Two Weeks: Classics/Ska

Cat: EM 08. Rel: 20 Nov 19
  1. The Master Blenda (5:09)
  2. The Master Blenda (Time Cow dub) (5:11)
Review: Nick "Bobby Blackbird" Dean is the Equinoxx producer behind "The Master Blenda" - a new instrumental that nearly never was: in 2015, he was involved in a near fatal car crash that left him hospitalised for three months. Grammy-nominated band Raging Fyah, horn maestro Stingwray and keys legend Franklyn "Bubbler" Wahl all feature on the A side - an upbeat ska anthem with big leads and a high feel good factor. Exile Di Brave takes over the flipside dub, which is an exercise in fantastic studio trickery and oodles of reverb. This is a sweet new 10" from this ever more essential label, especially as it is one that might never have been.

Outstanding (reissue) (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: AOTN 12007. Rel: 05 Dec 19
  1. Outstanding (5:54)
  2. Out (dub) (5:39)
Review: Athens of the North have turned their attention to a very special series of roots and lovers tunes that have been put together with the help of several different people in the scene. This one is a reissue of Al Charles' take on the Gap Band's "Outstanding". It's a swaggering number with extra bass weight layered in beneath the soaring vocal and some lush future-retro chord work. The dub is a more playful affair filled with space and time bending effects and laden with echo. Brilliant work as ever from this Scottish label.

  1. Alton Ellis - "I'm Still In Love" (3:27)
  2. The Soul Vendors - "Just A Bit Of Soul" (3:06)
Review: Alton Ellis' "I'm Still In Love" is one of Jamaica's most famous songs. It has a rich history, too, that was the inspiration for Althea and Donna's 1997 smash "Uptown Top Ranking" and here it gets a loud-cut 12" pressing that allows it to soar. It's a track full of longing, with dusty keys and a natty bassline finished off with gorgeous vocals. The flipside houses the Soul Vendors' "Just A Bit Of Soul" featuring Jackie Mittoo. It's a more upbeat ditty with bumpier drums and jazz flecked keys to get you grooving.

Back Together Again (reissue) (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: AOTN 12008. Rel: 05 Dec 19
  1. Jean & Trevor - "Back Together" (6:37)
  2. IMF Players - "Dub Again" (6:35)
Review: It's back to 1988 as Athens Of The North reissues the impossibly good "Back Together Again" from Jean & Trevor, a golden lovers rock classic that is actually a cover version of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway's original. It's a gorgeously hazy cut with some pretty advanced-at-the-time synths and effects on top of an organic rhythm section and sliding guitar work. IMF Players then offer up "Dub Again" on the flip which delves deeper into dub science with equally compelling results.

Organ's Melody (7" + insert)
Cat: OVE 70134. Rel: 25 Nov 19
  1. Organ's Melody (4:02)
  2. After The Rain (3:23)
Review: Mute Beat was a big rotating assembly of musicians who released some seminal works from the mid eighties onwards. "Organ's Melody" from 1987 is a particularly big bit of stepper's gold with tooting horn leads and swagger, deep swinging drums that cannot fail to get you on the move. It's become a pricey, sought after gem and is backed here with the much more downbeat and melancholic "After The Rain" which has sombre chords and drums that sink you into a reverie. Great stuff.

  1. Baba Roots (2:50)
  2. 150 Seconds (2:33)
Review: The Slackers are a legendary ska outfit for good reason: they've put out more than 20 albums and countless singles across a fine career that dates all the way back to 1991. Now they're back on Names You Can Trust with a pair of irresistible cuts. "Baba Roots" is a feel good and swaggering ska tune with sliding bass and great lead horns that bring the sunshine. "150 Seconds" on the flip is a slower and steadier tune with laidback horn leads that are more loved up and unhurried.

Easier To Love (reissue) (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: AOTN 12009. Rel: 05 Dec 19
  1. Sonia - "Easier To Love" (5:48)
  2. Earth & Stone - "That's The Way You Feel" (4:43)
Review: From their base all the way up in Edinburgh, Athens Of The North have single handedly reintroduced a whole world of amazing soul, funk and disco sounds over the last few years. Some are well known classics that have been long out of print, some are gems that were missed first time round. Next up is a one sided ska 7" from Sonia that has been remastered and reissued for the first time since its original release. A firm favourite with roots lovers, this version of "Easier To Love" got a play by Floating Points on his NTS show and so immediately soared in popularity, and it's easy to see why.

  5. People Get Ready (4:18)
  6. Lively Up Yourself (4:10)
  7. Is This Love? (3:53)
  8. Some Woman Must Cry (3:16)
Review: There isn't much backstory to this new one from Spanish label Metal Bastard Enterprise. They've pull together various unnamed artists to pay tribute to Bob Marley in various weird and wonderful ways - hymnal remakes with electric Rhodes chords and big rock riffs, live sounding cover versions and various other reworkings of the reggae legend's biggest tunes from "Get Up Stand Up" to "I Shot The Sheriff" to "Is This Love?". The music sounds modern, crisp and fresh, and certainly puts a different spin on these tried and tested classics.

  16. Frenk Dublin - "Statement" (5:14)
Review: Bass lovers unite: Moonshine have put together a seriously weighty collection of dub, digi, dancehall and plenty in between and served it up on three loud and proud slabs of vinyl here. There is a crisp and contemporary feel to most of the tracks, from the shiny horn leads of D-Operation Drop's "Lockdown", the future-ska of Halcyonic & G Roots meets Digid's "Enchanted Dub" to the flute laced fun of heavy stomper of Kandee's "Apu Taita Waira". Light one up, sink back into the sofa, and soak up these seriously slick sounds.
