Review: The follow up to 2017's critically-acclaimed long form outing, 'This Is Eggland', has certainly had fans chomping at the bit since its release was announced. The Eggs continue to beguile, mystify, entertain and impress in equal measure, and have been unveiling some truly captivating singles - complete with equally captivating sleeve design - in the run up to this grand unveiling, whetting appetites no end. So here it is, then, the promise and the proof. 'I Am Moron' cements the British band's position as fiercely independent in attitude and irreverent in style, calling on experimental, psyche, indie and punk to deliver a devastating commentary on the country the outfit calls home - from the plight of working classes to the beastly hypocrisy of those higher up the salary and food chain. Not to be missed, not that you needed us to tell you that.

Review: While Helena Hauff and her Return To Disorder label may be best known as a go-to for gutter-dwelling electro and techno, her intentions and tastes reach way beyond that. Here she welcomes back the brilliant Children Of Leir, UK-based psych garage outfit with a style that comes on like 13th Floor Elevators, My Bloody Valentine and Amon Duul popping 'ludes and heading to the last chance saloon. Huge wall of sound guitars, liberal effects processing and as much scuzziness as they can muster can't hide the pop sensibilities buried away in the songs - these guys are the real deal.

Review: Here it is then. The UK's Cockney wide-boy with a penchant for old school croonerdom - or at least showmanship - delivers his long awaited sixth album, his most anticipated to date and the one that's set to cement him even further as a household name. Like the guy in the sharp, Rat Pack-esque suite you talk to down the local boozer, a guy whose eccentricities are only equaled by his (often volatile) life experiences, 'The Night Chancers' is all about observations of everyday outsiders. In many ways the tracks themselves are relatively formulaic - nobody is re-writing any of the recording rules here. Constant use of female backing vocals accentuating some of the traditional pop roots at play here. Nevertheless, everything is exceptionally well produced, with Dury's dulcet, spoken word storytelling as blunt and uncompromising as it is poetic.

Review: It's not without good reason that people have been likening Peel Dream Magazine to My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab and Yo La Tengo. Helmed by Joe Stevens, one of New York's finest contemporary players, the outfit makes music that's tender but savage, powerful but delicate and packed with beautiful discordance hiding its sumptuous melodies. 'Agitprop Alterna' is their second full-length release and it certainly adds fuel to the argument that people need to take this lot very seriously. In addition to the aforementioned, here it nods to Velvet Underground (notice the tripped out, opiate-hazed interludes throughout the album) and krautrock-leaning art pop. The record drones, drives, grooves and perplexes on its course, but most of all it unarguably impresses. Or at least that's what we've got to say on the matter.

Review: Ten albums in and still going strong, it's hard not to use words like 'timeless' when discussing the work of M Ward. It has been said that his output sits somewhere between post-military Elvis and the Beatles hitting top gear in terms of consistent quality, and we'd be rather partial to agree. Basically, those with a penchant for the kind of songs that were made to soundtrack overnight journeys through the Badlands, road trips across the 50 states and the very notion of Big Country will do very well here. Ward is a master of Americana and a dab hand at making the familiar sound engaging rather than boring. An immediately recognisable character who refuses to divert from his chosen route, when all is said and done nobody would really want him to.

Review: The last ten years have seen no shortage of bands with their delay pedals set to stun intent on capturing an aura of dreamlike radiance. Yet Texas 'pop-noir' troupe Cigarettes After Sex are no ordinary shoegazers, for a variety of reasons - frontman Greg Gonzalez' androgynous and dulcet tones may be part of the appeal, yet moreover it's the quality of the songwriting here, which never falls prey to the style-over-substance traps of their peers. Indeed, this debut is more than enough to justify the considerable hype around this outfit, being a collection of ditties as sultry as they are atmopsheric.

Review: Josh da Costa and Jamen Whitelock are CMON, a Los Angeline pop duo who are destined to do great things, providing there is a god. Or at least such a thing as just rewards. Or fate. 'Confusing Mix Of Nations' is just too good a debut album to not make an impact and set wheels in motion towards real household recognition for the pair. Don't take these words for it, though. Take a listen. The two masterminds responsible clearly understand that 'pop' itself is a term that often generates derision, but only among those who don't grasp what the misleading genre should really mean. Less about sales and popularity, and more about a deep and visceral feeling invoked through music with a genuine universal relevance, expect to be coming back to this time and time again.

Review: Album number six from the Ruffians certainly means business. Honest and painfully on-point in terms of overarching themes, its sonically highly polished and - while not a concept record - incredibly well conceived as a coherent whole. A rock 'n' roll offering that grabs your body to make it move while boring into your mind and soul to make you think and feel. Word on the street is this was some three years in the making, and it certainly feels like an un-rushed process will have led to this package. Tracks kick and punch in all the right places, but they never forget the need for balance, peaks and troughs. It's more than likely that you'll walk away from this with the scale of the anthems cemented to the mind, though, rather than the more tender moments. After all, it's a masterclass in major key melodies, and a striking example of the powerful effect those have on listeners.

Review: The second single to be taken from the forthcoming album by The Lovely Eggs, 'I Am A Moron', finally sees the light of day, confirming that the long player, when it gets here, is likely to be a pithy and rather cutting take on the world as it is today, or at least society as we have now made it. An all-consuming, unrelenting system that will eventually eat itself up. It ends with a belch, not a whimper or a roar, then. One of the most unique aspects of the Eggs is their staunch independence, refusing to adhere to the rules of management, labels, publicists and so forth. This has always been reflected in their sounds, and on 'Still Second Rate' things are no different. You can easily hear muscular psychedelia, alt pop and avant-electronic-punk elements, but the combination of those things is entirely fresh, and unarguably vital.

And that's why most people are wrong, or have at least failed to strike up a relationship with Montreal outfit Tops. Since 2012 the troupe have been making music exactly like that, and with 'I Feel Alive' the recipe proves particularly potent. You could identify shades of Fleetwood Mac on more than one occasion here - the disco hues of 'Direct Sunlight' is one example, while 'Colder & Closer' makes light work of throwing some synth pop into the mix further down the line. Ultimately, though, it's as much about sharp lyricism as anything else, with tales of adultery, the relentless drag of casual sex and more making for quite the poignant take on modern life.

  10. IDORU (4:47)
Review: It's hard not to be impressed by everything Grimes touches. From the moment this album's trippy downtempo titular opener emerges from submerged depths of sound you know the latest from the Canadian is going to be a special moment in pop. As if to accentuate our point, "Delete Forever", two tracks later, introduces acoustic guitar tips while still retaining deep timbre and utilising effects to hypnotic ends on those hummed vocal loops. "IDORU", which closes out the record, feels far more playful, simple keyboard and whispered choral lyricism introduced with a backing track of bird song, before broken club beats fall in. It might be most fitting to finish a write up on the aptly-titled "You'll Miss Me When I'm Not Around", its guttural bass guitars and EDM-leaning vocal stabs not the only things reminding us the world would be weaker without this one.

  11. My Hurling Days Are Done (5:07)
Review: Morrissey is arguably the most divisive British pop artist working today. Some loathe him, others stand by amid countless controversial statements. Few would deny his place in the pantheons of music, though, even if you feel it's really about The Smiths, creating an unusual quandary for the listener - dividing their own opinion, not just separating that from others who don't think the same way. In many ways 'I Am Not A Dog On A Chain' is the album he needed to make, revealing an artist known for egotism as finally accepting some limitations and realities. 'My Hurling Days Are Done' and 'The Secret Of Music' both lament the passing of time, for example. But then in many ways, musically speaking, what's here is his most bold and striking album in decades. A real testament to the broad understanding of what makes a powerful track powerful, to say the least.

  1. House Music All Night Long (5:55)
  2. House Music All Night Long (Jason JACK IS mix) (6:07)
Review: It's up for debate whether house music managed to create for itself the best tagline of any genre, ever, but either way Jarv Is clearly wants to appeal to our sense of nostalgia and community with this two-track EP that is pretty much quintessential fare when it comes to the canon's emotive sound. Opening with the original mix, expect the kind of euphoric party vibes combined with a slight sense of reflective melancholia that can really make one track stand apart from so many of its four-to-the-floor peers. Warm vibes, soaring vocals and an epic, almost-gospel charged chorus. Flip it to find something a little closer to acid, jaggedly rave synth lines and staccato strings abound. Altogether exactly what you want to really set the house party off.

Review: With the combination of band name and album title this one's always going to be a bit of a tearjerker, packed with self-reflection and self-loathing. No regrets, though, as Greg Gonzalez muses on sensuality, the loss of those we care about, the loss of self to another and the endless yearning of the human heart. Shades of Lord Huron and a wealth of gloomy shoegazers can be felt, but even though "Cry" represents a next step for Cigarettes After Sex - edging into more minimalistic territories - it's still immediately identifiable as this band, and so won't fail to instantly resonate with avid fans. Packed with an exquisite, opiate balladry at once heartfelt and heartbroken, it's hard to tell whether this is exactly what you need to hear when living through your blue period or precisely what you shouldn't listen to. Either way, it's quiet impact is immense.
