deeply felt-a testament to passion and fun in an age of commercialisation.

On Taste The Bass, the duo step up their songwriting skills with added vocals and stay true 'to their heady primal sophistication' across four tracks. 'Palantir' opens with fathoms-deep dub and ice-cold synths that snake their way over the face of the track, while 'Hyperdrive' has rumbling chords and smeared pads that keep you on the ocean floor and 'Dub Conjurer' allows in a little more light from the surface with delicate shards piercing the murk. 'Tales From The Outer Rim' shuts down with a nice gentle rhythm that undulates beneath rippling pad work and works well as perfect early evening warm up.

Review: Romanian label Lok has described Nu Zau's first appearance on the imprint as a "cutting edge masterpiece". While that may be a touch on the hyperbolic side, it's true that the Bucharest-based producer has delivered a fine three-tracker in his distinctive "Ro-minimal" style. A-side 'Synthetic', a typically off-kilter slab of trippy minimal house marked out by surprisingly funky clavinet sounds, mind-mangling vocal snippets, locked-in drums and impeccable sound design, is our pick of the bunch. Elsewhere, 'Traumatised' sees Nu Zau make great use of mangled, warehouse-ready rave riffs, raw acid lines and crunchy drums, while 'Get Out' is deep and dubby in tone, with bursts of jazz fills, rubbery bass and woozy chords.

After a notable first outing, he is quickly back with another of his supple and subtle minimal workouts. 'Synchronicity' is a brilliantly warm and bubbly opener with balmy pads and sci-fi signifiers, while 'Awakenings' picks up the pace for a more driving and late-night tech house vibe that oozes drum funk. 'Synchronicity' then comes as a Nu Zau remix with more chattery percussion and textured bass rumbles, and Sepp's remix of 'Awakenings' is deep, bumping minimal house. A super fresh EP once more.

Review: After having two of his earlier tunes remodelled by Carl Craig and Mike Huckaby thanks to Sushitech, Detroit's Delano Smith re-emerges on the label with a double pack of tunes made with Brawther under the D&B Productions. That moniker has more to do with the pair's name rather than a suddenly conversion to drum & bass, although there's a love of dubby effects and deep bass power here that - at a stretch - could be said to be in common. The six tracks - Symbiosis' 1-6 - are smooth and simple, but executed with an ear (or four) for an irresistible groove, an economic but rhythmic keyboard stab and a knack for squeezing something nicely soulful from the barest ingredients. Nice work indeed.

The Denver-based producer was most active in the early noughties, with some now highly sought after releases on seminal imprints such as Los Angeles' Guidance Recordings and Straylight, as well as San Francisco's Lo-Rise Recordings. Several years back, Paris-based Rue De Plaisance began to reissue some of Cavander's work for a new generation of diggers. Absolutely perfect tackle for the afterhours, with a remix on the flip by Berlin-based Snad.

Review: Kiasmos are a Reykjavik based duo comprised of BAFTA awarded composer Olafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen from the band Bloodgroup. The sounds of classical music and electro-pop collide fantastically on this release. First track "Drawn" is a sublime and emotional serving of trip-hop with Arnald's signature piano style floating on top of Rasmussen's immaculately programmed beats. And then that lush string section comes drifting in, its magnificent! "Gaunt" features some mutant pan pipes accompanied by a bleepy melody and sub-bass pulsations, but once again balanced out by Arnalds' lush piano and strings arrangements. On the flip "Swept" is a dreamy and melancholic deep house cut that could have come out on Kompakt, it's that good. There's even a remix of it by men of the moment Tale Of Us, who revise the track into one of their signature dark and adrenalised journey tracks, it's well done!

Review: The impeccable Lithuanian label Greyscale is a real leader when it comes to dub techno and already they are racing into 2024 in fine style with a first full-length of the year from label head Grad_U! The sublime and immersive Sustain has eight larges ambient soundscapes that are detailed with field recordings from another planet. Each one is alluringly empty and beautiful, intriguing and unsettling to make for an escapist trip to another dimension. The way the producer manages to conjure up what feel like familiar emotions in such a faraway world is second to none and will leave you wanting to do it all over again the second it ends.

There's A Devil Inside Me (7:58)
Review: Basel, Switzerland-based Sanguina returns with its fourth vinyl release here in the Unknown Series. On side A, you have the deep and dubby ethereal roller 'Our Church Is The Tent' that's perfect for sunrise euphoria on the dancefloor, while the pop-inflected microhouse edit 'Back To Life' features samples from well-known R'n'B hits to tremendous effect. Over on the flip, the moody and tripped-out Rominimal style groove of 'There's A Devil Inside Me' is absolutely perfect tackle for getting weird at the afterhours. Tip!

Review: The more discerning and concentrated electro head will be tuned into the work of Bot1500. It is an alias of Shinichi Kobayashi, a producer who since 2018 has landed on the likes of Analogical Force and Furthur Electronix with a unique mix of futurist sounds. This one is another brilliant EP featuring cuts like 'Chartreuse 8.' It's a propulsive rhythm built from silky breaks and overlaid with the sort of heart-aching and thought-provoking chords that will send you inward on the dance floor. The five other cuts are just as much a perfect mix of the physical and the cerebral.

Sunshine (7:31)
Running (5:36)
Before (7:15)
Searching (7:05)
Review: Four new tracks from EB Flow mark the latest release from the ever prolific Constant Sound label, as ever providing solid and dependable dancefloor gear that boasts a myriad of different flavours. 'Sunshine' wastes no time setting up a strutting, Van Helden-esque groove and lets it roll, adding a few vaguely nostalgic samples on top. 'Running' has more of a breaks feel, harking back to the days of rave's roots when breaks and acid could sit together naturally rather than in different genre pigeonholes. 'Before' is the most minimal of the four, peppered with frisky garage snares and a subtle but ultimately devastating filter breakdown, while a feelgood gospel-style vocal gives the closer, 'Searching', a lovely optimistic tint. Constant Sound continue to deliver.

Review: Minimal electronic house tour de force here as Border Com's James Holden teams up with the UK's Jon Tye (aka Milky Globe) here on the A-side, while on the flip Nathan Fake and Milky Globe join forces for the Dusty Cabinets mix of "Lava Flow". The "Sun Spots" cut is a deep slice of electronic dub combining Holden's ever-shifting palette of abstract tones and crisp percussion. "Lava Flow" takes Nathan Fake's signature keyboard work and stretches it out over a sweet low-end groove.

Good Morning Ninety Free (6:02)
Review: Fuse off-shoot Locus is driving itself as vital as its parent label so far. And the 15th outing is another doozy from Casey Spillman. Drawing on spaced out house, breaks and electro as well as the underlying tech house that is this label's staple, he cooks up a fine new sound. 'Get Upper' is driving and punchy but with style and soul, then 'I Know' gets a little more unhinged with garage percussion and farting bass that will sound killer on a big system. There is a clean and serene melodic edge to 'Summer Dreaming' and its breezy groove, then 'Good Morning Ninety Free' rounds out with the best sound of the lot - a balmy, jazz tinged US house sound for the earliest hours in the morning.

Afters (5:22)
Review: Despite presumably being insanely busy A&Ring for all his many labels, which put out music at a high rate of release, Burnski does also still find time to make his own music. And it's top tackle too, whatever he tries, from garage to ambient. To kick off with here the Northern rock cooks up a super breezy and Balearic-tinged house tune that you can imagine playing at some vibey Ibiza sunset party. That's probably why he called it 'Summer 23' to be honest. On the flip, 'Afters' gets more chunky and tribal, with tight and pinging drums and that sort of wide-eyed, tongues-out energy that gets the freaks going.

Review: Paranoid London are named as such for a reason: the English megacity really does instill a low-level sense of paranoia and dread. So why the hell not lighten up now and again? That's just what this dubious duo have gone and done with 'Suck A Dick'; replacing their usual EP-cover representation of Big Ben with a giant phallus, Paranoid London have successfully drawn an astute analogy between masculine dominance and the totalitarian dominance of the state. Featuring the unmistakable vocals of regular collaborator Mutado Pintado, it's a guaranteed floor-filler, unusually humorous for the pair's austere, distorted repertoire.

Night Drive (10:07)
Review: Vade Mecum welcomes Soft Traffic for a debut release here and it is one that suggests the producer has a soft spot for the warm, deep and heady end of the dubbed out techno spectrum. Those are certainly all the words you would use to describe the quiet brilliance of opener 'Find Ya' (feat Prince Morella) which is icy cool and hypnotic. On the flipside, 'Night Drive' is another sublimely soft focus and supple techno roller with infinite horizons and milky pads that dissolve your soul. A superb debut.

Review: Few labels do minimal as well as Trelik and in terms of artists, Edwards is also as good as they come right now. This perfect pairing opens up with the deeply alluring 'Time' with its woozy pads and smeared chords over warm and rubbery drums. It's a hypnagogic affair then 'Vacuum Tube' has a more menacing air thanks to the wispy and unsettling synth details and clunky hooks. 'Watch Out' brings a more spangled and rubbery rhythm that has colourful details peeling off the beats and last of all, 'Stream' ups the ante with some thudding deep house and widescreen ambient synth work.

Review: Norm Talley returns to his Upstairs Asylum label alongside fellow US house pioneer Delano Smith for Straight Up No Chaser, an eight-track opus featuring four solo cuts each. Talley's gritty, dubbed-out, low-rolling house style is present and correct throughout with the loopy chords of 'Blak Bottom' getting things going, 'The Flip' getting more cavernous and aqueous and 'ISO Vision' leaning into dub techno. 'Believe It' is a soulful deep house looper, while Smith gets bubbly with 'The Bassline', lays down thumping kicks on 'Travels 23' and his trademark synth smears on 'The Drive' while 'Remembrance' is a heady dub house cut that locks you into a state of perfect hypnosis.

Clair De Lune (4:41)
Review: Double Touch make their return to German label, All Day I Dream, with their four-track EP, 'Storm'. Like soaking into an ambrosial dream, Reigan's beautiful vocals, reminiscent on 90s trip hop, drift effortlessly through the emotive core of the titular track, 'Storm'. For 'Serenity', a cherubic, cascading melody twirls gracefully around the driving, percussive spine of the track - replete with a sense of endlessness, this track is like looking into a distant horizon. 'So Free', the second track to feature Reigan's ethereal vocals, rides a rousing orchestral wave, precisely punctuated at points by soft garage-esque rhythms. And as the release draws to a close, a deep house reimagining of the classical piano piece, 'Clair De Lune', is a lesson in combining two supposedly disparate musical spheres. A fantastic release, perfect for roof-down listening or ecstatic dancefloors alike.

Review: ** Repress of the reIssue ** Ooh if there's ever a deep house history lesson wrapped up in a 12" then it's this reissued Stomp The Beat EP from Gherkin Jerks aka the master Larry Heard. The Gherkin Jerks project originally surfaced back in 1988 with this 12" on the Chicago based Gherkin Records label, released anonymously at the request of Heard himself who viewed the Gherkin Jerks material as a creative experiment. Later revealed as the work of Larry Heard, original copies of Stomp The Beat rack up a pretty penny on Discogs so it's good work all round that the producer's Alleviated Records label has teamed up with Clone to release a digitally enhanced version. From the mind bending stereo panning of opening track "Don't Dis The Beat" it's easy to see why the Gherkin Jerks material has been so widely praised - Jamal Moss is a big fan - whilst the general off-key melodics and tough 909 arrangements of what follows still sound futuristic some 15 years on.

Review: Caserta is legendary digger Kon's long time engineer, and he sure does have a wealth of tricks up his own sleeve. Here he gets to tackle his own super 7" on the Bridge Boots label and first off he serve sup a lovely take on a Stevie Wonder tune. 'Stevie?' (Caserta Sunday Saint mix) has mid-tempo grooves rolling away nicely beneath exquisite synth work and a well-treated vocal from the man himself. JoDaCe steps up on the flip for a Saturday Sinner mix that is more driving and ready for the club. The bass is rugged, the vocals more looped and freaky, the effect just as brilliant but in different ways.

Review: Romanians Drago Ilici and Prichindel's Tonomat Records welcome boss man Ilici in his Dilly Bombastik guise for a new EP packed with power across three fresh cuts and one remix from DJ Normal 4. 'Reflo' kicks off with the sort of crunchy drums and breaks that you don't hear all too often out of the more minimal minded Romanians. It's awash with some cosmic melody that brings the vibes then 'Workout' is a party pumper with slinky drum loops and molten synth patterns raining down from above. 'Stelu Gamanu' gets all dark and paranoid with a more edgy breakbeat foundation and DJ Normal 4's Melange mixX is all 90s video game synths and melted neon synths. Great stuff.

Review: Marseille-based DJ Jo SZT is from the Atipik Crew and now he steps out to launch his own new imprint Komplices. It kicks off with this first EP from his mate Atree over in Berlin and is a perfectly twisted mix of tech, minimal and acid. 'Outflow' begins with low-slung creeper and warped bass, then 'Sensible Counting Acab' spins out on a more lithe cosmic tip and 'Press Start' gets back to ragged synths, snappy hits and serrated basslines. 'Relaxane' shuts down with a nice mechanical rhythm and seductive vocal whispers.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Margaret Dygas may be based in Berlin but her unique sound can't be tied down to any one city or scene, as she proves on her latest 12" across three tracks for the consistently exciting Half Baked label. Not that there's anything half done here, of course, with A-side tune 'Butterfly Effect' a prime slice of groovy. resonant techno that's understated and restrained enough to gain comparisons to Jaydee's 'Plastic Dreams' classic. 'CC Is 33' is warmer, with nicely slidy, jazzy organ chords and itchy technofunk rhythms, with the most minimal of the three tracks, the static-infused, atmospheric 'Subliminal 20A7', coming last but by no means least. A great showcase for a great, original talent.
