Cat: PRTL 10023. Rel: 05 Jan 21
  1. Shuruaat Aur Ant (4:55)
  2. The Beginning & The End (4:29)
Review: This is a limited 10" from the always on form and in demand Alpha & Omega who offer up one of their golden oldies, 'Shuruaat Aur Ant', from all the way back in 1991. The A-Side was previously an album only cut that now deservingly gets its own side of wax, and the flip 'he Beginning & The End ' is a dub version that has never before been on wax in any form. The opener is a true hypnotic dub roller thank tot he haunting Hindi-sampled vocal that drifts above insistent drums. The flip is stripped of that so takes on a rather darker feeling.

Ghetto Stays On The Mind
  1. Ghetto Stays In The Mind (5:07)
  2. Ghetto Dub (5:08)
Review: Impact/Onlyroots are non-stop in December with a whole heap of vital 7"s dropping and covering some fine dub and reggae territory in the process. This is another fine reissue that sets its sights on a classic 1972 roots reggae roller than first came from Impact Records with superb production by Sonia Pottinger. 'Ghetto Stays In The Mind' is a classic with dreamy harmonica leads and a rumbling rhythm section that brims with detail and character. The flip side is a dub that is just as great.

  1. Simmer Down (2:49)
  2. How Many Times (3:03)
Review: The always well curated Rock A Shaka Japan comes through with another superb 7" here. 'Simmer Down' was the first single released by The Wailers, who were accompanied by the ska supergroup, The Skatalites, with production from the man, the legend, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd in 1963. It was the number one hit in Jamaica when it was released in February and was all about sending a message to violent gangs and crime lords to calm their fires. The excellent and lo-fi 'How Many Times' is a raw, real jam that swaggers to and fro with real spunk.

Cheater
  1. Dennis Brown & Impact All Stars - "Cheater" (3:00)
  2. Tommy McCook & Impact All Stars - "Harvest In The East" (3:23)
Review: The latest deep dive into the archives of Vincent "Randy" Chinn's legendary Impact label has unearthed two gems, both of which were initially featured on a now impossible-to-find, U.S-only ten-inch single. On side A you'll find the incredible 'Cheater', where Dennis Brown's weary but honeyed vocals hauntingly rise above a chunky, bass-heavy reggae riddim laid down by Chinn's impeccable Impact Allstars house band. The same riddim is reprised on flipside 'Harvest in the East', where Brown's mesmerising vocals are replaced by seriously good saxophone solos from the irrepressible Tommy McCook and brass band style horn arrangements.

  1. Everybody Loves The Sunshine (4:34)
  2. Everybody Loves The Sunshine (dub version) (4:34)
Review: Awesome sulltry Japanese only cover version of Roy Ayers annual summer anthem.Essential dubbed out bliss on the flipside.Limited stocks !Second time around for Robert 'Dubwise' Browne's sweet and sweltering reggae cover of Roy Ayers classic 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine', which appeared and disappeared from record stores in double-quick time earlier in the year. If you missed out then, we'd recommend taking a listen, because it offers the perfect fusion of leisurely, organic reggae grooves, spacey synths, twinkling pianos, super-soulful lead vocals from Browne and brilliant backing vocals from an all-female collective of singers. It also comes with a deliciously horizontal, spaced-out dub version on the flip - a revision that features even more intergalactic synth squiggles amongst the head-nodding grooves and delay-laden vocal snippets.

  4. Centry - "Old King Dub" (2:54)
Review: Partial are not mucking about in early 2021 as they unleash an avalanche of new 10"s that dig deep into the annals of dub history and come up with plenty of golden oldies well deserving of a reissue. On this one, UK dub stalwart's Centry and Manasseh step forward with 'Foot Pedal Dub' and 'Basement Dub' which are well wanted by the dub community and are previously unreleased raw instrumental dub cuts from 1991. Sound system plays from the likes of Aba Shanti helped establish them then and have kept them in the news since. 'Old King Cole' is from 1992 and is a sick instrumental with blazing horns.

Cat: HSRSS 0001. Rel: 24 Dec 20
  1. Peace Begins Within (2:57)
  2. Ay Ay Ay Ay (Ange-Lala) (3:06)
Review: Last year, Agnes Obel included Nora Dean's "Ay Ay Ay Ay" on her fantastic Late Night Tales and got plenty of people talking about this overlooked gem. Featured on the B side of this 7", it's an enchanting and folky dub backed by an ominous droning organ and psychedelic guitar riffs, with a sense of smoky soul, curious chants and whistles. With vocal effects that are reminiscent of Pink Floyd's 1968 track, "Julia Dream", Dean has perhaps delivered one of the strangest songs with the most compelling vocal performance in the history of Jamaican music. Flip over for early Reggae masterpiece "Peace Begins Within," on which Dean's vocals soar over an uplifting beat, despite the track being about the harsh re-alities of life. Tip!

Cat: ART 001. Rel: 07 Dec 20
  1. Barbara Don't Love Me (4:01)
  2. Dat Ting (4:20)
Review: He's hardly prolific, but DJ/producer Del Gazeebo has been offering up occasional re-edits, mash-ups and bootleg reworks for longer than some of us have been alive. Here he begins 2020 in fine fashion with two party-hearty reworks guaranteed to get the dancefloor moving. Aside "Barbara Don't Love Me" is a bouncy, subtly beefed-up take on a horn-heavy 1960s soul/rhythm and blues classic that sounds like it would go down well at parties that love Northern Soul. Flipside "Dat Ting" meanwhile is a head-nodding take on a punchy soulful reggae cut underpinned by weighty bass and tight hip-hop beats.

  3. Melbourne Douglas - "Rude Boy Don't Fight" (2:50)
  4. King Deadly - "Joshua A Mek Riddim Run" (2:46)
Review: Having already delivered a multi-artist EP of Reggae Dynamite earlier in the year, nostalgia-fired producer Neil Anderson serves up a speedy sequel on his popular Original Gravity label. Toaster Melbourne Douglas kicks things off with the ska-flavoured cheeriness of 'Rudy Skanking on the Moon', before returning later in the EP with slowed-down, rocksteady style reggae fuzziness of 'Rude Boy Don't Fight'. Elsewhere, label regulars (sorry) the Regulators deliver a high-tempo, Hammond-heavy instrumental workout (the excellent 'Caymanas Park Rocket'), while King Deadly layers languid organ solos over a more dub-wise groove on EP standout 'Joshua a Mek Riddim Run'.

  1. Wha She Do Now (2:13)
  2. I Love The Reggae (2:49)
Review: Although best-known for their early rocksteady singles and albums, Jamaican group the Gaylads also made some fine 'proper' reggae in the late 1960s and early '70s. 'Wha She Do Now', which was recorded and first released in 1969, is a great example. It was produced by Clive Chinn and features the group utilising their distinctive solo and group vocals atop a seriously bass-heavy riddim track rich in hazy Hammond organ stabs and chunky guitars. Over on the flip you'll find another gem from 1969: the extremely rare, Vincent Chinn produced 'I Love The Reggae' - a horn-sporting celebration of reggae music that's far more club-ready than the admittedly excellent A-side.

  4. Pollution (False Locks version) (3:16)
Review: The latest essential EP from Partial Records takes us back to 1996, mining a now sought-after EP from Jah Warrior and soulful vocalist Naph-Tali. In its original vocal mix form, 'Pollution' sits somewhere between Melodica-laden roots reggae, '90s digi-dub and the up-tempo, hard-edged UK steppers sound, albeit with a distinctive percussive shuffle full of military-band style drum fills. It's rather good all told, with the accompanying dubs - the second of which wasn't released first time round - delivering sizable bass-weight, echoing percussion hits and hazy late-night textures aplenty. The EP-ending 'False Locks' version is a dub style revision two, with Jah Warrior subtly paying tribute to the similarly raw, weight and digital effects-laden productions of fellow UK scene stalwart Mad Professor.
