The Road Is Rough
  1. Justin Hinds & The Dominoes - "The Road Is Rough" (2:45)
  2. Tommy McCook & The Supersonics - "Look Away" (instrumental) (3:03)
Review: For those with major gaps in their ska, rocksteady and reggae collections, Treasure Isle's ongoing reissue series of seven-inch singles is a godsend. The Arthur 'Duke' Reid-founded label's latest must-have missive is a strong double-header. On side A you'll find "The Road Is Rough", a hazy and quietly soulful rocksteady gem from the prolific (and hugely successful) vocal group Justin Hinds and the Dominoes. The ear-pleasing musical backing on that number comes from Treasure Isle house band Tommy McCook and the Supersonics, an outfit that gets a chance to shine over on the flipside. Instrumental number "Look Away" is superb, with the band layering bittersweet horn lines and melancholic piano solos over a rock solid rocksteady riddim.

Nuh Skin Up
Cat: 060181 1102619. Rel: 14 Aug 20
  1. Nuh Skin Up (7:23)
  2. Felt We Felt The Strain (6:36)
Review: Keith Hudson's Nuh Skin Up is the dub companion to his 1979 vocal album, From One Extreme to Another, and is often talked about in hugely hushed tones. It is well removed from what you might expect of a record record in Jamaican during that time and two lead cuts for it are presented here. Swampy, earthy dub is the order of the day on "Nuh-uh Skin Up" with wiry synths extended off into space. It's futuristic still today, and the flip is an even slower, more spaced out dub with tape hiss, distant pad and gently riffs all taking you to another head space entirely.

Miracle Of Love (warehouse find)
  1. Devon Russell - "Miracle Of Love" (3:55)
  2. High Times Players - "Miracle Of Love" (version) (4:18)
Review: Even in this internet age where you can find out pretty much anything about anyone, Devon Barrant Russell's story remains much of a mystery. Bits of info are known about his life and recording career, but there are also huge gaps. What we do know is that he worked with High Times Players in 1984 on a full length, but then never again according to discogs. Despite that, this tune isn't on that album, so who knows where and when it was recorded. It's a warehouse find from a recent stock take and fuses a sentimental soul sound with blissful 80s reggae, R&B and roots vibes. It's a lovely little tune, too.

  10. I Got The Needle (2:36)
Review: You can't overestimate the importance of The Heptones in the evolution of Jamaican music, after they defined the transition from ska to rocksteady and on to reggae. This album, "Back On Top", captures the band in the early '80s, when they had reached an international audience after working with Lee 'Scratch' Perry and releasing on Island Records. By this point they were back producing themselves, creating a perfect spanning sweet ballads and upbeat skankers, not to mention a cover of The Beatles' "Yesterday". Lovingly repressed on 180 gram red vinyl, this is a welcome reissue of an album that's been tricky to get hold of for some time, from one of the all time great reggae acts.

Review: Jamaican ska vocalist Justin Hines was one of the many popular jewels on Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label. He often worked with the Dominoes backing singers and their first album, reissued here by Music On Vinyl, was reportedly a firm favourite of Bob Marley. Pure roots at its finest and straight from the mid-seventies, this is feel good music that brims with warmth and earthy vibes. It's a celebration of dreadlock culture, the beauty of the Jamaican motherland and a fine reflection of the horizontal pace of life out in the Caribbean.
