Notes: Weird Walk Zine Issue Seven

48 page A5 zine

Printed on high quality PEFC certified recycled stock

With the sun at its lowest ebb, and the night stretching to its longest duration of the year, Weird Walk Issue Seven is offered up as a symbol of the continuing cycle of rot and renewal, death and new life.

Taking inspiration from the woodland, author Nadia Attia explores the folklore surrounding some of Britain's iconic tree species, while leafy associations abound as the Hastings Jack in the Green festival is reflected upon, and the suitably named Verdant Wisdom collective take us through a rural take on dungeon synth music. Elsewhere two mavens of weird walking, Alice Lowe and Benjamin Myers, lead separate quests in two very different locations, each filled with magick and memory.

And if trees can emotionally connect us to the landscape, then so can the old stone monuments that so entrance us; in this issue, phenomenological approaches to ancient sites are explored (and, also, cheese).

Includes photos by Sarah White, Rachel Adams and Freddie Miller.

On The Potential Of Limited Order by Marc Schwegler
Cat: 779172 Rel: 03 Aug 20

On the Potential of Limited Order is the English translation of an essay written by former zweikommasieben editor Marc Schwegler
Notes: The original German text, written as a companion piece to Andrea Taeggi's album Nomeri-Tere now appears in an English translation by N. Cyril Fischer and a completely re-worked design by Dorothee Dahler and Kaj Lehmann.

On the Potential Of Limited Order begins with a consideration of the conceptual framework for Nomeri-Tere.

Schwegler then reflects on current tendencies in music and sound art concerned with romanticizing the selfexpression of a constructed Other, both of objects and sound itself. In a tour de force through the history of modern Western thought, the essay draws from structuralism and phenomenology to argue for a strictly antiessentialist ontology of sound.

Riso-printed magazine, hand-bound with white thread

Sound American No 24: The Sun Ra Issue
Cat: 784363 Rel: 21 Jul 20

Issue celebrates interstellar icon and generative force of nature, Sun Ra.
Notes: The 24th issue of the New York music magazine focuses on the figure of Sun Ra.

Sun Ra (1914-1993) is an African-American experimental jazz pianist and composer. A prolific artist, he recorded over one-hundred albums with his band, the Sun Ra Arkestra. His work is imprinted with esoteric elements drawn from a personal cosmic philosophy that had a great influence on Afrofuturism.

A quarterly journal founded in 2012 by Nate Wooley, providing in-depth interviews and essays, Sound American starts from a simple desire to open the doors of experimental music to a wider audience. Sound American believes that music is for everyone and should be shared on the most basic human level. Sound American aims to accomplish this by creating a direct intellectual, social, and emotional bridge that links audiences and artists.

Blank Forms 5: Aspirations Of Madness
Cat: 784366 Rel: 23 Jul 20

Aspirations of Madness considers the work of Masayuki Takayanagi, the poet Louise Landes Levi, musician and writer Joseph Jarman & more
Notes: Aspirations of Madness, Blank Forms' fifth collection of archival, unpublished, or newly translated texts, takes its title from a series of interviews with Japanese free jazz pioneer Masayuki Takayangi that were published in Japanese in 1975-76 and are published here in English for the first time.

The interviews provide a rare look at Takayanagi's eccentric practice and personality, both long under-recognized by audiences outside (and often, inside) of Japan. The postwar Japanese history that Takayanagi describes also surfaces in this publication's opening piece, a poetic tribute by the writer and artist Louise Landes Levi to one of Takayanagi's contemporaries, the poet Kazuko Shiraishi.

Aspirations of Madness includes a second Levi poem as well, "A Deep River," written while at La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela's Dream House in 2003. Complementing this tradition of Japanese free improvisation and poetry is the republication of a 1977 interview with Joseph Jarman, the great composer, poet, and multi-instrumentalist.

Zweikommasieben Magazin #17
Cat: 693409 Rel: 03 Jul 18

Feat Alessandro Cortini, Anna Homler, Christoph Fringeli, John Maus, Peter Rehberg, Russell Haswell & more!
Notes: In the 17th issue of zweikommasieben something that has been apparent from the beginning of the magazine - whose credo is to study the present - only seems increasingly true: in the supposed present, temporalities overlap and intersect. They burst out, reaching at once backwards and forwards.

The magazine features interviews with John Maus about the six years between the release of his last two albums, with Anna Sagstrom and Daniel Iinatti of Country Music discussing accelerationist force of globalization or with Alessandro Cortini on the private retrospective of 1970s Italy in Avanti. In those conversations the nature of time shows itself as enigmatic, fragmented and displaced.

On top, this issue features interviews with Anna Homler, Errorsmith, Further Reductions, Gabber Eleganza, Jasss, Ossia, Peter Rehberg and Renick Bell; conversations with Russell Haswell and between Christoph Fringeli, Simon Crab and Nigel Ayers; a portrait on Mmodemm; an essay by DeForrest Brown Jr.; columns on gender in dancehall ("Basslines"), authenticity of field recordings ("Track Down Fiction"), pictures from Georg Gatsas ("We Are Time") as well as poetry with "Sound Texts"; and contributions by Angoisse, Ipek Gorung & Ceramic TL and Jay Glass Dubs.

In zweikommasieben #17, the nature of time also shows itself in the design-a design initially looking for an aesthetic of speed but ultimately as much a reflection of pausing as of deceleration and acceleration. And in this attempt to give form to time, there's also the primordial-musical moment.
