A Way Back (3:07)
Review: Even before you hear the first beat, there is something incredibly exit about seeing the names Male - a pioneering beat master and pivotal figure in the early emergence of the dubstep sound - with Joe Armon-Jones, talented musician and master keys man. A Way Back comes on Aquarii, Armon-Jones's own label with him on keys and synths, Mala on drums and bass and Maxwell Owin featuring on 'Oh Lord'. It brings back memories of the golden dubstep years with cavernous bass and heavy weight drums all finished to perfection with Armon-Jones top lines.

Melbourne Douglas - "Wheel & Come Again" (3:16)
Review: The Original Gravity label's Reggae Dynamite series sure is packed full of dance floor heat. This fourth volume turns up the temperature once more, starting with Dave Barker's 'Move It On Now' with spoken word mic work over a guitar laced riddim. Woodfield Rd Allstars bring plenty of big horn energy and hints of ska to their 'San Salvario Stomp' then appear again on the flip with the organ-lead sounds of mid tempo wobbler 'Norwegian Wood'. Melbourne Douglas completes the picture with 'Wheel & Come Again', another raw as you like and classic sound.

Review: France and Jamaica collide on this new 12" from Brother Sound, which is now up to release number three and is managing to maintain the good early standard it set for itself. J.A. legend Max Romeo is in top form on vocals with Brother Sound stepping up for the backing and production. 'Roll It Up' is a high-speed and hard-hitting dub that hurries you into shape-shifting while the vocals add extra pressure. It comes as two other mixes then the flipside has the slower and more meandering melodies and unbalanced sounds of 'The Story' which also comes as an extended mix.

Review: Philadelphia's own Fadda Medina and Medina International serve up this mighty fine 10" for all fans of lover's rock. It is Earl Cunningham who kicks things off on 'Frienemy,' a tune that proves his voice is in top shape. Michael Palmer then comes next with the yearning heartache sounds of 'Where Did I Go Wrong,' and Tasha T keeps tugging at the heart strings with Feeling the Pain (Sufferer).' Cosmic Shuffling - "Merry-Go-Round" (2:53)
Review: The Liquidator Music crew have been putting out classic Jamaican rhythms ice the mid-cities and still goes strong. This is an all new one from Jamaican act Roy Ellis who sings over his backing band, Cosmic Shuffing, from Switzerland. They are acclaimed in ska and rock steady circles for good reason and help bring these tunes to life. 'Shine Your Light On Me' is an easy going roller with lo-fi drums and dusty riffs that hook you in while Ellis does his work up top. 'Merry-Go-Round' then cuts loose on a summery and swirling vibe with conversational lead trumpets and natty chords.

Jah Walton aka Joseph Cotton opens up with 'Ganja Man' which pays homage to the weed smokers over fat drums. Goody Gap's 'I Smoke Weed' is another ode to the magical green herb and Michael 'Megahbass' Fletcher then steps up with a more stripped back and percussive dub. Ras Ranger, Ed Cubitt & Kodjovi Kush then feature on a trio of B-side gems.

Macca Dread - "Mission Dub" (3:35)
Review: The Mission Impossible theme is truly iconic but we never thought we'd hear it getting reworked inna reggae style. But that's exactly what we have here from Jackhaya who have enlisted four artists to add their own spin to the tense original. Jerry Johnson kicks off with a superbly laid-back, sax-laced sound full of sexual overtones. Brother Sound's 'Impossible Dub' is a digi-dub with a more muted feel and heavier low end. On the flip is a tropical and steamy rework that sticks more faithfully to the original from Benyah while Macca Dread's 'Mission Dub' is another cavernous one full of echo and reverb.

Review: Ohm Records once again come through with the heat, doing the utmost justice to our favourite letter of the Greek alphabet with four slapping deep dubby, subby, wubby tech house cuts. We highly recommend Anton Kubikov's 'Azimut' and Module One's 'Inside The Chamber', both of which chuck echoic on beds of great scaping pads, like hallucinatory angels skirting across heat-hazed horizons.

Patrick Andy - "Words Of The Wise" (3:22)
Review: No Bad Vibes is not only our mantra for the year ahead, but the name of this heart warming wedge of roots and lovers rock from Macka B and Patrick Andy. It's a brand new cut rather than a reissue which is what you might expect if you didn't know, such is the authenticity of its deep cut grooves and the buttery smoothness of the vocal from Jamaican-British reggae singer and musician Christopher McFarlane. The rhythm comes from Vivian Jackson's 'Walls Of Jerusalem' and on the flip is 'Word of The Wise' with a more gnarly vocals and plenty of well-picked and earthy guitar riffs.

Review: Hardcore dub heads will know that Mafia & Fluxy's 'Shocking Skank' was first dropped back in 2020 on this River Bank Records label. It's a popular cut from the label heads aka the prolific production duo of drummer Dave and keyboard player Leroy. They work in Jamaica and the UK and have put out a rather mad 27 albums up to now. This gem has warrior leads and wobbling low ends with some bright, light-emitting chords that get you standing tall. Mix 2 on the flip is a subtle tweak.

Review: The Sound of Thunder label looks back to a deep roots tune by Freddy McKay here. It is a recut version with the French singer and guitar player Yohann Minkoff aka Major Yo. The rhythm is the fine work of The SOA Band and the whole thing was produced by Sound of Thunder with OnlyRoots. The a-side is cheery vibe with buttery vocals and natty chord work. Chakatack's 'Worldwide Dub' is slower, deeper, more roomy. Both of these are vital dub cuts for plenty of summer deployment on big sound systems.

This is also a historic first repress of the rare and extremely fine 'Good Time Rock.' A hard to find, much coveted tune, it is a rocking dub rhythm that has never before been on 7" vinyl. The spaced out and heady originals 'Next Step' and 'Next Dub', are backed by two further gems in 'The Ark' and 'Conspiracy Dub'. His impeccable back catalogue is full of as many lesser known treasures as it is stone cold classic hits. Just in time for Christmas, JAD has put together a season delight from the vocal star with 'Selassie Is The Chapel' appearing on the A-side of this new 7". Their fresh sound came with conscious and uplifting lyrics and came with an extra seal of approval thanks to production by John Bradbury of the Specials. The band played all over the world, had tune synched to major Hollywood films and dined deals with Dr Martens. Once again, Booty Hall is involved this time facing off against Carla Marshall, a known talent from the roots and reggae world. The resulting sounds start with 'All Night Champion', which has raw and dusty breaks, old school stabs and funky drums topped off with a mix of early hip-hop vocals and soulful coos. 'Champinstrumental' on the flip cuts back the vocals to a more direct dance floor instrumental.

Review: It's time to do the Harlem Shuffle once more here and lock into the rhythms of Ray Martell. His 'She Caught The Train' is something of an early reggae classic that now makes its way onto 7" vinyl for the first time. It was originally released in 1970 on the Trojan sub-label Joe in the UK and then rose to fame once more as a cover version from UB40 in 1983. The original has been on a load of compilations but has never stood alone on wax. When it came first as a single it was backed with 'Tea House From Emperor Roscoe' by Dice The Boss but here the label adds a super rare Ray Martell song in the form of 'Cora'.

The featured guest here is a massive name in the Jamaican dancehall scene and a sample of his voice was the starting point for this cut. This new 7" from Max Iss & The Minions (which is the latest alias for the ever prolific label boss Neil Anderson, complete with a session toaster in tow) offers two boss rhythms. The sound harks back to the reggae of the late sixties and is punctuated with U-Roy-style shout-outs. The former was the opening and title track from the Jamaican reggae singer's 1996 album. It is impassioned lovers' rock with his yearning and vulnerable vocals over clean reggae rhythms, with bright chords and lumpy drums and bass. It could well be a reissue of a long-lost classic, such is the authentic nature of the sounds and rhythms but no, this is all-new heat featuring Ansel Cridland with Sly Dunbar and Jerry Johnson. Their snaking and hissing leads and meandering bass are the foundations for the freeform vocals. As you would expect, on the reverse side you will find a sick dub that goes heavy on echo and reverb.

It's a divisive album which captures Suggs' Camden Town likely lads in a period of transition as the 80s wore on and musical styles shifted. Moving on from the chirpy ska of their early days they moved into a more polished pop sound which landed them a billing on NME's 'Greatest Albums Of All Time' just weeks after its release. With the singles 'Uncle Sam' and 'Sweetest Girl' nestled amongst some of the bands' most introspective tracks (see 'Mad Not Mad') it's an important part of the Madness legacy, handily repressed on 180 gm wax for your listening pleasure.

Of course, Black Ark Studio boss Lee Scratch Perry produced all the songs on the album and included amongst them are mega-hits such as 'Sun Is Shining,' 'Kaya' and 'Keep On Moving!'

Review: Bob Marley & The Chineke! Orchestra marked the 60th anniversary of Jamaican Independence with a special concert that showcased Marley's most famous songs all recorded with new instrumentation and orchestration. Trevor Nelson presented the project and he tapped up Skip Marley, an inheritor of his family's famous musical legacy and who made his debut UK performance for this concert which was recorded for this album on Island Records. British singer-songwriter JP Cooper plus Jamaican born and Birmingham based soul, gospel and R&B legend Ruby Turner also featured.

Group Four (Security Forces dub) (8:07)
Review: Way back in 1998 when Massive Attack's career-defining "Mezzanine" was first released, legendary dub technician Mad Professor cooked up some radical reworking. They now get their first official release alongside dubs of two tracks that never actually made it onto the album - Metal Banshee: a dub version of "Superpredators" which was a cover of Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Metal Postcard", and "Wire", which was actually recorded for the film "Welcome to Sarajevo". Wild effects, plenty of knob twiddling and oodles of reverb define this freaky late night collection and mark another essential release in the catalogue of the already legendary Mad Professor.

Review: Matisyahu hosts the annual Festival of Light towards the end of the year and it was there on December 22 back in 2022 that this Live in Brooklyn album was recorded. As well as featuring plenty of live takes on his own much-loved gems like 'One Day' and 'King Without A Crown', he also tackles a few tasteful covers that were penned written by his son Laivy, and which they performed in unison. There was also a visual recording of this show made and available to find online, which is well worth doing while you sink into the sounds that came at the end of a 15-stop tour.

This is one of his landmark albums and a titan of the classic reggae and ska scene. Romeo himself is still active and is in fact about to embark on a final live tour to mark his retirement while also serving up a new album alongside it. This one came back in 1974 and this is the first reissue of an underground classic that hasthe legendary Bunny Lee on production.

Review: Mikey Dread was a legend of reggae as a producer, DJ and singer, who gained international fame for working with The Clash on 'Bankrobber' and mixing dub versions for their Black Market Clash and Sandinista! albums. Through his Dread At The Controls label he released reams of incredible dub and roots reggae himself, with World War III surely one of the highlights. With the Roots Radics as the backing band and the likes of Earl Sixteen and Watty Burnett on backing vocals, the cast of characters is steeped in reggae's golden era, and sure enough the sound is as good as you'd expect. This welcome reissue comes on yellow vinyl - a beam of sunshine as uplifting as the riddims carved into the grooves.

Review: Another one of the very many top draw On-U Sound albums from days gone by gets a reissue here. 1984's Warzone by The Missing Brazilians (a project led by label founder Adrian Sherwood in collab with vocalist Annie Anxiety, members of African Head Charge and Dub Syndicate as well as various others from the On-U Sound family) is the only album the collective put out. It's a grimy mix of dub, industrial, electro, experimental, reggae and electronic sounds with famously abrasive textures. This reissue brings it back to the fore with a great mastering job that demands loud plays and close inspection.

Review: Count Ossie is one of the true forefathers of Jamaican music as we know it, setting a template for the spiritual, drum-focused sound of Nyabinghi as a musical extension of Rastafarian religious practice. From an outsider community in Wareika Hill, Ossie and his fellow players were slowly integrated into Jamaican music culture and went on to record singles for the likes of Coxsone Dodd, but it was with the formation of The Mystic Revelations Of Rastafari and the recording of Grounation in 1973 that Ossie cemented his legacy. Now Soul Jazz are reissuing this landmark album as a triple-12" pressing with a bonus 7" and accompanying magazine - all the better to understand the context and meaning of this incredible work.

Review: The late great Muslimgauze has one of the most unique sounds in electronic music, even now, many year son. His fusion of the electronic and the ethnic, the experimental and the noisy is in a class of one. Return To The City Of Djinn came first back in 1999 and is the seance of two collabs between John Bolloten aka The Rootsman and Bryn Jones aka Muslimgauze. It is a mash up of The Rootsman's Into The Light and 52 Days to Timbuktu albums with added Arab cultural references from Jones. There are cut up loops, glassy effects, dub drums and well rod vocal fragments that make for an atmospheric sound track to a stroll through a busy Eastern city.
