Deep Structures Special EP
Cat: KOSMOS 037. Rel: 23 Jun 15

Drum And Bass
Electrosoul System - "Under Deep Sky" (5:33)
M25 & First Function - "HD Drink" (6:40)
Bop - "Skeptikos" (Despot remix) (6:30)
Dissident - "Pseudo II" (5:20)
Review: D&B kosmonauts Kosmos Music unite a whole crew of native creators for this special Deep Structures EP. Ahead of his album release on Med School, Electrosoul System lays down a game-changing half-time/full-time growler with "Under Deep Sky". M25 & First Function follow with a really interesting roller that utilises vocal snippets and elements in a genuinely unique and funky way. Deeper again, Despot adds a great sense of epicness and star-gazing wonder to Bop's already immaculate "Skeptikos" while Dissident lays down a jittery, frenetic steppy funk on "Pseudo II" that sits somewhere between the sprightliness of Fracture and the experimentalism of ASC.

Technics SL-1200M7L 50th Anniversary Limited Edition Direct Drive DJ Turntable System (blue, single)
Cat: 873818 • View all DJ turntables

SL-1200M7L comes with a limited edition Technics sticker, a control vinyl sticker the same colour as the turntable itself, and a slipmat featuring a gold Technics logo.
Notes: To mark the 50 years anniversary of the SL-1200 series, this limited edition model is available in seven colours, inspired by the street culture created by DJs. Each colour features a gold tonearm along with a special badge inscribed with serial number.

SL-1200M7L comes with a limited edition Technics sticker, a control vinyl sticker the same colour as the turntable itself, and a slipmat featuring a gold Technics logo.

The direct drive system uses a slow-turning motor to directly drive the platter. This system has various advantages. It offers high performance, such as rotation accuracy and powerful torque, does not require replacement of parts and maintains high reliability over a long period of time. On the other hand, the direct drive system was said to produce a rotation irregularity called cogging. For the SL-1200M7L, a new coreless direct drive motor was developed. This motor employs a coreless stator. The removal of the core (iron core) from the stator eliminated the root cause of cogging. Furthermore, the magnetic force of the rotor magnets was improved to the highest possible level, and the gap between the coreless stator and rotor magnets was optimised, thus achieving high-torque-performance equalling that of the SL-1200M7L. Boasting smooth rotation and powerful torque, this motor reproduces sound accurately and faithfully from the groove on an analogue record.

The newest digital motor control technology, accumulated through the development of Blu-ray disc products, is applied to improve adjustment by allowing the torque and brake speed to be adjusted individually in four steps.

The pitch control function allows fine adjustment of the rotation speed within i8% / i16%. It does this through digital control, from positional detection of the slider to rotational control of the motor, eliminating the unnecessary DA conversion. This greatly improves tracking performance to achieve accurate and stable pitch adjustment.

The reverse play function, which brings forth new possibilities of creative performance, makes its first appearance in the SL-1210 Series. In addition to 33-1/3 rpm and 45 rpm, a rotation speed of 78 rpm is supported.

*The torque / brake speed adjustment, rotation speed switch, and reverse play can be adjusted by switches on the main unit.

The tonearm, which has continued to support the leading edge of the DJ scene for many years, inherits the highly reliable static-balance universal S-shape tonearm. Using high-precision bearings, it achieves a higher initial-motion sensitivity than the SL-1200M7L. This accurately tracks the groove on the phonorecord to assure excellent tracking performance with minimum stylus jumping even in harsh playing conditions such as scratching.

The stylus illuminator features a new push-type structure for intuitive operation, and employs a high brightness and long-life white LED. The illumination area and intensity were reviewed to provide improved visibility of the stylus tip even in a dark environment.

Review: Loraine James continues to trust her instincts and serve us some of the most honest and original music within the leftfield electronic sphere right now. Having recently paid tribute to the work of Julius Eastman on Build Something Beautiful For Me, now she retunes to Hyperdub with the record she claims the teenage version of her would have made. The label text makes explicit reference to the likes of DNTEL and Telefon Tel Aviv as well as math rock, but James is also way out in her own zone metabolising such influences into unique expression. There are some wonderful guest spots from the likes of RiTchie, Marina Herlop and Eden Samara, while James herself centres her voice for some of the album's most poignant moments. Gentle Confrontation is another outstanding chapter in James' ever-intriguing story.

To celebrate this monumental milestone, both camps have collaborated to create a clothing capsule to accompany the release. Better Together is the slogan that runs throughout the entire collaboration, stressing how unity makes us stronger as individuals. A diverse array of offerings are featured here: experimentally minded offerings by Ashtrejinkins and Brassfoot, System Olympia does slo-mo electro, while sublime deep house comes courtesy of Shamos and Shy One, and label chief Steven Julien provides some emotive broken beats.

Review: In order to mark their 20th release, Invisible Inc has put together this tremendous compilation loosely inspired by Philip K Dick's dark, retro-futurist sci-fi masterpiece Blade Runner. It's a willfully eclectic and hugely atmospheric affair that tends towards the cosmic and otherworldly, with contributing artists including a mix of experimental pioneers, lauded experimentalists and contemporary rising stars. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, with notable cuts including a languid, pitched-down Afro-cosmic remix of Richard Bone's "Saiyuji Dawn" by Daniele Baldelli and Marco Dionigi, the sludgy mix of field recordings and tropical ambience that is Komodo Kolektif's "Fire Walk", a glistening chunk of West Coast bliss from Secret Circuit, a deep space ambient dub masterpiece by Bal5000 and some impeccable ambience from long-serving electronic composer K. Leimer.

Review: Given the upsurge in interest in all things disco and boogie in recent years, it's perhaps unsurprising that Ibiza's Glitterbox night - established in 2014, and returning for a second season this June - is one of the White Isle's most hyped events. Here, the brand delivers its' first compilation, a two-disc mix-up of disco, house and electrofunk from Defected boss Simon Dunmore, with a third, unmixed disc thrown in for good measure. Packed with disco classics (Chaka Khan, Todd Terje's rub of Chaz Jankel), synth-heavy boogie (World Premier, Skipworth & Turner), breezy soulful house (Ultra Nate, Ten City) and stone cold anthems (Ashley Beedle remixing Bent's "Magic Love", Sure Thing, Storm Queen), it's an enjoyable romp through smile inducing, goodtime pastures.

Review: Paradise On Earth is Hot Creations' new DJ mix series, with the title doffing an over-sized cap to Jamie Jones' semi-regular Paradise club events. Volume one is mixed by two rising stars of the colossal-room house scene, Patrick Topping and Toronto-based Nathan Barato. The latter handles disc one, moving from the post-boompty beats of Derrick Carter and Moritz Piske, to the throbbing techno of Robert Hood. Along the way, Barato finds space to squeeze in cuts from Ian Pooley, Green Velvet and ItaloJohnson. Topping takes a different tack on disc two, regularly breaking up the 4/4 rhythms with older, breakbeat-driven house cuts, while also finding space for the previously unreleased "Acid Gadaffi" by Jack N Jerk, and Metaboman's deliciously woozy "Next Please".

Review: On this superb two-disc compilation, Opilec Records boss I-Robots shines a light on the Piedmomt area music scene in the 1970s and early '80s, showing how Italy's own Motor City, Turin, helped give birth to the Italo-disco scene. It's a killer collection, showcasing a range of obscure, little-known records that joined the dots between U.S funk, soul and disco, German krautrock, the proto-techno of Kraftwerk, and the synthesizer sounds coming out of the U.K. Remarkably, the 38-track collection contains numerous demos and unreleased alternate versions, drawn form the archives of the original producers and labels involved. If you're at all interested in the Italo-disco sound, Turin Dancefloor Express is an essential purchase.

Review: Dan Piu wrote this album during the "dark, dystopian times" of the last year. The record's themes take in nature, human life, sci-fi, cyborgs and plenty in between with opener 'Tru Confession' being a robust house track stacked with throwback breaks, futuristic synths and old school vocals. There is a real warmth and soul to the machine sounds of 'Un-X-Plored Exodus' while a certain sense of 90s New York house colours 'Upgrade System M59'. 'System Of Ethics' shows off a fine mastery of synth craft that brims with emotion and 'Asteroid Blues' is like a lost Kerri Chandler cut. Essential.

Review: Is Ministry of Sound's 'The Annual' the longest-running compilation series in dance music history? It's certainly a contender, given that the London superclub brand has been delivering volumes every year since the early 1990s. The latest instalment - '2023', despite being released in late 2022 - follows the trend set by its predecessors by rounding up edited versions of bona fide club anthems and future crossover hits. That means plenty of well-established talents are represented - Eats Everything, Fisher, Fatboy Slim, Disclosure, Bad Boy Chiller Crew, Calvin Harris, Eliza Rose, Tiesto, Paul Woolford and MK all feature - but also rising stars and artists we'll be hearing a lot more in the years to come.

Review: Given Sven Vath's unique and long-standing career in techno, it's fascinating to think about what he was playing in the early years of the Dorian Gray and Omen, two pillars of Frankfurt nightlife. This unique retrospective looks back over the 80s and early 90s, touching on the early EBM, new wave and industrial sound Vath first came up through, capturing the early wave of Detroit techno and Chicago house, the first whispers of European trance and techno and lots of curveball selections in between. It's an exuberant, eclectic view into one of the most flamboyant selectors out there, and whether you're a fan of Vath or just love the era, these are three CDs bursting with incredible music.

Review: A bumper 3CD and downloadable collection of quality funky house favourites with a Latin flavour at a very pocket-friendly price. For 2006, Defected are using their extensive and high quality house music back catalogue to offer three CDs and an extensive digital package of top class funky dance music at one very special price. This second edition in the 'For The Love Of House' series boasts a Latin flavour and follows the success of the first installment of funky house anthems. This is a budget album unlike many of those currently on the market in that it combines commercial but stylish packaging with a tracklisting selected directly from one of the world's most highly respected and best loved house labels and its associated offshoots. Includes music from heavyweight producers and artists such as Bob Sinclar, Roger Sanchez, Martin Solveig, Sandy Rivera, Junior Jack, Shakedown and ATFC. 'For The Love Of House' features top ten chart hits alongside clubland favourites. This is an album that reverses the trend that low price equals low quality.3xCD features six tracks exclusive to this format, while the download exclusively includes Wally Lopez's 'Helicopter'.

Review: Discophilia Belgica is a collection of 'next-door-disco and local spacemusic' from Belgium circa 1975-1987 - compiled by Loud E & The Wild. The compilation is not indicative of any actual 'scene', as most of the bands featured had probably never performed live. The selection of tracks featured here are the result of a decade of crate digging in flea markets, charity shops and vinyl trades - picking out what might appeal to a contemporary dancefloor or just to their own eccentric tastes. Highlights include R. Roland's French-pop inspired "Ethero-Disco" and Carl Watson's sleazy jazz-flute heavy "King Kong" to the C.C. Band's disco floor filler "Be My Love Tonight".

Review: The third album by IDM's next-gen darling Loraine James is here and similarly to her last works, Gentle Confrontation is an ever-shifting, collaboratively-focused album. If the name is anything to go by, then the aim of the game is to offer a sonic blueprint for artists trying to quietly, subtly, resist the status quo, while also keeping the family close and remaining level-headed and happy. Examining her past and present, James offers with everything from transstep trances made with RiTchie and George Riley, to math-rock and emo-infleuenced tracks ('One Way Ticket...') and even self-sung ballads ('2003').
