Spastick (Dubfire rework)
Panik Attack (Guido Schneider Second Attack remix)
Review: Step forward Dubfire (aka Ali Shirazinia from Grammy winning DJ and production duo Deep Dish) who's already hit top form this summer
with some tasty releases on Desolat, Funkwelle.net and whose thumping 'Emissions' features on the Minus compilation 'EXPANSION
Contraction'. The beauty of this rework is that it doesn't stray far from the original vibe. Dubfire pays the track the full respect it deserves,
adding contemporary beats, bass and hat patterns, subliminal efx and tweaks that perfectly compliment the EQ sweeps and machine gun
snare rolls of the original.
Panikattack (originally released on Plus 8 in 1996 as the B side to Sickness) gets a more radical overhaul with Guido Schneider turning in
a typically pragmatic version. By excavating and enhancing the gritty funk that lies buried under the feverish textures of the original, he
discovers a totally new dimension. Combining the plastik elements with his own trademark swing and razor sharp percussion programming,
Schneider coaxes the track out of the shadows for some serious peak time action as the bassline bounds forward relentlessly occasionally
enveloped by stuttering delays, to negotiate its way through the dubbed out breakdown and on to the end.

Review: Whatever happened to "Baby Kate"? It's a question that's been asked ever since Heartthrob's opening cut on the min2MAX compilation started causing such comprehensive damage to dancefloors. Well, she's grown up pretty quickly after being remixed from here to oblivion by the Minus collective, and the results are truly awesome. There are four cutting edge excursions on offer here and it's testament to the original version that it's inspired such a wide spectrum of interpretations to accompany you through the night.

Groove Catcher (Martin Buttrich Catcher remix)
Groove Catcher (original version)
The Method
Review: Italian producer Marco Carola gives us a peak behind the curtain of his upcoming album Play It Loud! - his first studio long player in almost a decade - with the Groove Catcher EP. Both album cuts, namely "Groove Catcher" and "The Method", are imbued with the subtle instrumentation and inherently funky rhythmic patterns that the Minus stalwart is known for. Adding an extra element of attractiveness to the 12" is the remix of the EP's title track by Poker Flat type Martin Buttrich, who teases out a spooky synth melody and adds some nice touches to the sonic landscape that marks it out as a welcome addendum to the two original cuts on offer.

Review: "Setting Up" is a big slab of menacing techno from Minus mainstay Heartthrob which is contrasted nicely with the warmer hypnotic bass swirls of "Your Body". On the flip "Dancing" and "In My Room" continue to plough the dark, driving sound that has become a hallmark of Minus.

Heartthrob vs Troy Pierce - "House Nation Amended"
Gaiser vs Heartthrob - "Nasty Girl"
Review: Life on the road, with all the intense highs and lows that go with it, can make for an intriguing creative environment. So when a travelling band of Minus artists, including Heartthrob, Troy Pierce and Gaiser - touring and hanging out together during 2006 - started bouncing ideas off of each other and reworking tracks, it became essential to harness this energy in some way. "MVS1" is the first instalment in a series of collectable EPs designed to document these spontaneous, unpredictable and potentially explosive collaborations.

Question Of Time
Review: Marco Carola's fifth album, and his first for Hawtin's Minus imprint, demonstrates his recent progression as a producer. Whereas previous sets were largely filled with hard, eyeball-popping workouts, Play It Loud showcases a deeper, groovier techno sound. It makes for a far more satisfying and entertaining listen, something enhanced by Carola's canny decision to present it as a seamless mix. There's a superb ebb and flow throughout, as bumpin' basslines and sparse riffs nestle side by side with loopy grooves and intricate percussion fills. Rather than the cold and aloof beats of old, Play It Loud is warm, groovy and intensely satisfying.

Review: It's hard to know where to start with this one. Weighing in at a whopping 15 CDs, plus a DVD, 100-page book and some rather lovely packaging, Arkives Reference 1993-2010 is a super-sized Richie Hawtin career retrospective and then some. While only the most ardent Hawtin-watcher would disagree with the assertion that he's gone off the boil in recent years, there's no doubt that the Canadian has made some terrific techno, ambient and electronica in the last two decades. Arkives Reference has it all, from hard-to-find originals and long-forgotten remixes to dancefloor classics, slept-on bangers and, most enticingly, a couple of CDs of unreleased cuts. Techno heads should start salivating - it's really that impressive.

Backroom Melody
Review: Dice Corleone aka Loco Dice with the latest gem from the Minus stable. "Seeing Through Shadows" is a pulsing minimal techno masterpiece, with bubbling keys, a heavy kick, deep techno bass, shuffling techy beats, and great surface noise effects. On the reverse, "Backroom Melody" sounds like a continuation of the A-side cut, with sparse beats, more surface noise, percolating keys, and another rich bassline, but all served up in a more sparse state.

Review: Always working to be one step ahead of the game, the Minus sound just keeps on evolving. As if to emphasize this point, Tractile have come up with a full debut release so exhilarating, so packed full of refreshing takes and ideas that they could have blown the doors off the traditional minimal sound for good. One part sparse, metallic techno, one part Detroit-style electro-funk, they deliver fast-moving, action-packed tunes that hurtle forward on several levels. Over the course of this EP they usher in and out so many wickedly crafted riffs and glitches that it's difficult to keep up. It's the sound of a production partnership at the top of its game, effortlessly shifting from rough angular beats to flowing, floor-friendly grooves at the flick of a switch.

Review: Jon Gaiser cements his growing reputation with another finely crafted selection of tunes, demonstrating a deep understanding of the intimate mechanics required for a minimalist sound sculpture. His ear for a killer groove is again a 'stand out' feature of this release - the myriad drum patterns he packs into each track really driving his productions forward, underpinned by molten, subsonic bass lines. The five tracks on offer never lose sight of the instinctive needs of the dancefloor. Take the title track "Neural Block" for example, with its subtle use of reverse snares, scuttling percussive bleeps and subliminal samples. The exceptional "Half Life" features séance-like voices and bubbling, liquid grooves that swell to the maximum for the toughest workout on the EP.

Review: Just when you thought it was safe to venture back on to the dancefloor, that strange guy with the sunken eyes and scary voice is up to his old tricks again! Cleverly combining black humour with reduced micro-grooves, the title track from Ambivalent's "R U OK?" EP has become one of the most memorable tunes of the year to date, with the bonus acappella version coming in particularly handy during the messier parts of an evening. It's only right then, that it reappears remixed and revamped for a fresh onslaught over the summer season. This is an amazing Minus release.

Lost City
Review: ** TALE OF US REPRESS ** Richie Hawtin's label has long been associated with the minimal sound, but this release frees itself from that sound. The title track is stripped back, but it serves up a new take on classic electro thanks to its shuffling 808s and woozy, reflective synths. Tale of Us returns to a more conventional approach on "Discochord" but they still avoid hiccupping mnml sounds and the squelchy acid line is accompanied by atmospheric synths. Finally, "Lost City" is more grimy and nocturnal, but again the menacing 808s and reflective synths make it sound a million miles away from the label's trademark sound.

Review: "As others subdivide and categorize we bring things back together, opening things up more freely and allow a closer connection to the music that I love and the sounds and textures that many of my DJ sets journey through" That's how M_nus boss Ritchie Hawtin describes the ethos behind MinMAX, a new label compilation that draws together material from artists on the main label and offshoot PLUS 8 and offers plenty of minimal and maximal techno thrills - hence the title. This triple vinyl edition of MinMAX features a mixture of new and exclusive material from Mathew Jonson, Julien Jewel and Tripmasters along with more familiar tracks that feature on the more expansive CD and digital editions.

Loose Hooks
Review: Loco Dice surely needs no introduction; the Desolat label owner is globally known for his dubby, tribalistic records on imprints such as Cadenza, Cocoon, Ovum and more alongside an extensive gig schedule that sees him play around the world and back continuously. No newbie to Minus either, it was in 2006 that Dice last released on the label and five years on, he's back with a double sided cut - "Knibble Never Comes Alone". Written alongside long term studio collaborator Martin Buttrich, Dice explores an abstract and cerebral techno template with this EP. The A-Side opens up with sparse crackles, warped effects and a looped sole note as the atmosphere begins to take shape; a rumbling bassline arrives and catapulting claps and hats culminate into one of Loco Dice's most experimental works yet. Flipping over and "Loose Hooks" exudes a bold and chunky rhythm that builds slowly and intensely, its groove and dancefloor momentum increasing second by second until we are completely lost in its chaotic stream of sounds.

Review: From its minimalist aesthetic, increasing output and steady impact on electronic music since 1998, a blueprint has been developing at Minus. "Nothing Much" takes a snapshot of rock solid Minus memories that are more nouveau than retro, challenging any notion that the sound has remained the same. While not representing the complete history here on disc, the compilation addresses a deeper note with a bonus disc showcasing Berlin's Troy Pierce as he weaves a web of stolen moments from the catalogue. Minus are connecting the storytelling pop behind Heartthrob's "Baby Kate" and Mathew Jonson's "Decompression" to the funk flex of Gaiser's "Egress" or Marc Houle's composed anthem "Bay Of Figs". Created at first as a boutique, design-orientated musical gallery for Richie Hawtin and select electronic artists, Minus has grown into a megaphone for minimal techno and everything beyond. Its sound and style has branched out by enlisting a troop of inspired producers and talented performers that can rock the house and delve deep into the psyche with precision and skill. Post-everything electro, techno, acid and house, the sound has blended its own unique vintage.

Made up of music composed almost exclusively on the road, the "Gone Astray EP" is driven by choices and ideas that would not normally have surfaced in a typical studio environment. It's an innovative, ambitious project, not least because it tackles so many abstract themes in one sitting, often taking more than one mix to fully explore the hidden pathways that disappear off into this dense catacomb of sound. Minus present this deluxe package.

Review: Troy Pierce continues his mission up river into the heart of darkness, with arguably his most accomplished collection of tracks to date.

Review: RUOK? RUOK? Everyone's been there at one time or another but no one's documented it quite so explicitly as Ambivalent (aka Kevin McHugh) on his first release for Minus. Set against a stripped down groove, you can almost feel the back of your eyeballs start to sweat as the pitched down vocals narrate an all too familiar tale of late night over-indulgence (also included in acappella form). The whip-crack snare struggles to contain a sliding, elastic bassline and a fuzzy synth line infiltrates the proceedings like a wasp that's somehow got trapped inside your head. The vocals grow increasingly demented in the breakdown before the subsequent return really cranks it up a notch. The hi hats double up and the subsonic toms pound the life out of the sound system right through to the end of the track. As with all Minus EPs, there's a cold logic running through this body of work that may not be immediately apparent by just dropping the needle casually on each track. "R U OK" is a collection that demands detailed consideration and will no doubt make a timeless companion for any DJ.

Review: Niederflur has always been an essential cog in the Minus wheel of invention. Since 2001 the ND series has been skilfully navigating the treacherous waters that separate the genre's purer shores from today's more evolved, post minimal sound...which leads us to the "Din EP". It's a welcome return to Minus for Niederflur and as with all their work, the devil is in the detail. The elegant combination of horizontal and vertical elements offers intense stimulation to both mind and body, making this EP a must for traditionalists and forward thinkers alike.

Review: Some of Richie Hawtin's favourite tunes are included in this dynamic four-track EP from Run Stop Restore (aka Troy Pierce and Marc Houle). Past meets the present here, with Kraftwerk, Human League, Berlin and Bauhaus all weighing in on "Geometry. It's funky minimal house with retro electro overtones, the kind of cool, easy techno you'd find in a Magda set these days. Essential for the Minus heads out there!

Review: Of the continuing themes found throughout the music released on Minus, one constant exploration is the relationship between sound and silence. Within the stripped down but dimensional outcome there exists a polarity that is neither controlled nor accidental, where life imitates art in between the notes. The act of finding inspiration from a sonic molecule or the inaudible space around that element is the nature of expansion and contraction. This is an excellent compilation.

Review: Equal parts perspiration and inspiration, "She's Dancing Machine" delivers with micro-edits, custom loops and lofty effects, born out of her DJ ascension from beating the bits out of her Final Scratch setup in clubs. The mix has the range you'd expect with top shelf artists included such as Metro Area, Ricardo Villalobos, Marc Houle and Robert Babicz and sets up some surprises from decades past by dropping in Larry Heard and Portion Control. Amongst personal favourites from The Persuader (Svek's Jesper Dahlbäck) she's not afraid to loop in her own productions from Minus and her new label (along with Marc Houle and Troy Pierce), Items & Things.
