Review: Elevated Senses is the new series from the prolific Berlin-based producer Todo Kunst aka Zug (aka Gruvaldo among many others), this time exploring such concepts with the third eye, premonitions, telepathy and other arcane subjects. On the A-side you've got the deep groove of 'Tercer Ojo' followed by the late night affair of 'Premonition' - both on a housey tip. Over on the flip is the subtle computer funk 'Telepatia' and finally 'Seres De Luz' is a contemplative IDM affair that's perfect for drifting beyond the afterhours.

Review: Zon Records has released music digitally before, though this is the first time the wilfully eclectic Belgian label - and the producers behind the label, also called Zon - has made it onto wax. As vinyl debuts go, it's pretty good. They set their stall out with title track 'Keys For Days', a warming and sun-splashed slab of tech-tinged deep house peppered with warming chords, jazzy synth-bass and subtle TB-303 motifs, before diving into deeper, more immersive territory on the gorgeous, sunrise-ready 'Spring Break' (featuring vocalisations from Lotte Sarembe). Over on the reverse, 'Upon Us' is an analogue-rich chunk of deep tech-house, while Ukrainian producer Kirik's remix of the same track is a far more bass-heavy, tactile and otherworldly affair.

Review: Sahau inaugurates new Romanian imprint Zimbru with, you guessed it; some sublime and hypnotic minimalism. "NJ Breaks" is dreamy deep house with said break riding on top of a rolling groove and tripped out pads for afterhour delights. On the flip is "Montreal" , indebted to early noughties minimal of such imprints as Perlon or m_nus with its high pitched tom drums and high hat shuffle working alongside stuttering, glitchy melodies.

Review: Romanian legend Dan Andrei teams up with Serban Goanta (the co-owner of Understand) as AK41 and they inaugurate new imprint Zimbru for some highgrade reductionist grooves here. "Triathlon" is the kind of quirky minimal funk that guys like Isolee and Losoul used to put out back in the day. "Cuttin' Ice" is deep, dubby and bumpy like early Perlon while "Cox Terrier" is probably the most abstract offering with the mandatory rolling bass and jagged rhythmicity balanced by some paranoid soundscapes for maximum effect at the afterhours.

Review: Gys with the latest offering from the Zero G Sounds label. "Lon" sees Gys serving up some stellar dubbed out tech-house, much in the vain of Maurizio et al, with a wickedly dubbed bassline and shuffling techy beats to the fore. Soultek go for a deep, late night techno take, with a rich bassline joined by bubbling synths, tight beats, and drifting effects. On the reverse, Polycubist plays up the dubby elements of the original perfectly, giving it a little more drive alongside great delays. Smartypants round things out with a raw, stripped down version, with no dubs in sight on this stark, minimal rework.

Crosstown
Review: A very special release here from legendary rave producer Eon, aka Ian Loveday. Loveday, who passed away in 2009, was known and loved for his enduring impact on UK dance culture, although sadly this was the one and only release on his Zarnak Records imprint (although Loveday himself released 12"s on a host of labels including PAL SL, Vinyl Solution and Plus 8). Upon release the Papal Magnet 12" sold out swiftly and soon became a highly sought after record - this batch was found recently and has been passed onto us with the blessing of Loveday's family. On the A Side you'll find the relentless late night throb of "Cable Rider" - 90s techno at its finest. Flip over for the moody introspection of "Passing Clouds" and raw, dusty analogue thump of "Crosstown" - our pick of the bunch. An excellent release.

As I Left College (7:16)
Don't Fight The Feeling (6:51)
No Wait (7:15)
Review: Paris' Yoyaku imprint serves up yet another edition in its YYY series, courtesy of anonymous artists or alter egos of established ones on the minimal house scene. This is actually the second part in the limited sublabel series, which was inaugurated last year by Difid aka Dakpa from Palma de la Mallorca. Bumpy and looped up house on the hypnotic afterhours tip is the order of the day on "As I Left College" and reminiscent of Derrick Carter's work as Sound Patrol back in the day. The reduced mini-funk of "Don't Fight The Feeling" is perfect after hours fare that will go down a treat on dancefloors as far as Berlin and Bucharest, while "No Wait" (on the flip) goes deeper down the rabbit hole, taking in some even trippier and hypnotic elements than heard heard even earlier.

Review: Mysteries and rumours still shroud Yoyaku and the identities behind its YYY series. This time we are given a name: Vincen, whose only available details are that he works in the Yoyaku studio. You can tell, too... The second the liquid analogue tones drip and melt over the thundering robust kicks and those sinewy atmospheres whisper into the mix, there's a sense of class and weight that can come from no amateur. The same can be said for the more forthright acid house homage "Fune". Loopy and rolling like DJ Pierre at his prime, this could crumble bare warehouse walls within bars. Long may this mystery continue.

Track 2 (8:52)
Review: While we know the identities of those behind the hyped YYY series - Parisian record store, DJ agency and recording studio Yoyaku - they're still keeping tight-lipped about the identities of the producers behind their well-regarded releases. This latest missive - the fourth in the series to date - is also shrouded in mystery. This much we know: it contains two versions of the same untitled track. The A-side is crisp and sharp, with an increasingly ragged acid bassline, slowly emerging chord progressions and clanking drum machine hits combining. It feels a little like a techno head's take on analogue deep house, if that makes sense. The flipside version moves further towards straight-up techno territory, with ghostly pads seemingly floating above a denser, chunkier rhythm track.

Review: There's been plenty of hype surrounding the YYY Series since it launched earlier this year. So far, information has been limited. We know that the mysterious label is associated with the Paris-based Yoyaku agency and record shop, but not the identities of the producers behind the releases. Still, as long as the quality remains high, few DJs will care. "398A" is a chunky, floor-filling affair, with woozy, Detroit style synth motifs joining forces with a bustling, pleasingly percussive groove. It's not quite deep house, tech-house or techno, but rather something in between. Arguably even better is flipside "398B", whose combination of fluttering synthesizer riffs and two-step influenced deep house beats is both beautiful and floor-friendly.

Review: Markus Herbert is having a busy 2021. This is his third EP of the year, and the third EP to come exclusively on YYK no label, which is a daughter to the yoyaku imprint. It is another timeless fusion of spaced-out beats, prime 90s tech house and subtle minimalism that is designed for heady DJ sets. 'IV Anbus' is quick and slick, with its bouncing kicks and crunchy hits, then 'Balut' is a much more intriguing atmosphere with spiraling ambient pads and a more skeletal rhythm sinking you into a late-night headspace. 'Alpha Corvus' closes with a clatter of DIY percussive sounds, pixelated chord stabs and a sense of cyborg funk that you will not be able to resist.

Review: YYK no label is a sub label of yoyaku that has been turning out left of centre electronic sounds for the last four years. Pochtrone is a mysterious new artists who has taken care of three consecutive releases on the label all in quick succession. He draws on minimal, techno and tech house for his inspiration but comes up with something that sounds like none of them. Opener 'Pantin' is a tense and involving affair that has hurried bass which seems to almost fall over itself while alien effects and vocals fight to cut free from the tight groove. On the flip is the epic 10-minute-plus 'Tingle,' with its bulbous bass and skittish percussion constantly on the move, trying your mind in knots and keeping your feet busy.

He drops a steam stream of music and most of it sells out in quick time. For his latest outing he heads to Yung Dumb out of Canada and cooks up more twisted takes on house and techno. There are acid gurglings underpinning the opener then a Fred Everything remix strips things back to dubby drums and rubbery 303s. Things get melodic and reflective on 'Mellow' and then 'No More' is a gorgeous synth piece that is full of heartache and forlornness.

The Good Ones Go
The Good Ones Go (Craig Richards remix)
Review: The Yume Records label emerged last year wedged between the borderland of house, techno and experimental electronic music and scored a fine debut release in And Again from London via Berlin producer neinzer. Evidently feeling that you make more of an impression by releasing less, it's only now that Yume resurface with a second release and it's from another lesser known quantity in Voigtmann. The Interludes Archives suggests whoever is responsible for A&R at Yume has a finely cultivated ear for such things as it's full of easy-stepping after-party vibes with the odd inclusion of jazzy pianos and drunken acoustic basslines. (Great for those who loved Wolf & Lamb but are now after something with a little more 'less is more'). The real gem on here however is the rolling, techno-heavy and bassline-lead remix Fabric staple Craig Richards turns in which is reason enough to own this record.

Florian Busse - "Bodhran" (8:24)
Review: The Younion imprint clearly has big ambitions for 2017, both in terms of musical calibre and artistic selection. Their second instalment drops on vinyl format with a pretty raucous line-up that includes tech-house legends Tiefschwarz, alongside Re.You and Florian Busse. Tiefschwarz appear next to the young talent of Ruede Hegelstein on the wondrous "Jetlag", a powerful, charging bit of techno that's driven forwards by a distinctive house swing. Re.You's "In My Arms" features David Ennio Minor, and it's the sort of dark, brooding, tech-minded house that flows to an excellent tribal motion, whereas Busse's "Bodhran" is clearly more concerned with the beat-swing of traditional tech-house for the peak hours. HOT.

Starting off, Hivern Discs boss John Talabot gets on board with his "Loud Synths Reconstruction" which definitely lives up to its name on this driving proggy take on the track. Ed Russell aka West Country bass techno auteur Tessela steps up and delivers a typically thumping and funked up rendition which is a real highlight on here. In the last few years he has become a bill topping DJ and chart topping producer with a wide range but also a keen eye for destructive dance floor sounds. His time out he lands on the cultured You & Me label with some turbocharged, spaced out house sounds that hark back to the classic vide game soundtrack era of the 90s. The bassline on opener 'Energy' is bulbous and soft edged beneath silky drum work. 'Feel It' is another cosmically minded bit of punchy electronic house funk with none chords and grinding bass, 'Orgonaught' then gets more wild with some flashy lasers and 'Record Is Over' sinks into a more deep, pensive and late night vibe.

Review: The seventh release of Sasaki Hiroaki's Yotsume-Music sees Hisashi Ito aka Hulot (Raum...musik, BELOW, FROGMAN/U.S.B.) welcomed to the fray, quite possible, given the EP's title, taking influences from Mr Hulot, the hero of Jacques Tati classic film 1953 'Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot'. Like said hero, there's a kooky, loveable eccentricity to his two productions - he counts Herbert and Moritz von Oswald among his main influences - with Tom Ellis Remix and Sasaki Hiroaki Remix adding a remix, one on either each side.

Review: Just when you think you've heard the last of Covid in music, along comes this Covid 2020 EP from Yotsume Music label head Saki Hiroaki, indicating that it was written during those most weird and dark times, specifically in the city of Kurashiki. 'I Say' (part 2) is a seriously silky deep house with wispy and liquid chords rippling out to an infinite horizon as the persuasive drums get you into the groove. 'Improvisation' is a more crisp tech cut but is still unhurried and detailed with nice deft synth curlicues and the trio of escapist gems is completed with 'TRAP'. This one again sinks you into a pillowy and gentle groove with muted chords drifting up top like clouds.

Review: "Dubb Me Some'tin Fresh" first appeared on wax way back in 2001, as part of Halo, Hipp-E and Tony's first outing for YoshiToshi under the 6400 Crew alias. It remains one of their strongest cuts; a dark, sweaty and trippy fusion of tribal drums, acid bass and dub-house sensibilities. This reissue contains the freshly re-mastered original version, plus a trio of tasty new reworks. Deep Dish man Sharam steps up first, emphasizing the dub-influenced elements on a big room version that strips back the original's dense tribal drums without sacrificing any energy. In contrast, Sinisa Tamamovic's remix is loose and more tribal-minded, while Hector opts for more acid lines and heavier sub-bass on his big room-friendly interpretation.

Shadow City (Dhavari mix)
Mumbai Dweller
Review: Yore label boss Andy Vaz returns with his imprint's 21st release, "Shadow City." This three tracker takes on the deep, soulful music that lies somewhere between house and techno that he and his label have become renowned for.

Yore was set up by Vaz in March 2007. He wanted to focus on the 'days of yore' and re-create the authentic old school sounds of House and Techno. Distancing itself from the trendier, often indistinctive minimal hype, Yore aims to bring back the depth and soul that dance music has been so desperate for. The label places a strong emphasis on material from some of the finest old school producers, such as Todd Sines, Rick Wade, Terrence Dixon and others.

It is with this sentiment then that on "Shadow City" Vaz has dropped three deep, percussive and hypnotic house tracks with strong influences from the Motor City. "The "Y" Theme" opens the release with a deep, funky and percussive number. The track pulsates and grows, edging ever nearing to its acid finale. A trippy vocal ignites the track, adding intensity which only builds and escalates as Vaz begins to plunge even deeper. Deep inside the hypnotic groove we then come face to face with the aforementioned old school finale.

On the flip "Shadow City" begins in much deeper territory but again ascends into a dizzying and furocious house attack. Its progressive vibe would make it a useful weapon for dancefloors the world over. "Mumbai Dweller" takes things even deeper. All about the low end, a throbbing bassline lies beneath an almost tribal-like house groove. Some dark chords intensify the atmosphere, finishing the package on a darker tone.

Put simply, this is exactly the sort of raw house music from the days of yore, brought to today's dancefloors by Andy Vaz and his team at Yore.

Dixon's uncompromising sound is heard in full effect on "Train Of Thought". The results are pleasingly effective and quietly impressive, from the smooth, spacey and shuffling warmth of ear-pleasing opener 'It's About Time', to the even sunnier, garage-influenced twinkle of afternoon-hot closing cut 'Don't Walk Away', where high register synth solos and billowing chords wrap their way around a bouncy and dreamy groove. Elsewhere, 'Nobody is Perfect' offers a sunrise-ready blend of chunky tech-house grooves, squelchy synth bass and deep space pads, while 'What Life's All About' is a huggable slice of wide-eyed deep house bliss.

Volume 7 features a very diverse cross section of the Playgroup sound, starting out with the low slung minimal house of "Things Change" and the techy/funky retro groove of "MX Jam" we get into some real interesting stuff on the flip. "Hey Hey" is equally dancefloor oriented but with a somewhat soulful flavour that you could imagine a Detroit DJ playing while "Don't Know" is definitely more reminiscent of classic Playgroup with its nu-soul/disco/funk vibes properly intact.

Like This... (4:07)
Review: As we cross the midway point of the nine part Previously Unreleased series from Playgroup it is becoming clear Trevor Jackson's archive of work under the name is high-grade quality and seemingly bottomless. Up top, "Get Down" is a serious sidewinder that feels like Jackson is pulling from techno, electro and the Metal Dance of Liasions Dangereuses et al. What a bassline! On the B-side, "Strange Daze" provides a softer, loungey kind of Balearic house vibe, whilst "Like This..." could be feasibly be seen as a studio offcut from the same sessions that brought us Playgroup classic "Number One." Here Jackson throws down a rather satisfying, funk-added slap bass line augmented by a slower yet full-bodied groove and some uncredited vocal grit. Excellent, like the rest of the series.

Review: "Neo Trance" is the new sound of minimal, melancholic trance, and seems to be influenced by so many styles that it's sometimes difficult to put a name to it. We have taken a long time to come up with this track list, which we believe is second to none. German acts such as Extrawelt, Steve Bug and Trentemoller are the top names within this genre, and these producers are represented here, as well as scene defining labels such as Border Community, 3Beat, Cocoon, and Connaisseur Records.

Horizot (8:20)

D&E (6:24)
Review: By now, Tommy Jr Vicari has accumulated an impressive number of releases on his catalogue, and we were taken aback when seeing that his first EP dates back to 2004, the days when house was turning into minimal, but also when the true house heads were still active and punishing dance floors with their love. In this vein, you could say that "Horizot" is a true house tune, through and through, and Vicari's heavy beats are mashed up with a hip hop sensibility, and some funky melodies. "Mic Ang" is bumpier, more playful, and breaks its groove down into a stop-start motion, while "D&E" goes deeper, lower and strips everything down to a placid mood.

Review: Alex Piccone has been steadily releasing some quality minimal house since the late noughties for acclaimed imprints such as Cadenza, Bass Culture and Bosconi. For new imprint Yay he serves up the Frequency Switch EP which four cuts of reduced analogue house like on opening track "M9" emotive and jacking but covered in the right amount of dust and so emotive! "M8" is more uptempo and uplifting with its blip melody and hypnotising chords doing most of the work against a minimal backdrop. Finally on the flip "M6C" is the kind of rusted and decayed electro that Frenchman TC80 is pushing too at the moment and the kind of thing you might hear Oner Ozer or Binh playing out; it's very cool!

Gonna Do & Do It More Now (Titonton Duvante FLiP) (6:27)
Review: Acapulco Heat is a new duo from Acapulco made up of Felipe Valenzuela and new comer Ossios. They share a love of colourful shirts and making "sensual moves in the shade of palm trees" and here offer up a set of cuts designed to encourage dancefloor mindfulness. 'Intellectuelle' is a crispy tech house groove with thudding kicks and enough detail to keep the mind as locked as the heels. 'Gonna Do & Do It More Now' is a highlight on the flip - a trippy synth line buzzes about over flappy drum programming that suspends you in the groove. The one and only Titonton Duvante offers a remix that has a darker heart.

OddMann - "Spazziale" (5:44)
Review: The Yama Music label is slowly but surely building a fantastic discography. It has taken five years to get to release number six, but each one has always been worth the wait. This Various Artists collection sees the crew expand its roster with the likes of London's Frazer Campbell bringing his perfectly reduced and rolling dub techno sounds to 'How Hard Can It Be.' OddMann's 'Spazziale' is another dub heavy joint, but one with a slower tempo that encourages you to sink in deep and enjoy zoning out. Elsewhere, 'Osc2' is all about a brilliantly bulbous bassline that never stops evolving, and the Yama Music crew offer a rock solid, jacked up house cut full of muscularity.

Review: Kerowack's "Naf Monk" found it's way into the hands of Tommie Sunshine and he instantly declared it the first single for the European launch of his label. With their influences worn proudly and unashamedly on their sleeves, Dan & Saul march proudly into sonic battle, putting lesser men to shame and showing us all how to time-travel through multiple moments and styles in a slight 6 minutes. This track is for the music lovers, the ones who appreciate rich textures as well as the kids who just want to get loaded and get their swerve on in the club. There is something in this track that will grab everyone and, after playing it to so many people, it seems that everyone has a favourite moment or sound in this track. Kerowack first found Tommie at the Winter Music Conference a few years back, became friends and knew then they would work together in some way. This is the product of that friendship. Their tracks and sounds unmistakable, their live show undeniable; make way for New York City by way of San Francisco's force to be reckoned with.

Review: UK bass-heavy deep tech? Outsider rave? Call it what you want, but XL's mission to reconnect with the UK underground is certainly putting in an effort, if recent releases by Zomby, Special Request and Powell are anything to go by. This time they tap Berlin's rising star Hugo Massien. First track "Kontrol" is main room house for mega raves with its massive, razor sharp bassline and repeated refrain of 'mind control!" certain to fuel dancefloor euphoria. "Better Let Her" rewinds back to the early evening, warming things up in nice style on this smooth deep house number. On the flip things fast forward to the peak time on the adrenalised "All Night" featuring 'that' Moodymann sample from RBMA; will it be another Oliver $ moment? Finally "Fahrenheit" is a dark tech house killer reminiscent of early Jamie Jones. The young producer has seemingly emerged out of nowhere, but already on to big things.

Review: The second release on X Files. This waxy, splattered green and black 12' features 'two extremely dangerous peak time recordings that have been causing destruction on dancefloors the world over.' On the A-side, there's some proper heads down tackle in the form of bass-driven minimal cut 'Txxic' which samples a particular pop princess' hit track - guess which one? Over on the flip, the Rominimal vibes continue, well into the afterhours of course, on druggy microhouse cut 'Itta'. Tip!

Prepare to reach a higher state of consciousness on the adrenalised 'Liquid Night', while the trance-infused euphoria continues on the elevating 'Midnight Caller' on side A. Review: A warm welcome back to London-based Dane Jacob Trier Hanson AKA Jacob Husley, who returns to action after a near four year hiatus. He starts in confident fashion via "So Hot", a fine fusion of lo-fi house and tech-house rich in sturdy kick-drum beats, dubbed-out synthesizer motifs, memorable vocal samples and rumbling bass. It comes accompanied by a couple of notable remixes. First, Samuel Andre Madsen provides a "Reshape" that wraps subtle Kalimba style melodies around a sparser - but no less weighty - tech-house groove, before Dubsons re-casts the track as an acid bass-propelled chunk of spacey peak-time house. Husley's ultra-deep and undulating bonus cut "Hush Hush" is also worth a spin.

Helium Robots - "Delve" (Wrong Island Somnambulist remix)
Anbuley - "Kemoo' Yo Keke" (Wrong Island Banishment remix)
Review: What began with a long running Glaswegian club night called Wrong Island has turned into a London-based label of the same name. Launching in impressive fashion with some auspicious analogue fetishism from M O O N (aka Jimmy Murphy's nephew) Wrong Island demonstrate their approach will be a diverse one with a second 12" that features their own remixes of Helium Robots and Ghanaian-Austrian singer, Anbuley. Hypnosis is the central theme here, think back to vintage DFA and those B Sides from the likes of LCD Soundsystem and The Juan Maclean where a groove was tweaked with deadly precision and you're in the right frame of mind for this pair of reworks. Leading the way is a drawn out take in "Delve" by Helium Robots that takes in equal measures of Italo and acid - you can totally see Dan Avery working the Fabric crowd with this one. It's complemented nicely by the Banishment remix of Anbuley's "Kemoo' Yo Keke" which transforms the spiritual original into a humongous slab of arpeggio driven acid. A printed insert suggests there is plenty more of interest to come from Wrong Island.
