"Be What You Want To Be"
"Be What You Want To Be" (140 gram vinyl mini LP 再プレス)
Cat: ERC 083. Rel: 09 Sep 19
  1. Soft Touch (4:19)
  2. Keep On Dancing (3:42)
  3. In The Rain (3:26)
  4. Be What You Want To Be (4:41)
  5. Papa "Doo" (5:17)
  6. Why Not (4:10)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: As far as collaborative delights go, this really takes the cake. Miami boogie wildcard Noel Williams, aka King Sporty, throwing it down heavy with legendary Jamaican reggae axe man Ernest Ranglin - as you might expect, the results are incendiary. "Soft Touch" has a hint of the cosmic about it as it romps through insanely catchy chorus chants, stirring brass stabs and Ranglin's sweet licks. "Keep On Dancing" has a more uptempo feel, "In The Rain" slips into a laid back reggae skank and "Be What You Want To Be" turns the vintage disco heat back up. Throughout this wonderful mini LP, the duo switch between each other's strengths and bring out the best in each other, like all good collaborations should.

Massive Attack vs Mad Professor Part II (Mezzanine Remix Tapes '98)

  6. Exchange (Mountain Steppers dub) (5:45)
  7. Wire (Leaping dub) (5:16)
  8. Group Four (Security Forces dub) (8:07)
Review: Way back in 1998 when Massive Attack's career-defining "Mezzanine" was first released, legendary dub technician Mad Professor cooked up some radical reworking. They now get their first official release alongside dubs of two tracks that never actually made it onto the album - Metal Banshee: a dub version of "Superpredators" which was a cover of Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Metal Postcard", and "Wire", which was actually recorded for the film "Welcome to Sarajevo". Wild effects, plenty of knob twiddling and oodles of reverb define this freaky late night collection and mark another essential release in the catalogue of the already legendary Mad Professor.

Babylon Paralysis (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: FPR 005. Rel: 23 Sep 19
  1. Congo Shuffle (version) (7:07)
  2. Invisible Guest (6:54)
  3. Paralyzed Dub (2:32)
Review: UK dub techno maestro Steve O'Sullivan is back with another payload of deep immersion heaters under his Bluetrain guise, this time on the Future Primitive label. There's a deadly restraint at work on "Congo Shuffle", where the elements get reduced to needlepoint precision and the low end rhythm section stalks with purpose. "Invisible Guest" takes things in an explicitly dubwise direction, channelling serious Rhythm & Sound vibes for an immaculate head-nodder, before "Paralyzed Dub" slows down further into an end of the line skank for the weary to find solace in - masterful movements in the echo chamber from start to finish.

  6. For Sleep (6:03)
Review: 12th Isle's latest must-check chunk of entertaining experimentalism comes from Lo Kindre, whose dub-wise 2017 debut on Optimo Music was arguably one of that year's most overlooked EPs. "Chlorophytum", the producer's first solo missive since then, is another lo-fi electronic dub treat. Of course, it's not all gentle bass-heavy rhythms, endless delay trails and cute electronic melodies - closing cut "For Sleep" is a buzzing electronic raga, for example - but it's on these bass-heavy excursions that Lo Kindre most frequently hits the spot. Highlights include the extraordinarily sub-heavy shuffle of "Sounder", the ambient dub wooziness of "Aibell" and the creepy alien-dub oddness of "No Hiding".

Secretsundaze Mixtape (limited mixed cassette + MP3 download code)
Cat: TAPE 002. Rel: 02 Oct 19
  1. Track 1 (44:05)
  2. Track 2 (44:00)
Review: Secretsundaze return with a second volume of their new mixtape series. After the success of the Joe Claussell tape they turn to Carista for another introspective mix aimed at a relaxed home-listening session.

In May 2018, Carista performed one of her first international gigs at Secretsundaze in London and went on to play 2 other shows for them that year. A year later, she has become a mainstay on the European club & festival circuit, playing to an ever growing, passionate and loyal fanbase week in week out, already playing shows that most DJs would only dream of, including closing a stage at Lowlands festival to an audience of 10000. No wonder a recent Mixmag article crowned her as "A DJ star in the making".

Her residencies on NTS and Red Light Radio showcase her love of house, boogie, broken beat, disco, funk and beyond. Her DJ gigs can also see her explore further into house and techno but this mixtape showcases a different, softer side of Carista blending ambient soundscapes, jazz, dub and soul as well as some poignant words from Nina Simone.

This is Carista's debut physical format release so don't sleep!

  1. Armagideon Time (Discomix vocal) (2:28)
  2. Armagideon Time (Discomix version) (2:38)
Review: Studio One have put out plenty of big tunes and this is the latest to get a big reissue on a super loud-cut 12" single for extra devastating impact. It's a well-known classic every self-respecting reggae fan should know and blows up any party, especially when tweaked like these two versions. They were originally produced by Studio One bossman Coxsone Dodd and have been covered by The Clash as well as sampled by The Fugees and hip hop MC KRS One. The snaking lead synth, the rumbling drums and classic ska trumpet are all straight up irresistible.

The Nassau Sessions
The Nassau Sessions (40 gram vinyl 7")
Cat: LWKMUS 006. Rel: 20 Nov 17
  1. Jet Ski
  2. Lavender In The Night
  3. Sweet Genius
  4. Shit To Buy
Review: As Galcher Lustwerk's label continues to expand at an easy pace, so this intriguing prospect arises from the lesser known Double Pelican Man. As The Nassau Sessions title might imply, this is a departure from sleek house and techno into an abstraction of the island boogie sound, taking some cues from digi-dub and 80s dancehall but offsetting it with a final mix that is all its own. "Jet Ski" is a perfect slice of canned dub for mellow heads, and "Sweet Genius" is the pick for a more audacious application of delay and reverb, but the bass on "Shit To Buy" makes it the standout track on this collection of dubwise jams.

  2. AJ Franklin & The Inn House Crew - "Where You Gonna Run To" (feat UK Principal & Vin Gordon - version) (4:17)
Review: The Inn House Crew are well known instrumental reggae producers who have made Room In The Sky their regular home. Their second release this month is a tasty hook up with AJ Franklin, UK Principal and Vin Gordon. "Where You Gonna Run To" is a popping dub fleshed out with cavernous drums and bass that sit together perfectly. Synth details and hits spit out and horns drift to sooth your soul. The effervescing vocals version on the flip injects a dose of warmth to an already steamy cut. Another standout effort from this ever reliable crew.

Review: The Inn House Crew has been serving up the platters that matter on Room In The Sky long enough to have a firm following by now. Once again they bring rather melancholic vibes to this new one. "Madness Badness" feat. Vin Gordon is a flabby dub with pillow bass and rounded drums, but the trumpets that ring out are beautifully muted and sombre. Flip over for an alternative version that's more amped up and direct for those who are after something more energetic. Whichever side you go for, this is one you will want to add to your collection.

Cat: ALDBS 7009. Rel: 01 Oct 19
  1. Long Run (feat Ras Tavaris) (4:00)
  2. Dub Run (4:03)
Review: Alchemy Dubs have cooked up more heat here with a ninth 7" that is a collaboration between Ojah and Jamaican singer Ras Tavaris. "Long Run" is a live mixed, proudly analogue cut with a stepper rhythm overlaid by Tavaris' important lyric work that muses on plenty of contemporary issues. Some lively percussion adds character and a flip-side instrumental dub lays even more fantastic studio work. That this one comes in a hand-stamped, hand-numbered, thick custom sleeve and is limited to 500 units makes it all the more collectable.

  2. Ten Feet Tall (Winnie & Somow remix) (7:43)
Review: It's been four years since Fat Freddy's Drop's "Ten Feet Tall" and the ongoing remix series that joins the dots between the New Zealand outfit and the best beat makers in Berlin. Winnie & Somow are house and reggae aficionados who straddle that divide on a remix that has a rumbling bottom end and super silky lead vocal from Joe Dukie. As much as it makes you want to move, it also tugs at the heartstrings. LoYoTo then layer in endless reverb to their remake, which is invitingly cavernous and dubbed out as they rework Dukie's vocal into something more detached and blissed out.

  2. Young Lady (6:59)
Review: This one is a real sonic treasure. Already fetching some relatively high prices, it is just one of three releases that Trevor Sinclair - a different Trevor Sinclair to the one who played for England, presumably - is credited with. "Wgt Fuss & Fight" is classic roots material with echoing hits and wandering leads that are finished with some of his own buttery vocal work. "Young Lady" on the flip is another lovestruck ode to a woman that's couched in billowing bass and finished with some sweet knob twiddling.

  3. Rod Taylor - "Lonely Girl" (2:46)
  4. Rod Taylor - "Lonely Dub" (2:42)
Review: A digging session in our own archives has unearthed this sun-kissed and rootsy 12" from Rod Taylor and Leroy Smart. Originally released on the King Culture label it has become something of a sought after number that drips with Jamaican cool.
Smart, who appeared in the Rockers film with peers Gregory Isaacs and Jacob Miller, offers up the glorious "More Than a Million"; a cuddly dub that barley manages to move with its laidback hits and drums so deep. The b-side is taken care of by Taylor - "Lonely Girl", a gentle dub lovesong that seduces with its leads and twanging riffs. Both sides come with the requisite dubs to complete the set. A sweet addition to any collection.

Review: Although the titular track might have been somewhat spoiled by a certain TV advert, the rest of Gregory Isaacs' most well known album still stands up. Lazy reggae rhythms are permeated by sparkly synth work from Wally Badarou, which at the time was a brave and progressive move away from traditional reggae and toward the ensuing sound of dancehall. Isaac's own buttery, laid back musings are front and centre, crystal clear and delicate throughout, always complimented by dainty piano chords that sink you deep into a dreamworld. The production throughout is first class, too, making this a true classic.

Review: A true hot stepper and one of the best of its kind, this 1984 masterpiece from Ini Kamoze is heavy, real and authentic. It was actually Jamaican born artist Cecil Campbell's debut album and features spacious, slow motion dubs that invite you deep within their cavernous drums. The chattery percussion, echoing hits and loose percussion all make a real mark. "World-A-Music" has a beat fans of Damien Marley will recognise, and "General" features some of Campbells more vulnerable vocal work. For fans old and new, this is a perfect roots album with a unique perspective.

Review: Given Massive Attack's background, it was almost inevitable that they'd release a dub overhaul of one of their albums at one point. That time came in 1995, when British sound system legend Mad Professor - responsible for some of the greatest UK-made dub records of all time - put his distinctive twist on Protection. 21 years on, the set still sounds sublime: a radical translation that frequently bares only a passing resemblance to the Bristol band's original. It's packed with highlights, from the spaced-out, dub-house rework of "Spying Glass" ("I Spy"), to the ricocheting percussion hits and twinkling pianos of "Weather Storm (Cool Monsoon)", and creepy, delay-laden string surges of "Eternal Feedback (Sly)".

Review: Having not released anything for going on eight years, it's something of a surprise to see Pama International return to action. The all-star ska and reggae combo, whose line-up includes members of the Specials, Galliano and PWEI, amongst others, have decided to release a clutch of clear vinyl 7" singles all at the same time. "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" is typical of their output; an effortlessly sweet chunk of sun-kissed ska-soul fusion that sounds like it could have been recorded in Kingston, Jamaica at the turn of the sixties. Flipside "Gasoline", meanwhile, is a tasty instrumental reggae jam laden with bold Hammond organ motifs, jazzy guitar solos and heavyweight bass.

Review: Pressure Sounds' latest release takes us back to 1976 and "Wall Of Jerusalem", a soulful reggae album by The Prophets that included production from both Yabby You (the band's lynchpin and lead vocalist) and dub mixer King Tubby. The album is something of a roots classic, with Yabby You's seductive, soul-fired vocal numbers being joined by delay-laden heavy dub revisions by King Tubby. You'll find the original set on LP 1, with the second being dedicated to alternate versions, previously unreleased tracks recorded in the same period, and alternate dubs that have lain dormant in Yabby You's archives for the best part of 40 years.

Review: In the early 1970s, a new musical art form emerged on the streets of Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago from the social unrest of the time. A group of young guys started to combine poetry with drumming and created the musical art form that is known today as Rapso. Lutalo 'Brother Resistance' Masimba was one of the pioneers of this movement and his 1987 anthem "Tonight Is de Night" receives a much-needed reissue here on Cree. There's much to enjoy on this 12" - we're particularly loving the groovy "Rapso Space Dub" and funky steel drum riddims of "Crucial Decision ('92 Version)". This is total spiritual life music.

Review: Geneva might not even be in the first 10 cities you name when it comes to dub talent, but the Bongo Joe label has been quietly trying to change that over the course of more than 40 releases. The latest comes from new local band Amami and fuse dub with afrobeat and dancehall to make for something refreshingly original. Raphael Anker (Imperial Tiger Orchestra), Gabriel Ghebrezghi (Ghostape, Tapes Adventure, Uberreel) and Ines Mouzoune make up the outfit and they explore dusty trap style dub on the opener, hyperdriven afro dub on "Fast" and a more stripped back rhythm on "Giant". "Ivory" is a funky number with a summery vibe while closing cut "Super Shaggy" stomps hard.

Review: With a drowsy, loved-up trademark sound that sits somewhere between the beach, bedroom and the dancefloor, Canada's Yu Su is a great fit for Music From Memory offshoot Second Circle. The resultant EP is arguably her strongest to date. She begins by enlisting the help of Michelle Helene Mackenzie, who provides a drowsy spoken word vocal on the ultra-deep and starry brilliance of "Little Birds, Moonbath". Fellow Vancouver residents Pender Street Steppers lend a hand on the deep and picturesque shuffle of "Tipu's Tiger", while "Of Yesterday (Instrumental)" sees Yu Su wrap meandering synth solos atop hazy chords and gentle tribal drums. Elsewhere, "The Ultimate Which Manages The World" is dubbed-out and effortlessly Balearic, while "Words Without Sound" offers up more intricate hand percussion and some sparse electronic elements.

It's the lead cry on the a-side of this new 7" from eight-piece band Christel & The Goldmaster AllStars who have a bold two piece horn section driving along this fusion of ska, reggae and rock which was first recorded in 1998 and has recently been unearthed. The flipside version has sci-fi studio effects and warped synths layered in for extra trippiness.

Review: Renowned studio wizard Prince Fatty finally follows 2015's "The Clone Theory" album with a second studio long player jam packed with heavy dubs and top notch guests. "In The Viper's Shadow" is a real hotlist of dub kingpins with the likes of Tippa Irie, George Dekker, Earl 16 and Horseman all contributing to a melting pot of sounds that spans multiple eras and influences. Many of these tracks have been popular during Prince Fatty's live shows over the last couple of years, from the soul infused cover of the Temptations' "Get Ready" to the sun kissed and lumpy drums and endless reverb of "Everything Crash". Timeless stuff.

  1. Dennis Brown - "Blessed Are The Men (The Pill)" (6:33)
  2. Junior Delgado - "Cry, Cry" (6:32)
Review: The influence of The Crown Prince of Reggae, as Bob Marley used to call him, still looms large over the genre 20 years after he passed. The latest reminder of his considerable talent comes from this gem Dennis made with Jux produced by Niney in 1977. "Blessed Are The Men (The Pill)" is unusually long for a dub track at over six minutes, but it sinks you into it throughout via the cuddly groove, sliding snares, hanging guitar twangs and buttery vocals. Flip over for Junior Delgado's "Cry, Cry", an impassioned anthem with plenty of blazing potential.

None Shall Escape The Judgement
None Shall Escape The Judgement (coloured vinyl 12")
Cat: AR 12029. Rel: 05 Sep 19
  1. Earl Zero - "None Shall Escape The Judgement" (6:10)
  2. Soul Syndicate - "None Shall Escape The Judgement" (version) (2:54)
  3. Earl Zero & Soul Syndicate - "None Shall Escape The Judgement" (extended) (6:51)
Review: Earl Zero is a foundational figure in the roots reggae scene of '70s Jamaica. Working with producer Bunny Lee on this self-penned piece, it was originally given to the more established singer Johnny Clarke in 1975 and went on to become a hit. It wasn't until 1980 that Earl's own version came out on Epiphany Records and saw similar success. "None Shall Escape The Judgement" is a crucial cut that rides on a higgledy-piggledy rhythm section as bass twangs and rim shots peel off the groove. Earl's buttery, blissed out and heartfelt delivery soars up top next to celebratory trumpets to seal the deal in style.

Lead The Way
Cat: S1R 001. Rel: 08 Oct 19
  1. Rapha Pico & The Signal One Band - "Lead The Way" (4:58)
  2. The Signal One Band - "Lead The Dub" (4:55)
Review: The Signal One Band formed in 2017 after a bunch of local regular session musicians linked up after meeting at Earth Works Studio in Amsterdam. Between them the gang has worked with big names from the worlds of ska, reggae and dubstep, and all this goes into a crucial melting pot that brews up the old and new, finished off with a warm vintage aesthetic. Their new label is minted with a rumbling, roots tune that has lush trumpets and billowing chords cushioning your daily grind. The dub on the flip is even fatter and perfectly easy to get lost in.
