Review: Original Gravity welcomes Junior Dell & The D-Lites for this reggae and dub-style rework of the famous party anthem 'Jump Around.' It has big ska horns and a low-slung swagger that is topped off with some fine mic work and full patois verses as well as the main vocal cry. It's sure to indeed get people jumping up and around in all new ways. The b-side of the 45 rpm is Prince Deadly's 'Rock The Lawn' version which is more lazy and dubby, with even rawer horns. A fun 7" for sure.

Review: Sometimes known as Inokasira Rangers, Park Rangers are a Japanese band who have spent much of the last decade releasing inspired but unlikely instrumental reggae covers of massive rock, pop and disco hits. This 7" single boasts two of their most popular covers, starting with a ridiculously cheery and almost hilariously cheeky version of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. Built around a 1960s style rocksteady riddim, it's instantly recognisable thanks to the band's choice to track the tune of Cobain's lead vocal (which naturally isn't present) with a Hammond organ solo. On the flip you'll find a deep reggae-disco cover of Kool & The Gang classic 'Summer Madness'; it's good, but nowhere near as fine as the surprising A-side.

Review: This 12" on Kalita marks first ever official reissue of the highly sought after Michael Paul reggae-soul-disco gem 'Reggae Music.' It is something of a megabit that never was after first coming on the New York-based Revolver Records. Since then it has been hard to find, and even if you do find a copy, many are said to have some real sound quality issues. Either way it is now a bit of a grail for a certain sort of DJ so to have it here, remastered and nice and loud, is big news. As well as the languid and steamy original, there is a killer dub version on the flip.

Review: This rather good "45" may sound vintage, but it's brand spanking new. It sees long-serving Brighton beat-maker and dub enthusiast Richie Phoe join forces with vocalist Kassia Zermon and Resonators' sax player Leroy Horns to serve up a rather good cover of Jacob Miller classic 'Baby I Love You So'. The A-side vocal version is a genuine treat, with Zermon's soulful vocals working in perfect unison with Phoe's hybrid roots reggae/lovers rock style backing track. As you'd expect, it comes accompanied by a deliciously spaced-out, echo-laden flipside dub. This showcases more of Leroy Horns' fine saxophone solos as well as selected snippets of Zermon's vocal.

Review: The Phoenix City All-stars follow up their 2 Tone Gone Ska album with their vibrant ska take on the Rolling Stones classic '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.' This unique cover comes with seductive brass sounds and big horn stabs, all with a lively and dynamic ska rhythm that cannot fail together you on your toes. On the flip is 'Play With Fire', another tune taken from their Skatisfaction album back in 2014. Like the a-side, it has been a big tune for years with its buoyant brass, swaggering drums and hypnotic lead horns. Two perfect party tunes for sure.

Review: "Better Herring" has become a big money tune from the Pioneers and it was last available as part of the mega-comp "The Story Of Trojan Records". Before that, the title tune had only been released in England on 7" on Attack in 1970 under the Soul Directions alias but thanks to Boss Records, this lo-fi bit of ska and retro soul is now available to DJs and dancers once more. "Mama Look Deh" on the flip is a much more laid back tune, with a happier outlook, gorgeous guitar riffs that seem to grow ever quicker and tight drum playing to get you moving.

Review: Jamaican reggae / rocksteady vocal trio The Pioneers hear two classics of theirs reissued: 'Some Having A Bawl' and 'Whip Them'. First released in 1968 by Joe Gibbs' Amalgamated Records, the tracks are raw, melodic social anthems, with the A-sider musing: "no time for fun, 'cos we're on the run", deliberating on the tearful unjust plight of some, and the unfair delight of others (note the clever entendre "having a bawl"). The B, meanwhile, iroincally likens singer-songwriting to coercive power; "left and right... I'm gonna whip them with my songs".

This time they look to The Pioneers and Prince Deadly for another crucial pair of riddims. Prince Alfonso & The Fever kick off with fat-bottomed swagger and earthy dub funk grooves, and Nestor Alvarez flip the script with more Latin percussion and bossa-style grooves. Brentford Rd Soul Rebels take you to a hot summer's day with their reggae soundtrack, and last of all Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts lead with a big sax line and hip swinging tambourines that all come underpinned by big bass. Varied and vital, it's a small bit of wax but it packs a big punch.

Review: Rock A Shaka's "Prince Buster Classics" series of seven-inch singles has served up some scintillating Ska of late, mixing tracks from the great man with ones he produced for other artists. The latest "45" in the series is more straightforward and simply gathers together two of the Ska pioneer's greatest cuts. First up on side A is 1966's "I Won't Let You Cry", a super-sweet fusion of mid-tempo ska rhythms, dewy-eyed soul vocals from the man himself and nods towards the American rhythm and blues style that so inspired him. That rhythm and blues influence comes to the fore on flipside "I'm Sorry", a loved-up, organ-rich number that features some of Buster's most heartfelt vocals.
