Review: It's fair to say that "Ur Fun", the first album in years recorded by of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes on his own, is less an album-proper and more a collection of very, very strong singles. Each vying for attention against some intimidating competition elsewhere on the track list, it's important to make clear that while all are individuals, the LP doesn't feel disjointed or cluttered. It's just a whole lot of, fun. "You've Had A Good Time" seems to summon the spirit of the Pet Shop Boys circa 1989. "Deliberate Self Harm Ha Ha" might remind some of Kasabian, and '"Gypsy That Remains" is a dreamy, deep-but-direct synth workout wearing heart firmly on sleeve. Sonically diverse, it's impossible to deny that to pull off something like this you really need a master songwriter and instrumental crafts-person.

Prepare for an entirely new batch of chaotic, effortless bangers from a group who only emerge when they have something vital to accost their listeners with. Review: Legendary Southern California punk band The Offspring celebrate the 20th anniversary of their Platinum-selling sixth album Conspiracy of One by reissuing it on vinyl. Delivered on a heavyweight slab with a fancy gatefold cover, the reissued version features the bonus track 'Huck It', which was the title track of The Offspring's 2000 VHS/DVD Huck It, and anthemic song that has often been heard behind various skateboard stunts. Produced by Brendan O'Brien who also work with greats like Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen, the record packed din plenty of singles such as 'Want You Bad,' 'Million Miles Away,' and the biggest of them all, 'Original Prankster.'

Review: They may have taken their insanely catchy punk rock to the top of the charts, but The Offspring started out in the underground like any other band. This collection of demos takes us right back to the beginning, when they were some snot-nosed SoCal thrashers with everything to prove. That's why you get treated to the likes of a cover of Sweet cover 'Ballroom Blitz', but even in their rawest state the band were no joke. The track 'Tehran' from 1988 is an interesting precursor to their subsequent 1991 single 'Baghdad', where the political climate clearly shifted from one Middle Eastern crisis to another. Balancing hardcore energy with their sharp melodic sensibility, this is a fascinating insight into the roots of Dexter, Noodles et al.

Review: Talk about airing your dirty laundry in public. Real-life couple Anthony and Josephine Vander West advocate inviting others to observe your process of self-redemption on their latest outing as Oh Wonder. Although not necessarily made in the pandemic, 22 Make is the direct product of what happened to this ace, unarguably shiny but always innovative alt-pop tag-team when the music stopped. Or at least when touring halted. Suddenly finding themselves facing a very different world, and a much more closed-off and isolated reality in which new experiences were hard to come by and they really only had themselves for comfort, the make or break situation very nearly resulted in the latter. Hence last year's 22 Break LP. This is the follow up, which explains, through their rousing but often delicate brand of nice melodic stuff, how the relationship was saved and new levels of appreciation for each other were fostered and cemented.

So hard to pin down, the work here straddles many genres, all of which are accessible in their own way. Yet it never fully commits; universal adoration is clearly the goal.
For dedicated fans "No One Else Can Wear Your Crown" may be jarring. The record sees Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West, et al, explore avenues that aren't always the obvious matches for their sweet pop lullabies. There's more than a smattering of EDM throughout, see those power drops and all that synth discordance. "Nothing But You", arguably the finest here, sees contemporary R&B and shiny hip hop flows come to the fore. Of course there's plenty of Oh Wonder-ness too, "Happy" being one example, but this will be remembered as their most daring and different to date.
