Review: Yet one more classic eight-tracker to now be reissued via Creation Rebel's home label On-U Sound, Rebel Vibrations was their third album for Hitrun and followed up 1978's Close Encounters Of The Third World and Dub From Creation. Similarly lackadaisical and spaced-out to its predecessors, Rebel Vibrations nonetheless charted a slight upping of the weighty ante - with bass parts becoming more prominent and starker - and a refining of the delays and FX as they sit in the mix.

Review: As part of a rather comprehensive looking back and reissuing of some of Creation Rebel's best and most enduring albums, On-U Sound pay due homage to their one and only in-house band. Close Encounters Of The Third World is one such album; it was first released in 1978, and draws a titular link between alienation and privation. The eight-track LP collates the instrumental talents of Lizard The Wizard, Dr. Pablo and Crucial Tony, and hears a fantastic mixing job by none other than Prince Jammy. With an initial charge to 'Know Yourself' before externalising the pilous inner monologue with 'Natty Conscience Free', Creation Rebel here demonstrate a stage of collective soul-searching and a subsequently serene set of songs.

These have all, at some point over the year's been deployed at maximum volume through the unique and hand built Channel sound system. Review: Wackies impress upon us their latest compilation; this time, it's another (sixth) edition added to their Jah Children Invasion series, which charts the critical juncture at which dub reggae shifted from live-drummed beats and into drum-machine led, steppers' embraces. The result was a welcoming of 8-bit themes and pixelations, leading to the infamous coinage, digidub. Jah Children Invasion harks back to this not-so-small step for mankind, compiling scene contributions from such legends as Horace Andy ('Drop Off'), Jackie Mittoo ('Majority Rule'), Milton Henry ('Now You See The Scene'), and Chris Wayne ('Streets Of Africa'). The resulting sound is not one of total fascination with the 'digi' aspect of the sound, but a prototypical, melting-pot point at which the leap into increasingly sequenced progressions lent dub a cruder, but more driven development of the sound. A sonic Faustian bargain with a machinic devil, if you will.

The eight tracks all tap into deep roots and find the artist working with drum and percussive maestro David "Jah David" Goldfine as well as alongside Roberto "Lone Ark" Sanchez who mastered several instruments including the melodica, guitar, drums and organs. Between them they all manage to cook up steamy roots jams that centre the culture with a timeless sound. It's seriously alluring and here without the vocals the whimsical melodies and rolling beats all have even more of an impact.

Review: Back in the 1970s, Boris Gardiner was digging deep and tilling his dub fields and often coming up with real treasure. This second volume of Ultra Super Dub on Now Again is a mega rare collection of work from Gardiner, a Jamaican bass player, bandleader, songwriter and singer of great repute. This is the first time this one has been reissued and it comes with great context in an extensive booklet. It is one of the landmark albums of his career so it's great to have it back in print.

Review: Carlton & The Shoes were a Jamaican vocal group also known as The Manning Brothers. After debuting on Studio One in 1978, they followed up in 1982 with This Heart Of Mine, a now much sought-after slice of sweet, heavy lovers rock and roots for serious reggae diggers. Japanese label Overheat are doing the right thing and reissuing this absolute treasure of a record on the 40th anniversary of its release, letting smouldering joints like 'Never Give Your Heart Away' come back to life and charm a whole new audience.

Review: For the first time since 1982, Creation Rebel's Psychotic Jonkanoo is made available on vinyl. Curiously first released on the primarily post-punk oriented Glaswegian label Statik, their sixth album here keeps to the usual eight-track formula, yet hears a softer discographic progression; compared to their earlier works, it is less prodding and weighty, and instead opts for a headroomier and more reverb-laden atmosphere, through which the album's distinctive and novel call-and-response chants can peek. Bandleader Crucial Tony was aided on the vocal front by harmonies from other group members, in a style reminiscent of Black Uhuru, plus the occasional guest such as John Lydon of the Sex Pistols and Public Image Limited providing backing harmony (!) on 'Mother Don't Cry'.

Review: Well? Time to swallow your pride and get some courage! Or, so said the supergroup Israel Vibration, who first channeled their anti-cowardliness message into song form with 'Why You So Craven' in 1982 via Arrival Records. A standout single, its namesake soon came to refer to an entire album of the same name, which is now reissued here via RAS. Aside from the damning condemnation of money and desire heard on the titular song, other star bits on the album include 'What's The Use' and 'Highway Robbery', flaunting their distinctive roots-radical vision (masterminded by none other than Scientist) and aim to impel the listener into conjuring a new world for themselves.

Review: Big Crown Records is proud to present Zero Grace, Liam Bailey's sophomore album on the label. Following the success of 2020's Ekundayo album, the tried and true chemistry of Bailey and producer Leon Michels (El Michels Affair) is on full display again as they take the sound they established and push it further. On Zero Grace they lean more into the bleeding heart singer-songwriter side of Liam. The album is full of freedom and love; working with Leon Michels and Big Crown Records has encouraged Liam to be himself. On opener 'Holding On', Bailey speaks to his observations & fears when looking out at the world in front of him and also to the dedication it has taken to get on the other side of his personal trials & tribulations. 'Dance With Me', meanwhile, is an instantly infectious two-stepper that nods to those incredible soul records that were coming out of Jamaica during the early reggae days. Bailey addresses the racial tensions that plague humanity and encourages everyone to step up and do their part to help foster equality. What starts out as a declaration of injustice turns into a call for action and an inspiration for hope.
