Dallas (4:46)
Carousel (4:59)
Review: Le Disques Bongo Joe's joint release with Calico Discos was a superb EP back in 2020 and it still bangs today, hence the reissue. It offers up four fresh cuts from L'Eclair, a self-styled "exogroove post-internet" six-piece with three must-check albums to their name. Musically, the four tracks offer a breezy, summery and mixed-up blend of Tony Allen style polyrhythms, tropical funk guitars, languid synthesizer sounds, psychedelic electronics and copious amounts of mind-altering dub effects. Our favourites include the low-slung deep Afro-psychedelia of 'Dallas', the rousing, horn-heavy EP opener 'Cebando' (a future dancefloor staple for sure), and the Moog-laden sunrise dreaminess of 'Atlantis'.

Review: It's time to touch base with Errol and Alex Rita's Touching Bass here as the small but already great-sounding label hits release number eight with this fine Babylon Shuffle release. All six tracks from Last Nubian and Geneva's Sweet Fruity Brunch blend the sounds of inner city London with deep house and broken beats, starting with the party vibes of 'Call Yu Out'. 'In Da Morning/Shaka' (feat Achante) then has lithe and wispy synths shimmering over metallic broken beats with great vocals adding soul and 'Mango In Da Parish' is a b-side highlight with its beautifully delicate house drums keeping the dancefloor afloat next to jazzy flutes.

Understand What Black Is (Dego & Kaidi instrumental mix) (3:58)
Review: Anyone with even the most rudimentary knowledge of hip-hop history will tell you that the roots of rapping can be traced back to the early '70s spoken word albums of The Last Poets. It's because of this that the collective's recent album, Understand What Black Is (their first for nearly two decades), was such a big deal. Here the title track is given the remix treatment. Mala handles the A-side, delivering vocal and instrumental passes that re-cast the track as a skanking, dub-wise excursion full of ricocheting electric piano notes and suitably heavy bass. 2000 Black main men Dego and Kaidi Tatham take a more up-tempo approach on the flip, wrapping the Poets conscious vocals and instrumentation around their own fizzing broken beat rhythms, jazz-funk chords and darting electronics.

Obf - "Green Dub" (3:14)
Review: Some fairly iconic roots and rubadub tracks from days gone by get fresh licks of paint here with this coming together of Thompson Sound and Dubquake Records. This is the second in a collaborative series of EPs and it features a fresh version of Sensimelia by a young Barrington Levy. The original was a real gem back in the '80s and like many hits of the time was recorded at the legendary Channel One studios. Further tunes 'The Herbs' and 'Green Dub' close out this ode to the cannabis flower and its therapeutic virtues. Word.

Roots Radics - "Round Eight" (3:21)
Review: The man known as the 'mellow canary' is Barrington Levy, a legendary Jamaican reggae and dancehall artist who was born in Geel, Belgium. This one is a stonier cold classic of his from 1980 that gets a welcome reissue here. 'Black Heart Man' has lively drums and wooden hits, twisted guitar riffs and noodling bass with Barry's lovely versos up top. On the flip is a fine dub from Roots Radics that takes the tune into psyched and dubbed out Scientist territory. It was produced by Henry 'Junjo' Lawes and recorded at Channel One.

Long Time Again (4:41)
Soul Steppin' (3:14)
Review: The Liquidators is a streetpunk band from Santa Cruz. Back in the nineties they roamed around the local scene and recorded some tunes that are well worth hearing. This 7" on Pirates Press features two compositions that sit right up there with the best you can expect from this genre. 'Long Time Again' is a lo-fi ska and reggae fusion that swaggers back and forth with 60s guitar riffs and a dusty sense of soul. It's beautiful. 'Soul Steppin' is a much more upbeat and dance floor focussed tune with punchy street soul and another great set of male and female vocals. This particular 45rpm comes with its own comic book to enjoy while you get lost in the music.

Review: Soul Of Anbessa has got a very special release on their hands here with the words of French poet Charles Baudelaire's "Chant d'automne" delivered in buttery style by Max Livio's voice. It sits atop a rockers' rhythm that will remind you of Channel One sounds and takes you on a lazy jaunt through a hot and steamy day in downtown Kingston with plenty of standout horns. On the flip The 18th Parallel steps up with 'Flowers Of Evil Dub' which has extra heavy dub vibes as mixed by Roberto Sanchez.

Ruff Cut - "Love & Only Love" (version) (4:19)
Review: Tony Ruffcutt is a legend in the reggae scene and has been since the 70s. The label named after him has now got the right to recut a classic from that era, 'Love And Only Love' by Fred Locks. The original is a full-flavoured rhythm with nice wooden hits and brassy horns accompanying the fat-bottomed low end while the vocal is smooth up top. A dub mix and then a super dub adds even more weight to the low end and on the flipside is another roots icon in the form of Prince Alla who adds fresh lyrics to 'Man On Board'. The various overdubs and vocals were recorded in Jamaica with mixdowns taken care of by the legendary Caveman.

Review: While there is barely any solid information as to the identity and ideals behind the Lokal Affair project, this is the sort of material that speaks for itself, and one which has successfully tapped into the current state of affairs in the electronic game. This badass EP lands on the increasingly relevant Boomarm Nation, and carries three killer infusions of cryptic pseudo house and ethnic rhythms for the more open-minded DJ. If there was such a thing as 'small-room tools' then these would be it; watch out for the Alter Echo remix on the flip, too, as it's a rather voracious affair for the dance. Big ol' tip here!

The Sweetest Dub (6:16)
Review: Soundway Records' marketing team recently described Lord Echo's hook-up with Mara TK, "Sweetest Meditation", as a "high-rolling summertime opus". It's certainly rather good and well worthy of a dedicated 12" single release. The wonderful, jazz-flecked, vibraphone-heavy, dub-disco style original version is featured alongside a brand new Black Ark style instrumental dub (appropriately titled "The Sweetest Dub") which is almost worth the entrance money on its own. There are two fresh remixes, too, from old pal Julien Dyrne and the Lord himself. His "Club Mix", completed on a recent European tour, pushes it further towards leisurely vocal deep house territory whilst retaining many of the elements that made the original version such a sun-kissed summer treat.

They have been turning it out at a steady rate recently on labels like Oscarson but mostly Flower. Following a couple of standout 7"s in 'Tripping Out' and 'Let Some Love In' already this year comes 'Time Trip.' Review: Some undeniably classic reggae here on this reissue from Duke. It is a red hot double sider that was originally recorded in 1968 by the one and only dub legend Lee "Scratch" Perry and taken from a solo 7" box set that was assembled a few years ago by the name of People Funny Boy. The A-side What A Botheration' is a rhythm from his legendary band The Upsetters with Perry's typically esoteric vocal style up top. This time it is alongside J.A. legends The Viceroys, who provide some super steamy and loved-up vocals over a spacious, roomy and atmospheric dub that is simple, economical yet effective, with some lush strings providing a melancholic hook. Review: In 1973, and with the U-Roy-inspired 'deejay style' reggae craze at its height, toasters Dennis 'Alcapone' Smith and Delroy Petgrave AKA Lizzy joined forces with engineer Byron Smith to produce an album of brand-new songs based on Treasure Isle's vast archive of Duke Reid rocksteady and early roots reggae 'riddims'. Soul To Soul: DJ's Choice is undoubtedly a landmark reggae album, though this is the first time it's been available on CD. In true Doctor Bird style, this edition of the album has been expanded considerably, with the original set's 12 tracks being joined by 16 further Alcapone and Lizzy tracks from the Treasure Isle catalogue, including plenty of cuts that have never previously been released digitally and a wealth of dub style 'versions' from the flipsides of Jamaican singles.

Review: Honest Jon's assembles a crack team of dub heads here for an experimental foray into the outer edges of the genre. Holy Tongue kicks off with three versions of 'Dey Sey' with its darkened electric and soot black dub sounds echoing through a desolate urban landscape in the dead of night. Beatrice Dillon's '2020' then takes a totally different approach with icy and glistening synths over more stripped back and crisp rhythms and percussive patterns and then there is a tribal approach to Caprices mix of Lamin Fofana while Itinerant goes for something more cosmic and airy. LABOUR's 'Etu Keur Gui' closes out with a pair of clattering reworks to cause real dance floor destruction.

Review: Given that he's been active musically since the turn-of-the-80s - most famously as part of Big Audio Dynamite - it's rather surprising to find that Outta Sync is Don Letts' debut solo album He's pulled out all the stops for the occasion, not only joining forces with dub artist Gaudi (who co-wrote and produced the album), but also a swathe of guests including reggae vocalist Hollie Cook, his old pal Terry Hall, Zoe Devlin Love and his daughter, Honor Letts. While there are plenty of nods to Letts' varied musical tastes, it is naturally rooted in weighty dub reggae rhythms, with the other constant being Letts' own spoken word vocals, which generally offer reflections on the Black British experience and his fears for the future. It may have taken decades, but he's finally delivered an artist album fitting of his legendary status.

That was back in 1979 in Jamaica and was in the form of an uncredited collaboration with Captain Sinbad on 51 Storm for Sugar Minott's Black Roots label. Because of copyright restrictions, this version has a new name that differs from the original House In Session but the tunes are all the same and pack just as much of a heavyweight sound. Thing superbly sun-kissed island rhythms with plenty of percussive prickliness and expressive keys. The deeper vibes of 'African Zulu (Sounds Only)' and romantic rhythms of 'Everybody Needs Love' are special indeed.
