Review: Premier dub techno outlet Greyscale from Lithuania welcomes back Lotech/Hijack following the success of his last album here, Static Phase. He has served up another full length's worth of sublime deep dub techno explorations here, and that marks his rather remarkable 36th full length in total. Winter Constellations is inspired by the Canadian's love of star gazing and the vastness of space and results in plenty of widescreen and cinematic tracks that are subtly detailed with celestial moods. From the power of 'Let's Forget Who We Are' to the infinite depth of 'Auriga' via the airiness of 'Night Sky Dreaming' and 'Horologium', this is another masterfully immersive work that really exploits the album format.

Review: The impeccable Lithuanian label Greyscale is a real leader when it comes to dub techno and already they are racing into 2024 in fine style with a first full-length of the year from label head Grad_U! The sublime and immersive Sustain has eight larges ambient soundscapes that are detailed with field recordings from another planet. Each one is alluringly empty and beautiful, intriguing and unsettling to make for an escapist trip to another dimension. The way the producer manages to conjure up what feel like familiar emotions in such a faraway world is second to none and will leave you wanting to do it all over again the second it ends.

Review: For those who dig what was once called progressive house, the Balance series from Australian label EQ has always been a "must check". Most contributors tend to push the boat out, resulting in deeply melodic and otherworldly sets that blur the boundaries between true mix and full-on production. That's certainly the case here, as Spanish DJ/producer (and part-time TV sound designer) Henry Saiz carefully crafts two discs of prog-not-prog blissfulness. Saiz's sound is based on the fusion of IDM electronica and shuffling, early morning house, and that's the overriding theme here - giving the mix an enjoyably fluid sound and style.

Review: After four appearances on Lithuania's Greyscale, Ajnkana delivers his first long player Integers Equations, with more than an hour of "tangibly eerie, atmospheric chords", ambience but not ambient-edged beats and dubby effects either destined for play on deeper dancefloors or comedown soundtracking post-party living room sessions. The titles may be blank as anything, all binary and consisting of 1s and 0s in slightly different orders, but the instrumental, slowly-enveloping tracks have plenty of personality. Fans of Sahko, Chain Reaction and Ilian Tape's more esoteric offerings will love it.

Review: Global Underground's' Select' series acts as a kind of annual nod to all the club-focused and after-hours music they love, mixed together by an un-credited DJ or studio engineer to keep things moving. 2024's edition - the ninth to date - is naturally packed to the rafters with tasty tracks from both established producers and rising stars. That means an attractive, immersive and frequently emotive mix of ambient-tinged deep electro (Pablo Bolivar & Nacho Sanchez), evocative tech-house (Dixon re-working Nandu's 'Around', Guy J's hypnotic, acid-flecked 'State of Trance'), pitched-down neo-trance dreaminess (Joris Voorn editing Solee), grandiose big room workouts (Fur Coat & Lexur), 21st century acid house (Phunkadelica remixing Damon Jee) and uplifting progressive house (D-Nox).

Review: Six years after debuting, Global Underground's Select series has reached its seventh instalment. Like its' predecessors, the two-disc set offers a pair of non-stop mixes (created by an uncredited DJ or studio engineer), both of which are packed to the rafters with up-front, soon-to-be-everywhere cuts plucked from the worlds of tech-house, progressive house and techno. Expect tracks and remixes from the likes of Stephan Bodzin & Marc Romboy, Ame, Patrice Baumel, Gorge, Steve Bug, Fur Coat, Captain Mustache [sic] and Alan Fitzpatrick, plus a breathless, life-affirming flow and entertainment aplenty. Review: Greyscale use the end of 2022 to look back at what they have achieved so far. And that's a lot as this third volume of their already much-loved Mood Series proves once more. This one focuses on releases #41 to #60 and features the label owner grad_u making the selections. Top ones they are too, with Conor OG's deliciously deep 'Disembarking' setting a nice dub mood before there are excursions into frosty minimalism from Francisco Aguado, sub-aquatic bass bliss from Stoll hypnotic horizontal rhythms from BT Gate X-138, amongst many more standouts. 2022 was a fine year, then, and we're already looking forward to what 2023 has in store for us.

This time it is BT Gate X-138's 'kV Pylon' that serves as the musical vehicle to take us on a trip through rich sonic landscapes and an array of emotions. Over seventy sublime and spacious minutes, this vital CD goes from grainy and lo-fi moodiness on the opener to explorations of the ocean floor on '330kV Test' via gloriously uplifting and optimistic pieces of melodic beauty such as '330kV Test'. It is another triumph from a label and artist that will find favour with all techno and ambient lovers.

Review: Since releasing his debut album 12 years ago, Solomun has become one of the world's most popular tech-house artists - a DJ/producer with a wonky but accessible style tailor-made for big rooms and debauched afterparties. His change in status is reflected on belated second album Nobody is Not Loved, which appears via major label MBG packed with guest stars including Jamie Foxx, Zoot Woman and Planningtorock. Wisely given his DJ roots, the Hamburg-based producer has made the set a non-stop mix that gently increases in intensity before mellowing out again right at the end. Highlights include the minimal-meets-deep soulpop opener 'Ocean', the Isolee-influenced melodic shuffle of 'The Center Will Hold', the tech-house-goes-electroclash sleaze of 'Tuk Tuk' and the moody, new wave-inspired darkness of 'Kreatur der Nacht'.

Review: Recorded during lockdown - hence the rather apocalyptic title - and made in part using a different set of hardware and software tools than his previous work, Year of the Living Dead has a slightly different feel than John Tejada's previous full-length excursions. Of course, his fine grasp of mood and melody remains a major feature, as does his love of warming ambient chords and dreamy electronics, but these elements are twisted round a wider variety of rhythms (think mutant electro, post-dubstep UK bass, UK garage and dub techno), with warm, deep and rich sub-bass coming to the fore throughout. Tejada rarely misses the mark, of course, but there's a surprising freshness to the album that means you'd do well to sit up and take notice.

Review: It's heartening to see that the long-running (and once ridiculously popular) Global Underground mix series is still serving up new volumes. Their latest comes courtesy of Dutch star Joris Voorn and is being marketed as a wholehearted, full-throated tribute to the city where he came of age, Rotterdam. Musically, it's something of a thrill-a-minute ride, with the Dutchman somehow managing to squeeze almost 120 tracks into his two-disc set, in part by layering up elements of numerous cuts to create new compositions (or, as he calls them, 'Chapters'). The result is a non-stop journey through three decades of dance music culture that variously touches on a wide range of house and techno sub-genres whilst remaining rhythmically interesting and action-packed.

Review: Given that they started their ascent to EDM superstardom over a decade ago and have already released a string of genuine crossover anthems, this debut album from Camelphat is undeniably overdue. So was it worth waiting for? If you like their brand of festival-friendly dance music hedonism, then you will genuinely love it. The assembled 21 tracks scattered across two action-packed discs draw influence from many interconnected styles - mostly electro-house, tech-house and techno, but also indie-dance, synth-pop, nu-disco and more bass-heavy flavours - and repackage them as distinctively Camelphat productions, complete with contributions from numerous collaborators and guest vocalists (Noel Gallagher, Skream, Jake Bugg, Yannis Foals, Jem Cooke and Christoph all feature).

Review: While there aren't many duffers within the vast DJ Kicks catalogue, it would be fair to say that some of their chosen selectors do make more of an effort than others. Jessy Lanza, the latest DJ to provide a mix for the long-serving series, has undoubtedly taken it seriously and used the opportunity to cram in tons of killer cuts and take us on a genuinely thrilling, action-packed musical journey. After opening with a trio of her own shimmering, star-bright future R&B/leftfield synth-pop productions, Lanza sprints between fuzzy, off-kilter house and techno, punchy electro, sparkling underground electronic pop, bubbly electronica and dubbed-out electronic epics, before variously offering up ambient, sweaty drum tracks, and bouncy, garage-influenced goodness. In other words, it's a fabulously entertaining affair that's well worthy of your attention.

Review: Igor Arsenjev's work as Gradient - and rather a lot has been released since he debuted in 2009 - has frequently dived deep into the more ambient, sound design obsessed end of the dub techno spectrum. On his new album for Ranges Records, the long-serving producer has tweaked his template a little. What's an offer, a suite of nine tracks, retains the hypnotic, locked-in, late-night feel of his tracks, but relies more heavily on deep techno sounds and kickdrum-driven grooves than weighty dub basslines, drone textures and so on. Admittedly there are some echoing riffs drawn from the dub playbook - something that subtly comes to the fore midway through the album - but for the most part it's loopy, ultra-deep, percussively sturdy and, most importantly of all, deliciously alluring.

Review: A double CD celebrating the iconic award-winning UK electronic duo's 30th birthday, featuring reworks and remixes from the deep Orbital discography, as well as the well-known live improvisation tracks, featuring techno, acid house and electro contemporaries such as ANNA, Eli Brown and Shanti Celeste to name a few. With the actual 30th birthday delayed by the pandemic the duo concocted a physical compilation release with highlights all over the track list, especially Shanti Celeste's rendition of 'Are We Here?' and Eli Brown's update of the classic track 'Chime', lending the track more traditional house sensibilities. You can even find Professor Stephen Hawking lending vocals on CD1s hardcore techno banger 'Where is it Going?'. This compilation is a one stop shop for fans of Orbital's three-decade career, and the perfect starting point for those unfamiliar.

Review: As he's moved further towards a career in soundtrack composition, Trentemoller's music has become increasingly widescreen and atmospheric, with the Danish artist drawing inspiration from dream-pop, the Cocteau Twins and Durutti Column as much as the ambient, electronica and immersive techno he was once famous for. All of these strands combine beautifully on 'Memoria', a picturesque and enveloping affair whose multitude of highlights include the yearning, string-laden and bittersweet brilliance of 'No More Kissing The Rain', the wall-of-sound dream pop shimmer of 'In The Gloaming', the mid-80s indie-pop haziness of 'Dead or Alive' and the glassy-eyed and tactile 'All Too Soon'.

Review: Since joining forces as HVOB in 2012, Anna Muller and Paul Wallner have received as much praise for their live performances as their studio work. It's perhaps fitting then that their first album release in three years is not a carefully crafted studio set, but rather a recording of their April 2019 show at Electric in Brixton, one of 72 dates they performed around the world that year. Complete with whistling and cheering crowd noise, Live in London offers the most extensive showcase yet of the pair's trademark sound - a melodic and melancholic fusion of vocal electronica, tech-house grooves, nods to grittier techno and plenty of dancefloor-pleasing peaks and troughs - while also evoking a genuine sense of time and place.

Review: Cologne powerhouse Kompakt may not be talked about as much as it once was, but the label continues to put out high quality electronic music with its own distinctive vibe. For proof, check the 19th annual edition of their now legendary compilation series, "Total". There's much to set the pulse racing amongst the 25 tracks scattered across two CDs, from the shoegaze-influenced haziness of Weval's "Are You Even Real" and the picturesque, piano-sporting dancefloor deepness of Tom Demac's "Serenade", to the neo-trance throb of Rex The Dog, the twisted techno intensity of Voigt & Voigt, and the intergalactic electro/rave fusion of Raxon's strobe lit "Raxon".

Review: Four years have passed since John Digweed's last four-disc mix outing, with the pandemic scuppering the veteran DJ's plans to record an extended set in an exotic location. Instead, what we get is a lightly edited recording of Diggers' most recent gig at Fabric in London, from the autumn of 2021. If you love Digweed's trademark DJ sound - smooth, long blends, melodic builds, dreamy chords and layered melodies alenty - then there's plenty to savour across this epic mix album. While there are a few techno tracks squeezed in on disc four, for the most part Digweed effortlessly joins the dots between tech-house, deep house, progressive house and the kind of melody-rich, atmospheric electronic fare that has always been his sonic calling card.

Review: Tom Trago's voyage with "Voyage Direct" keeps on going and going, this time the journey continues as the Amsterdam DJ / producer unleashes two of his live versions.

Last year's seven track mini-album was received with much critical acclaim. It served as a reminder to many that house music can still be deep, raw, sexy and passionate. Following its success, two EPs followed with remixes from Motor City Drum Ensemble, Actress, Ardvarck or Sotu the Travller.

Now, Tom Trago goes back for another adaptation of the album one last time. Live Takes consists of outtakes from his live performances, as the title would suggest.

Opening with an extended disco version of "Use Me Again" this release bridges the gap between the studio and the live performance, between old and new. It shifts in and out of the original unassumingly, meandering between the two for over eight minutes. Rather than just your straight up re-edit, this version is more akin to a new, modern version of the original.

The flip side is much more club orientated. An exclusive from his live sets, here Tom strips the classic "Over and Over" right down to the minimum, only allowing the original groove to appear momentarily before the updated, Chigargo-esque rhythm takes over again.

These two tracks cover two shades of equally compelling disco house. First we get the deep and funky side from "Use Me Again" and then there is the more pumping, jacking style from "Over and Over." Either way, they both get the dancefloor rocking!

Prospective pharmacist, Nicolas Matuszczak, comes up with 10 of the world's finest pearls, full of sparkling charm, sense and sensibility, lightness and elegance that only a young French debutant from Nîmes can create. Matzak seems to be in good company in this pretty, little town: Delon & Dalcan, Paul Nazca, Florent, 22 Crew and a number of most successful producers live and work in Nîmes. And they all are far from locking themselves up in their studios: they organise parties, run labels and are touring across France. Life Beginnings is literally pregnant with meaning: it has been created over a period of nine months and accompanies a growing love and the growing new life of his daughter. Ultrasonic scan by scan, feeling by feeling.

Review: Hamburg based label Dial Records shot to fame in the second half of the 00s with their high brow approach to deep, minimal house and techno. Founded in 2000, they now celebrate their tenth birthday with a new compilation featuring all their usual suspects, aptly titled 2010.

Set up at the turn of the millennium by Carsten Jost and Peter M, better known as Lawrence, Dial remained largely unnoticed at first. It was only the last five or so years that the imprint famed for its sophisticated and emotionally evocative style of deep and minimal house came to the wider attention. Releases such as Efdemin's "Bergwein" EP and Pantha Du Prince This Bliss have garnered them the most attention leading up to today's celebratory compilation. But rather than just collecting the finest moments from those ten years, such is Dial's ethos, that they celebrate with entirely new material, including previously unreleased tracks from the likes of Rndm, Pigon and John Roberts.

Opening the compilation in typically refined style, Phantom Ghost embark on a fittingly theatrical ode to the pleasures of the highlife with the twilight keys of "My Secret Europe." Cultivated 4/4s then take over, starting with John Roberts who brings a classical element into the mix on "Lines." Efdemin explores sensuously deep tribalism on "Time," whereas Kassian Troyer uses layers of sub bass on "Tourist" to get into the groove. Isolee makes a rare appearance with some trippier house moments on "Black Lodge" before Pigon take it unfeasibly deep on "Koto." One of the label's starlets, Pantha Du Prince adds one of the highlights of the release with the enveloping masterpiece of "Fountain Drive."

Dial celebrate their tenth year, and twentieth release, the only way they know how - with a selection of tracks that look unreservedly forward, proving their need to do more than simply sit back on their previous successes. I'm just looking forward to their 2020 compilation.

Review: Le Rok is a project from German producer Christoph Dohne. "Approx Twelve" is his second album for the Karaoke Kalk label. On "Approx Twelve" Dohne has managed to construct something even more dynamic than his previous release, "Hausarbeiten". This is electronic music, first and foremost - but while Dohne has the production prowess of the best electronica has to offer, he never lets the production dictate the music. Although his tracks contain hiccups, glitches and other such digital artefacts, they are at the core pounding dance tracks which would be most at home on a sweaty dancefloor. Slinky synthesizer lines are layered rudely over popping bass and pulsating percussion, yet unlike so much 'dance music' Dohne retains a melodic core which distances his music from so much else in the scene. Just skip to the mischievous "Choped Ride", you instantly hear the digital trickery suggested in the title yet there's something more daring and more fun-loving in there too - imagine if Prefuse 73 was making house music and you might have some idea where Le Rok is on the musical spectrum. A daring and unique statement from a remarkable artist, "Approx Twelve" shows that there's more life yet in the ailing electronic music scene, and that Le Rok isn't afraid to get the party started!

Review: Danish minimalist Martinez is already an integral part of Leipzig's Moon Harbour imprint. Having already released three EPs for the label, including his 2008 debut and recent jam, Cheesecake," the talented producer has become an important label ambassador at live dates across the world. Now, he delivers his first LP for the imprint, and his third album overall. The aptly titled Paradigm Shift sees Martinez assimilate an abundance of deep house references into his usual palette of minimal and techno. Alongside lush moments of deepness such as the inimitable "Lavender Mist" and polished "Maresias," Martinez treats us to the warm and contented sounds of "Gourmet". Intertwining the record with bursts of funk laden electronics, such as "Solaris," "Kamino" and "Mr Decocco," Martinez is also explosive at all the right times: "Damaged Color's" slinky low bass and the driving beat of "Williamsburg" both point to a more club focused angle, giving the record yet more amiable balance.

Review: Few labels manage to cause such a stir with their first releases as Steffen "Dixon" Berkhahn's Innervisions. Besides running the club night Innercity which takes place in the epicenter of Berlin, through his label he offers a hand picked selection of producers a platform to celebrate the current renaissance for all things deep house. This first compilation is a review of the labels output in the last year and so shows exactly where it is at. The concept behind the club orientated 12"s is a balance between peaktime A-Sides and more dubbed out B-Sides. With his special edits, Dixon opens up the tracks for household use. His shortened and stripped down versions make what is essentially DJ music more suitable for home listening. After having had a helping start with the first maxis by Jazzanova's Sonar Kollektiv, from now on Innervisions stands on its own feet and is run by Dixon and his partners in crime, Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann from Ame. "Where We At" presents the current state of play of a highly regarded crew who are getting equal respect from purists, minimalists and freestylers alike. The goal is not to be obsessively futurist, rather comfortably balanced between the old and the new. Thereby they capture the essence of, for example, a Ron Trent or Chez Damier number translated into the present day, just as Atjazz does with his piece "For Real". One view of the future of Innervisions is delivered by the Parisian buddies I:Cube and Gilb'r (aka Chateau Flight) with their highly individual opener "Baroque". "Sleepy Hollow" by Berlin internet forum activist Stefan Goldmann who has already released on Classic, Josh Wink´s Ovum and Perlon, is currently being heralded as this year's "Rej".

Review: Through projects and labels like Basic Channel, Maurizio or Main Street Records, the Berlin-based producer team of Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald have exerted a decisive influence on the worldwide development of techno-house and electronic music during the 90s. Under the name Rhythm & Sound, Ernestus and von Oswald pioneered their own hybrid of Reggae, Dub and Electronics. In recent years, they have come up with their own and totally unique definition of Reggae. "See Mi Yah" (released in March 2005) is a classic 'One-Riddim-album' comprised of ten vocal versions plus the original instrumental track of "See Mi Yah"- Riddim by Rhythm & Sound. The album had previously been released as a series of 7" singles (including three alternate versions of the instrumental track). On "See Mi Yah" one can hear the voices of Paul St. Hilaire, Ras Perez, Koki, Ras Donovan, Freddy Mellow, Walda Gabriel, Sugar Minott, Willi Williams, Bobbo Shanti, Lance Clarke as Rod Of Iron and Joseph Cotton aka Jah Walton as Jah Cotton. The remix version of the album (which has also seen a previous release in the form of a series of 12" singles) transplants the 'strictly roots' approach of the originals into the club. The result is a diversified collection of excellent club tracks. And while each of these retains its autonomy and its individuality, the whole album sounds as if carved from one piece. While listening to it, one simply forgets that this is a remix album. From dry digi-Dub, UK steppers, minimal Electronic and Disco House to deep atmospheric tracks, all kinds of current club sounds are represented here. With this project, Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus - who after all stem from a club music background - have brought together several generations of DJs and producers. From collaborators of long standing such as DJ legend Carl Craig to promising newcomers, a great array of artists helped to create this album.

Why Can't We Be Like Us?
Review: 'Why Can't We Be Like Us' feels like a logical progression from Pansato's eps for labels like Orac, Philpot, Hello?Repeat, and his
creative powers as one part of the duo Half Hawaii on Perlon. Musical suspense that processes feelings and soul through electronic
vibrations. Everything sounds like Bruno Pronsato plays it himself on his machines and follows the 'I am an instrument' dictum.

Review: At the head of every organization, family, or crew, there is a leader, a patriarch, or don. These heads tend to be outspoken yet observant, opinionated yet flexible, and always in possession of a certain charisma to hold the family together. True to form, at the top of the Contexterrior Media Family stands Jay Haze. Holding reign over the Tuning Spork, Contexterrior, Junion, Tuning Spork Family Affair, Future Dub, and Textone labels as well as Contexterrior Bookings. Jay has built a family of labels, musicians, artists, bookers, business associates, legions of fans, and perhaps most importantly, homies. In minimal business since 1999, when minimal meant something completely different and was relegated to record store back shelves, Jay has presided over an amazing period of growth in minimal electronic music as well as that of his own career as a producer, DJ and business owner. To date, during this uphill battle of getting minimal to the masses, Jay and "Da Family" put forward a mountain of work comprising 88 EP's, 5 albums, and the Tsunami Relief compilation which raised $50,000 for an orphanage in Indonesia, featuring many of the same artists presented on "The Minimal Grind."

At the current position of this journey sits this 2 CD mix compilation, made up of 47 tracks spanning the outer limits of electronic funk while keeping it in the family. With Jay's 2 ½ hour monument paying homage to the bass drum (among other things), "The Minimal Grind" gives the careful listener an insider's glimpse at the minimal business from deep inside its sparse urban Berlin heart. From the dark smoky stench of a Sunday after party that's been incubating for 20 hours, to the big industrial clubs and everything in between, the music that fuels the non-stop Berlin reveller is presented here: from the big thump jack to the spaced-out digital freak funk. In Berlin, where a decent party can be found on almost any day of the week, its all just part of the "Minimal Grind". Welcome to 'Da Family'.

Review: A selection of eighteen tracks, all mixed, looped, edited and manipulated to form a obscure tech-funk back bone on which Molina gets busy. Clinical and alluring, Molina's fifteen years in the techno field shines through with real clarity - as 'Wax Sessions III' matches eclecticism with industrial beats and vitalising soundscapes to carve a disparate sound that ranges from dub and Basic Channel through to Detroit and European minimalism.

Review: Swayzak are their old selves again! James Taylor's fatherhood sabbatical is over, David "Brun" Brown managed things during his absence anyway, and now they return together with their album "Some Other Country." Swayzak's new opus sounds mature and full. Swayzak have always loved their echo pedal, but in their tenth year of existence, their dub-techno attains a new, compositional dimension.

Review: Renowned producer, remixer, DJ and record label owner Carl Craig is one of the few artists who can truly claim to have shaped the sound of
modern electronic music. Making music since the tender age of 17, Craig has created everything from ambient soundscapes to jazz
during the past 20 years, but it's his work in dance music that is at his core. 'Sessions' is a long overdue album that brings together a personal
selection of Carl's incredible back catalogue, from his early work under the aliases Paperclip People and 69 to worldwide hits like 'Throw'
(recently covered live by LCD Soundsystem) and groundbreaking tracks like 'Bug in the Bassbin'. Alongside the classics, the two discs also showcase why Craig is still such a powerful force in music today with a diverse range of remixes for the likes of XPress 2, Theo Parrish and many others. For his rework for Junior Boys'. 'Like A Child' he was just nominated for a Grammy.
The selection also includes previously unreleased tracks, alternative versions of his own productions, as well as some exclusive unreleased
remixes. 'Sessions' reminds us of how exciting and unique Carl Craig's productions and remixes are and why he remains at the top of his game,
a retrospective of one of the world’s most influential and groundbreaking figures in electronic music.
