  10. Shida (4:02)
Review: 'Mordechai is another blissed-out record from Texan party-chill-psyche trio Khruangbin. It's also among the outfit's most defined and driven, a smooth, sticky hot funk odyssey made for hazy afternoon soirees. Leader Laura Lee is, as ever, unfathomably siren-like on vocals, her bass grooves aiding the process of seduction no end. Even at the most upbeat and anthemic, 'Time (You and I)', it's hard not to feel woozy and intoxicated by the pared-back breaks and guitar lick combination. Dance floor ammo for sure, as is Pelota. Overall, though, it's an album best savoured slowly, allowing you to fully appreciate every lackadaisical moment of opiate goodness, with tracks such as 'Father Bird, Mother Bird', 'One To Remember' and 'Shida' summoning stunning sticky, heavy, deep atmospheres.

Review: Inspired by the slightly unlikely collision of the Thai music of the '70s and The Shadows, Khruangbin - the name means 'aeroplane' in Thailand - are purveyors of a deliriously mellow and beguiling form of jammed-out power-trio guitar music - far removed from standard notions of psych and dreampop, partly owing to its pan-global influences, its nonetheless both psychedelic and dreamy, not to mention possessed of an unhurried, reflective and spacious lilt that renders this Texan-London outfit a rare treat in an information-saturated age, taking on delicate soul and funk with exotic atmospheres and making the journey feel both blissful and effortless.

  1. Texas Sun (4:13)
  2. Midnight (5:15)
  3. C-Side (4:46)
  4. Conversation (6:41)
Review: If you've caught either Khruangbin or Leon Bridges live before, or indeed listened to anything by either band or producer-singer-songwriter, you'll know where this 20-minute EP is heading. The sleeve art, which gives more than a nod to the 1960s hippy movement, also offers a major clue.

Tripped out, smoked out, lackadaisical, bliss-infused overtures, honied and syrupy, easing you in so far that you don't quite realise how hard it is to crawl back out of the sugar-coated opiate haze. A collection of heady, hallucinogenic work for 21st Century high plains drifters, it's jazzy, psychy, lush soulful fare you'll be wanting to hear again and again, capturing the heat and slow pace of America's southern states with heartfelt songwriting from genuine masters. The result is something very special indeed.

Review: Australian combo Tama Impala has always been hard to pin down, with their two studio albums to date displaying a keen desire to capture a trippy, psychedelic vibe, whilst refusing to settle on one easy-to-categorize sound. Currents, their fourth album, continues this trend, toning down some of the psychedelic rock elements in favour of nods to blue-eyed soul, woozy dream-pop, cheery summery pop (see the radio hit in waiting "The Less I Know The Better"), and even the head-nodding rhythms of hip hop (which, incidentally, prove the perfect backing for the morphine pop wooziness of "Past Life"). It's a blend that re-casts the band as baked, inter-dimensional travellers with a neat line in enveloping, sun-kissed downtempo pop.

  1. Future Days
  2. Spray
  3. Moonshake
  4. Bel Air
Review: After 1972's seminal Ege Bamyasi, the German Krautrock legends released what is one of our personal favourite Can LPs. Aside from being the last work of theirs to feature the vocals of Damo Suzuki, it's a seriously deep and full-bodied piece of work, as you'd expect from the band. The title track itself is a hypnotic, visceral journey through space and time, but all the tracks on this are pure classics. You even get their poppier of moments in the form of "Moonshake". Don't ask any questions, just cop it. Essential gear.

  7. Spoon (3:05)
Review: This 1972 classic has been cited as a major influence by the likes of Beck, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and even Kanye West. The fourth album from the group, its release came at a time of growing exposure with lead single, '"Spoon", topping the German Top 10 and selling over 300,000 copies. It was this success that offered the opportunity to record the remainder of the album in their makeshift "Inner Space" home studio, an old former cinema. With bassist Holger Czukay on engineering and producing duties, several daily chess games between vocalist Damo Suzuki and keyboardist Irmin Schmidt, and a frantic recording process, Can delivered their piece de resistance - a dense, sprawling work of wild imagination, where their psychedelic adventuring intersected most perfectly with their pop sensibilities.

Review: Fans of The Grateful Dead listen up: you should have been taking note of Rose City Band before now. Don't worry, though, this self-titled from a blues-tipped troupe - who clearly understand the joys of psychedelia - is the outfit's debut. As such while you've missed a bit, there's hopefully far more to come. When it comes to outfits like Rose City Band it's easy to simply reel off a list of people the pack have elements of, partly because accurate definitions don't come easy when there are shades of garage rock, tripped out roll, and even some hallucinogenic take on country and western swoon at play. And that's just on the appropriately titled "Wandering Feeling". You could well nod to Moon Duo, Little Feat and the aforementioned Dead, alongside Cosmic Americana, of course. References aside, RCB rank among the finest making this fare, so prepare to get lost in a kaleidoscopic road trip.

Review: It's not everyday you find psyche rock that sounds like it is genuinely going somewhere with purpose. The sense of urgency on tracks like the chugging and propellant 'I'm Not Living In The Past Anymore' jump off the record and grab you by the scruff of the neck, impact slowly increasing as the waves of synth and harmonised vocals build towards ever higher heights. There are certainly plenty of dreamy moments to counterbalance some of that energy - opener 'Schmetterling' feels lighter than air, 'R&B' nods to the ethereality of Spiritualized. But this Austin, Texas outfit seem altogether more rooted in the physical rather than trippy world, with tracks like 'Hell Bastards' belonging to a rawer end of the spectrum, owing as much to early prog prototypes as woozy, hazy, blissed out business.

Review: The Australian collective continue to wave their freak flag high on this, the latest in a startlingly prolific series of records that have seen them rise to the higher echelons of garage/psych power. 'Quarters', however, is unique even for them - comprising four ten minute tracks, it takes a more free-form style, with loose jamming coalescing into a glorious wash of ethereal extrapolation. Not merely a band with a startling growth rate, King Gizzard here prove themselves one with plenty of sttings to their bow, and 'Quarters' will be greeted with good cheer by admirers of fans of Ty Segall and Follakzoid alike.

Review: Swedish heavy psychedelic rockers Dungen are pretty incredible live on stage. Even if you've never seen them, the contents of this record are enough to assure you of that. There's palpable energy emitting from the speakers, a grungy but cosmic barrage of sounds that grab you almost from the off (aptly-titled opener "Track 1" introduces things via a gentile, bluesy warm up) before we're plunged into Led Zep-esque territories. To make that comparison would likely have the devout on both sides up in arms - it's lazy but nonetheless relevant. What's here is far from your average live-on-record offering; it's a true showcase of their famed and largely improvised shows, and real evidence of what they are capable of bestowing on us to keep if it weren't for the nature of studio albums themselves. A creative tour de force in action, laid down for all time.

Review: Since their early heyday of mammoth pop hits, electronic-indie duo MGMT seemed to sound gradually more and more conflicted, unsure whether to continue producing stadium-scale hooks or follow their eccentricities. It seems, with their fourth full-length 'Little Dark Age', that they've opted for the latter - sounding all the more confident and cohesive for it. 'Little Dark Age' sees the pair channeling their synthetic poppy psychedelia into their darkest, most serious and interesting songwriting yet. Anybody who panned 2013's self-titled album or 2010's 'Congratulations' should be pleasantly surprised by this return to form and new-found resolve. 'Little Dark Age' is a far cry from MGMT's definitive debut, but it's to the band's credit that exploring the more weird and wonderful corners of their pop-sensibilities has worked so well.
