Dark Entries are back with more of that sweet, sweet goth sauce in the shape of Topographies. The San Francisco band have been building up a following for their faithful tribute to sad-eyed synth-pop and new wave from the early 80s, releasing an album in 2020 on Funeral Party as well as a single for Sonic Cathedral. It's not hard to pick out the influences, and it all makes sense when you learn Gray Tolhurst is the son of The Cure's Laurence Tolhurst. They're not simply aping another band's sound though and if you can't get enough of that quintessential goth rock sound, you're going to love this record.

Review: Wanderwelle is the Amsterdam-based ambient duo of Phil van Dulm & Alexander Bartels, who mint their Maalstrom label with Wat Gebeurde Er Met Sergeant Massuro?, a concept album based around Harry Mulisch's 1957 story of the same name (What Happened To Seagent Massuro?). The story weaves anti-colonial concepts with mythical realist elements, and is sonically brought to life here through atmospheric electronics and prepared instruments. A moody, resonant and ultimately deep groundswell of an album, one that compels the listener to venture ever further into the a spine-tingling heart of darkness.

Review: Tinted Windows is the wondrously, almost hilariously cast supergroup comprising guitarist James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins fame, Taylor Hanson of Hanson, bassist Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne, and Cheap Trick's Bun E. Carlos. Brace yourself for a reminder of this ingenious grouping this 2024: the debut self-titled album was first released in 2009 and though it intended to synergise each founding members' successes as part of their earlier projects, also did fantastically well at portraying a contemporary take on the 70s and 80s pop rock quintessence. Lead singles 'Nothing To Me' are instantly reminiscent of Ferris Bueller in the drop-top, though all come dashed, even sprinkled, with a hint of 90s pubic power punk a-la 'Stacy's Mom', as we should expect from a Fountains Of Wayne adjacent.

Review: On limited yellow vinyl comes the latest LP from the elusive ambient moniker known as Abul Mogard - impossibly distant, impossibly close - this time made in collaboration with equal and match, Rafael Anton Irisarri. Having made friends serendipitously at the sold-out opening of the SoundSet Series at Madrid's Condeduque cultural center in 2023, at which they performed together for the first time, the duo's encore that evening compelled them to get their heads down and commit to a collaborative studio session. What followed was an intense, modular-synthetic jam that, in its final studio-polished incarnation, unfurls and ripples like dark pond water. Both tracks, most notably 'Waking Up Dizzy on a Bastion', slow-burns into the heights of glory and tearful sentiment, as if capturing the feeling of time slowing down when confronted with death in the heat of fortressed battle.

Part of the Gospel Music According To Joe Claussell series, the moment marked the apogee of the DJ and producer's stint in the world of edits and overdubs, after which he'd move into spiritual house musics of a less sample-based making. Now, however, we return to 'Praise' with two special edits cut to a limited edition 12" sampler, harkening a return to the form and a bigger box set in the series to come, a decade on; first we're met with Myrna Summers and her choir on 'So Much To Live For', which lays bare the holy-ghostly hooks and kick-clapped stamps; then there's a similar edit of Bishop Jeff Banks' 'Jerusalem', which whips out the Hammonds and sopranos for the B.

Review: The latest full-length LP from Aural Imbalance continues serenely on the heels of an already well-travelled career. Now seeming to avow the often almost eternal sounding nature of breaks and drum & bass, a title like Infinity Spectrum implies that this is a career that could happily go on forever, were we not mere mortals. As ever, the album is interstellar in theme, each track doubling up in function as names that could also easily denote distant star systems or galaxies; 'Aurealis' and 'Alpha' are standout cuts in this regard, pitting rolling pitched 808s, rattling arps, and nebular pads together, behooving the ever-central breakbeat that sets us off on a journey to find some glistening lost alien artifact. Though there is a destination, it really is about the journey; by the time we reach the C-side, 'Slow Motion' ups the sonic sulphur content with a detour through an airier, major-keyed gas-planetary iceworld, while wondrous scoped-out rollage judderer 'Apparation' proves that even space provides its own mirages, its own fata morgana.

Just two long pieces, 'Piece Of Forever' and 'Waking Up Dizzy On A Bastion', titularly grasp at the theme of eternity, determinism, historical peaks and troughs: the supporting atmosphere is equally as impressively arresting, seeming to urge the listener to 'give over' and move with the flow of time, less than the flow of will. Review: Medellin-based American Bosq - a renowned musical fusionist with a passion for all things tropical - has been working with Benin-based Nigerian guitarist/vocalist Kaleta on and off for 12 years, with the pair delivering a series of sensational singles. No Be Today is the duo's first collaborative full length, with previous singles being joined by previously unheard cuts across two slabs of wax. Review: Following the breakout success of their acclaimed 2000 sophomore effort Maybe I'll Catch Fire, California gothic pop-punk heroes Alkaline Trio began to outgrow their label Asian Man Records, even being instructed to look for a bigger label-base as the increased demand for physical copies and merch became too much for label head Mike Park to handle. This would eventually lead to the band being courted by Vagrant Records in order to distribute their now commercial and career high point From Here To Infirmary in 2001, which would also serve as their only work with drummer Mike Felumlee before being replaced with punk-drummer extraordinaire Atom Willard for touring purposes. Review: First released in 1988 on the fittingly occultic-in-name Kaos Dance Records, 'Something Scary' is the debut EP (originally 12") by Belgian new beat/acid formation Zsa Zsa Laboum. Evincing a genre specificity that not even the average obsessive can muster, the eponymous track heard here has gone down in history as one of the quintessences of the hard beat microsound. 'Something Scary' nails it all; a deep fried, horrific acid line serves as the main engine for a mortal confrontation in sound, peppered throughout by FM cascades, sparse resampled djembe, and ghostly murmurations verging on EVP pickups. The EP is here lent a full on rejig, with a brand new instrumental reconstruction released here alongside two fresh smokeout versions from Anatolian Weapons.

Review: Wackies Rhythm Force was the Wackie's label's session band and they first put out this album, The Dub Generals, in 1998. It is now reissued on the original label but as a self-titled The Dub Generals LP. It still packs the same essential and pure dub punch that it always did and for that reason, it's a sought-after original that costs a few quid if and when you manage to find one. The label was headed up by dub producer Lloyd "Bullwackie" Barnes who maintained a busy studio in the Bronx and worked with several different key players such as Horace Andy. The label was also a key inspiration for the legendary Berlin dub techno dons Basic Channel.
