Review: Northampton-based psychedelic rock band Dark formed in 1968 while founding member Steve Giles was still at school. They quickly became popular on the live circuit and worked up a tight playing style that they managed to capture when in the studio. Their debut album is their most well-known but a long series of compilations have also been issued. However, this is the first-ever accurate reproduction of one of the last surviving original twelve gatefold copies of the band's debut with the full-colour gatefold sleeve.

Review: Estonian-based label RR Gems is on a mission to present music that carries on a rich tradition of "free form, experimental and jazz" sounds. It does that here with dynamic Helsinki sextet, Soft Power, who have a style that ranges from jazz-rock to psychedelic jazz, always with exuberant musicianship and eclectic energy. Raw Bites is another exceptional outing that challenges conventions without ever losing sight of a compelling groove in amongst the cosmic sounds and noodling melodies. Walking bass brings bluesy qualities to some tunes and others are epic sonic adventures a la Sun Ra.

Review: Captain Beyond may not be the first name on everyone's lips when it comes to supergroups, but let's break the elements down before rushing to judgment. Rod Evens, formerly of Deep Purple, Bobby Caldwell, once the Johnny Winter drummer, Iron Butterfly axeman Larry Reinhardt, and Lee Dorman - who was the bassist in that band - coming together to make outside the box guitar-fuelled sounds.

OK, so we're definitely talking about the specialist end of supergroups, but still, the moving parts here are nothing short of impressive. Forming in 1971, and releasing three records through to 1977, this album captures their essence and innovative abilities, melding hard rock, progressive, jazz fusion and space rock without coming across as self-indulgent or overblown. Hardly the easiest thing to pull off when you think about it.

Review: Amorphous Androgynous are back with something suitably epic in the form of this symphonic, 40-minute prog space-rock concept album, We Persuade Ourselves We Are Immortal. It is presented as five fantastic parts with the legendary Peter Hammill and Paul Weller both guesting, while the Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir and a 25-piece live orchestral string section provide the sumptuous sound that makes this most expansive and borderless record sound so meaningful. A cosmic trip of gigantic proportions with all the ups and downs you need to really feel moved, this is the definition of prog lavishness.

Review: Mute and Spoon Records continue in their CAN retrospective bout, following up the first two parts of the long-lost CAN live series ('Brighton' and 'Stuttgart' respectively) with further re-releases of their best known albums. Here, their sci-fi prog masterpiece 'Monster Movie' gets a blue vinyl rerub, doing best justice yet to the band's debut after Holger Czukay and Irmin Schmidt left their academic careers to start the band. The twenty minute peak state 'Yoo Doo Right' sounds particularly great here, thanks to the band members overseeing the album's most recent remaster in 2004. As ever with CAN, this album has an honest, intense and raw sound.

Review: For fans, this album contains the very essence of what made CAN such an iconic group. The band's blend of progressive rhythms and morphing, tantilizing melodies are all here in Delay 1968, which was recored in that year but not initially put out until 1981 (it was initially meant to be their debut album). Each tune comes laden with thrilling effects, tape edits, loops that makes every tune brim with vitality and a harsh, coarse texture. There is a real rawness to the whole thing that makes it a definitive garage-rock classic with some calling it a proto-CAN sound because of how they evolved in subsequent years.

Review: RECOMMENDED
It was two in two for Alabama Shakes when they first unveiled this bonafide swamp rock masterpiece. Released in 2015, Sound & Color took the blueprint laid out with Boys & Girls and then kicked up into fifth gear. It's soul. It's blues. It's sweat-soaked funk. Most importantly, though, it's the kind of record that keeps giving the more you listen, sounding equally at home in the 1950s as it does the 2010s.

It's hard to really put into words the level of husky, pained, heart-on-sleeve musicality at the core of this record. Brittany Howard's voice might never again sound as utterly distraught and reflective, pained and somehow filled with hope for a brighter day. Individual readings aside, this is among the finest blues records to land this century, and ranks up there with some of the greats of the 20th, so don't sleep on this edition complete with closing tracks recorded live at the legendary Capitol Studios.

Review: British psychedelic rock band Dark released their debut album Dark Round The Edges in 1972 and put out several more until the late 70s. Steve Giles was the man responsible for forming the group while still at school in Northampton in 1968. He took care of the design, photography and production as well as playing lead guitar and providing vocals alongside Martin Weaver on guitar, Alan Bowley engineering and Ron Johnson on bass. Their well-honed live sound transferred well to record when they head into SIS Studios to record the bulk of their work. Melodic prog rock licks, fuzzy guitar riffs and angular drums define much of this collection.

Review: Belgian-Moroccan singer Aicha Haskal is at the heart of this fabulous project which sees her joining creative forces with super-talented musicians from the Belgian scene. Between them, the group has a mad diverse spread of backgrounds and influences which means their music too is broad in scope - psychedelic sounds and funky grooves, Arabic melodies and European rhythms all feature in this album as do rap and parlando. Egyptian poet Abdelhamid Farag penned their first single 'Ghalat' and now this album expands around that with music that fights the oppression of women and fights for revolution.

In the past they have done some mega well loved Alternative Funk compilations which got the label off to a fine start and now they dig into an array of cult cassette releases to bring us treasure from Audiologie N-4 - The Independant Psychedelic Trip and Audiologie 5 et 6 - Ethniques Urbaines. This is music from the avant-garde and post punk scenes that draws on wave, spoken word, dark dub and industrial for its eerie yet alluring charms, all with a real edge. Ethnic, idiosyncratic and psyched out, this is another great overview.

Review: It could not get much more late-1960s into early-1970s folk rock if it tried. Band name: Rainbird. Album title: Maiden Flight. General vibe: somewhere between a psychedelic ultraworld, late night blues basement and trip to a remote island to join an off-grid community. Painting quite a vivid picture there, admittedly, this 1971 rarity proves exactly why contemporary musicians can try to emulate this era but will never truly recreate it. Simply put, it's impossible to commit in the same way today. Rant and questionable point aside, Rainbird's uncovered gem is an epic masterpiece in no uncertain terms. From the wistful croonerdom of 'Stormdance (Part 1)' and its Wurlitzer powered chaotic seizure follow up l ('Stormdance (Part 2)'), to the lead guitar solo mastery of 'Man On the Mountain' and the quiet, reflective journeyman stuff on 'Sailboat', it manages to include every totem of this scene, without sounding cliched.

Review: Where do you start with 'Wild' Billy Childish? A true enigma, and a figurehead of the eccentric, anti-establishment British arts scene known for advocating amateurism, non-conformity and free emotional expression through creativity since the 1970s, co-founder of the Stuckism figurative painting movement, concerned with supposed Remodernist ideals which push back against the post-modern, it's almost easy to forget about his recording career in and among the book publishing, exhibitions, poems and Super 8 movies.

Thankfully, then, we have The Fighting Tameraire in our new releases pile to remind us that he's fundamentally a deft hand at writing, arranging, singing and performing lo-fi semi-traditional garage folk stuff that has one foot in the English pubs of bygone ages and another in contemporary alternative rock. This collection is rousing, emotive, witty, and thoroughly human in a way that feels increasingly rare today.

It is a record that collects together four fab fan favourites. The major one is the 24-minute epic 'Psychedelic Hypnotist Daydream (demo)' which takes up all of the a-side and is a truly immerse and heady sonic trip. It is one of the group's most epic ever tunes and also included are 'Duck Dodgers Theme (Duck Dodgers Demo: With Wayne Scratch Vocal),' 'I Know I've Got To Make That Dream The Real Thing (Demo),' and last but not least the lovely melancholy of 'Do You Realize?? Review: Man With A Gun is the debut long player from Singaporean prog and funk group Funkgus. It has a famously enigmatic toxic blue jacket that lurks you in and musically it is no less intriguing. As well as a passionate cover of King Curtis's 'Memphis Soul Stew' there are plenty of supremely psychedelic sounds. The opener is steeped in funky bass riffs with rock-tinged drum breaks and plenty of raw vocals and from there the grooves come thick and fast, often with plenty of texture and charismatic vocals such as on 'Spill The Wine' and the leggy, expressive sounds of 'Everyday People' with its twisted wah wah guitars.

Review: Japanese jazz drummer Akira Ishikawa's blistering 'Uganda (Dawn Of Rock)' makes a piognant claim as to the origins of rock n' roll, blending traditional African drumming workouts with the futuristic tropes belonging to psychedelic rock and fourth world music. Consisting of just four movements ranging from formless to the watery and rhythmic, its recording lies in the basis of just one legendary drummer, but in all its sonics sounds as though an enormous ensemble were behind it. A well-sought J-psych rarity.

They played with legendary names like Patti Smith and The Ramones and has something of a hit in '76 with 'Loretta.' They eventually called it a day in 1981 though have reunited over the years. The line-up that can be heard on this new album first came together in 2018 and continue to make good new tunes today. There is no shortage of energy and invention here so welcome back.

Review: Los Sounds de Krauts is frequently cited in any list of the best Colour Haze moments. In all honesty, that comes down to a matter of opinion. If one this is for sure, though, the record is guaranteed to divide opinion, and it really depends on whether you're into loose, off-the-cuff feeling albums that have an air of improvisation to them. Less of an LP in the traditional sense, this is Colour Haze doing what they do best - an hour and a half, or thereabouts, of stoner rock designed to take you on an increasingly immersive sonic trip. It's gritty, guttural, at times high energy and in other moments so low-slung you can almost imagine the band playing horizontally. We think it's a masterclass of layering and melding ideas harmonies, riffs and motifs into one beautifully messy whole. If there's any sense left, you will too.

Review: English alternative-garage psyche rockers (and that barely comes close) Spacemen 3 had a serious reputation for their live shows. Inducing the kind of trance-like states in their audiences we more commonly associate with the endless spirals of dance music, for some the trio are godfathers of shoegaze, writing the book on that epic guitar opera long before people really knew what to call it, helping set the tone for the more exploratory side of 1980s rock. Simply put, they were a group you'd feel lucky to have experienced live, and even this five track opus of mind-melting rhythms, discordance and pent up energy is a pretty incredible thing to behold. Recorded live at Melkweg, Amsterdam, and originally released in 1989, once you've lost a few minutes in the refrains, builds, and crescendos you'll understand the cult status of this release - thankfully now repressed.

Riding fairly high on the success of their singles, the band, whose members included Jim Capaldi, Steve Winwood, Chris Wood, and Dave Mason, released its 1967 debut LP, which also soon shot up to the number 16 slot on the UK albums chart. Aided by their use of unusual instruments (Winwood played the organ, Wood played flute and Mason the sitar) they created a hybrid of pop/blues rock with a sound that was somewhat unique for the time and which soon made them international superstars. Review: Emotional Rescue go hunting in the reeds for forgotten projects, and come up trumps once again. Delay Tactics formed at the beginning of the 80s as a tape looping project from Carl Weingarten and Reed Nesbit before expanding their palette with Walter Whitney's synth vamping. They didn't last past their second album, 1984's Any Questions?, but now the finest of the band's catalogue has been documented here. The sound is prime inquisitive 80s, teetering between the traditional band dynamic and the experimental pastures of technology-powered music. At times infectiously playful ('Oyster') and at others compellingly beautiful ('Kites'), Delay Tactics are exactly the kind of band that deserve another moment in the sunshine.

Review: Jean Pierre Decerf's records have been sampled by top talent in the game (Wu-Tang Clan's RZA) and have also been massively inspirational to the likes of indie talent such as Air. However, the Parisian has always been something of a recluse and it's only now that his best moments have been collected into a definitive compilation by Born Bad Records. As both the cover and title suggest, this stuff is pure psychedelia from start to finish and tracks like "Like Flight" are simply stunning, where freaky guitar riffs meet with twisted synth patterns, funky percussion swings and seductive vocals. Not to exaggerate or anything but this LP might well be the best thing that's landed here at Juno HQ this week and you'd be silly not to pick it up. Essential electronic and discofied innovations.

Review: "What's a girl like you, doing in a place like this?" Zappa croons with audible debauchery as 'The Mud Shark' falls effortlessly into 'What Kind of a Girl Do You Think We Are', making it clear that Fillmore East: June 1971 is the kind of live album that quickly makes you feel as though you're right there front and centre watching this rock 'n' roll icon delivering his legendary live show.

But there's much more here than simply a recording from a gig. The record is as much a concept album as anything else, offering a skew-eyed look at the life of a guitar outfit on the road, spinning yarns about - among other things - staying in a motel where guests can fish directly from their room, 'negotiating' sex with groupies and girlfriends, essentially representing the tongue-in-cheek, satirising Zappa in all his glory.

Review: Two-Piers is one of those very special imprints that has tasked itself with unearthing the kind of gems people who compile movie soundtracks only ever seem to be able to find. In the past, the label's compilations have focused on essay-worthy things like the evolution of French pop (1964-2019, no less), and but in this case the team turns its attention to a bonafide zeitgeist.

Calling everything here 'rare' would be overstating it - we have legendary household names in the form of Nina Simone, Willie Nelson, and Tim Buckley, to name but a few. But nothing here is an obvious choice, calling to mind a bygone age when you could still find yourself discovering new material by chart-toppers years after falling in love with them because access to everything was limited. Aligned by a feeling - late nights spent stargazing with equally obsessed musos - what's here is marvelously timeless.

Review: Much as it may surprise some, this isn't a new and wryly political band putting the climate crisis front and centre. Instead, Relatively Clean Rivers are a relatively poorly remembered band in the annals of mid-20th Century tunes, although digging a little deeper makes you realise just how much mythology and mystery surrounds this, the one album they gave to the world.

Headed up by Phil Pearlman, of The Beat of The Earth and The Electronic Hole fame, RCR takes you on a peyote-laced trip into the Californian desert to explore more experimental, dream-like ends of 1960s folk rock 'n' roll. Vivid enough to ensure you can pretty much smell the hemp, it's crucial to note this isn't just another one of those stoned hippie albums. The quality of what's on this (originally privately released) record is so good it went on to inspire the likes of Wilco.

Review: Timing is definitely everything in life. Just ask Morning Reign. This unearthed album, now around 50 years old, was never released at the time, but had it been there's every chance you'd be much more familiar with the band name in question. Instead, they only put out four 45rpm singles while still active, and disappeared with little fanfare and few tributes paid. Take it from us before you even hit play on the previews, that story is regrettable, and their obscurity a crying shame.

Critics tackling Taking Cover now it has finally made its way to the release schedule have pointed to Morning Reign setting precedents for garage rock, and the likelihood people would have been referencing them alongside the likes of The Doors and Eric Burdon had they managed to break through. A classic that took a long time to realise it.

Review: If you call yourselves Stoner you better be able to lay claim to being the definitive stoner rock band, but what do you know? Led by Brant Bjork of Kyuss, Fu Manchu and The Desert Sessions legend, with the equally legendary Nick Oliveri (Queens of the Stone Age) on bass, this is a supergroup without a doubt. Following hot on the heels of their debut album Stoners Rule, the group return with totally..., featuring more of those fuzz-caked guitars, languorous bass licks and such coolly detached songs as 'A Million Beers', 'Spacedude & The Burn' and 'Driving Miss Lazy'. This is the sound of musical heroes kicking back and playing for fun, and they can't help but make it the dopest rock music you've heard since their last album.

Review: Australia is a hotbed of psychedelic rock 'n' roll bands. Perhaps, in the same way the country's cinematic output often does, this is all a result of the wild wild country effect - a nation with landscapes so evocatively barren, filled with endless nowheres, the imagination runs riot in terms of what might be waiting in that untapped outback. Maybe it's just because cities like Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane have incredibly fertile native music scenes that can compete with the best from the Euro-American axis.

Let's not second guess things, and instead focus on the depth and incredible wealth of ideas in this, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets' fifth long player. An energy-packed adventure into a place that's somehow stadium sounding, and yet also the polar opposite of what anyone could call main stage rock 'n' roll music, to say this is a wonderful trip would be underselling things.

Review: You could definitely be forgiven for thinking Elusive Mojo was a much older piece of work, which isn't to say it sounds dated or out of place today; more highlighting the timelessness of high octane heavy metal, its fall out of the limelight but persistence to continue doing what it does very well indeed. Forget the washed up old guard refusing to put a pin in ideas that have repeated themselves for decades, Ecstatic Vision represent the vanguard of a sound we hold dear to our hearts, but don't encounter at its freshest often enough.

Taking a lead from the psychedelic-leaning early metal outfits like Hawkwind and Aphrodite's Child, simply put Ecstatic Vision growl and wail in all the right places, unleashing track after track of juggernaut energy, insane riffs and solos, and industrial power. Steaming ahead of the rest, this latest offering is the kind of record that threatens not just to blow through your hair like a mighty wind, but rip each strand off at the follicle.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Originally founded in 1992, Boris have absolutely nothing to do with the mop-headed World King currently refusing to leave the No.10 party like that guy who nobody really knows at 7AM. Suffice to say, at some point soon we'll all have to pretend to go to bed and then reconvene in the back yard. The gate is always open.

Digressions aside, this particular Boris represents the vanguard of underground Japanese experimental rock. Tracks that can easily help you escape the reality of a world where even the leaders can't be bothered anymore. Staggeringly, W is the band's 27th studio album, and this doesn't include another 15 collaborative long forms, many with fellow Far East noise legend Merzbow. If that name means anything, but Boris doesn't, you should still kind of know what to expect here. Thick bands of guitar scuzz, subtly developing disharmonies, atmospheric drones, and discordant refrains.

It wasn't long after the release of this album that the band, ahem, disbanded... but their reforming in 1994 proved the album to be an influential hit among heads, with 'Nobody Wants Your Love' and 'Whenever I'm Gone' standing out as fan highlights.

Review: You arguably won't get a more unique or insightful window into the No New York no wave post-punk scene than with this intrinsic batch of demos. Mars would go on to conjure sounds that meshed and blended all forms of punk, noise and even post-rock, before the terms became so commonplace. These rehearsal tapes/alternative takes are lifted from the art collective's early formative years when they were still learning how to channel their communal influences and aspirations into sonically challenging, rewarding movements. Filled with thick room-noise reverberations, this pressing grants the ideal opportunity to play spectator (or a mere fly on the wall).

Review: Formed in 1967 at Kyoto's Doshisha University, Les Rallizes Denudes were pioneering in the same way as The Velvet Underground, but their music remained a cult concern through a lack of official releases and a spread of bootlegged recordings. Fronted by enigmatic singer Takashi Mizutani, they presented an untamed noise-rock approach before the genre existed, fusing furious blasts of intensity, psychedelia and free jazz with melodic, folk informed passages. On this reissue, we're taken back to their time playing at shortlived but seminal rock club OZ, which captures this incendiary, little known group as their musical might was growing.

Exactly fifty years after the latter LP, you can hear him on this new recording described as being 'derived from fantasy'. Review: One of the greatest things to happen to the vinyl industry, the beloved Australian rock collective are a force to be reckoned with in terms of releases. For all their conceptual and experimental releases however, 'Omnium Gatherum' works exactly as prescribed - a latin phrase roughly translating to "just a bunch of stuff". The double LP is a collection of reworked unreleased material, as well as original music tacked on to boot - King Gizzard fans never have to worry about getting bang for their buck. Expect frenzied shredding, nu-metal cuts and the occasional synth-pop banger. The real highlight here is 'The Grim Reaper', a fusion of hip-hop and medieval instrumentation if you can believe it. Kenny-Smith's flow is no doubt influenced by the Beastie Boys era of hip-hop, a style being repopularised by the likes of Joey Valence & Brae. The album is a crazy patchwork of genres that feels not unlike watching your favourite movie in the form of a highlight reel.

Review: Since its release almost a decade ago, Furstattl's debut EP for Claremont 56, the revivalist krautrock brilliance of 'Rheinlust', has become an in-demand item. It's for this reason that the label has decided to reissue it, alongside a wealth of other tracks from the Mountaineer offshoot and create this compilation style album. Record one pairs the kraut-goes-space-rock 'Rheinlust' with its' original B-side, the even more cosmic and epic, Can-go-Balearic style brilliance of 'Links Der Pegnitz'. Record two contains two hard-to-find cuts from C56 compilations, the pleasingly upbeat and breezy 'Leerlauf' and the heavier, fuzzier 'Haru', with previously unheard cosmic rock/kraut-disco number 'Fur Paul' (a track named in tribute to Claremont 56 founder Paul 'Mudd' Murphy).

All of the 16 tracks here are previously unreleased demo versions that offer a real insight into how the final album came together. Review: Ty Segall's first album in two years takes the artist into rather new and unexpected musical territory. The production has had a whole redesign and come out the other side with a synthtastic sound but there remains a load of keys and guitars, too. As such Harmonizer sounds new and fresh with plenty of bursts of transcendent energy. The Freedom Band were called upon during the origin of this album and so appear all throughout it, but often one at a time. This intense record is a grown up soul sound that gets more and more compelling with each listen as fresh details keep on revealing themselves.

Review: In 1969 Soft Machine were truly growing into the otherworldly entity they're best known as now, moving on from the more psychedelia-rooted sound of the debut album into the broader expanse presented on Volume Two. This live recording captures them in full flight at the legendary Bataclan in Paris, and the wild creative vision of Robert Wyatt's merry pranksters splays out from the ominous drum intro onwards, through towering crescendos of musicality that touch on noticeable album moments such as the 'Esther's Nose Job' suite from Volume Two to 'Moon In June', which would be released one year later on Third.

Review: Pond started out 2020 by laying down a load of impromptu recordings and unplanned jam session which they have now pulled apart and rebuilt into this new album, 9. It flies by like a stream of electronic indie rock consciousness with barely a moment to pause and take stock. It is packed with references from intergalactic rock operas to bubbling synth pop, 80s hair metal and even some sultry sax and glam rock. The music is certainly something new for the band in many places, but will still appeal to old fans as well as winning new ones.

Review: If this is your first encounter with Follakzoid then prepare to feel a blustering wind rushing through your hair, even if that is only symbolically speaking. Hailing from Chile, the three piece proudly lay claim to influences that date back to the ancient music of the Andes mountain range dominating a vast chunk of their homeland. But if you didn't know that, their work would likely strike you as blisteringly powerful progressive rock with math, garage and grunge elements.

Or at least that's certainly true of 'El Humo', third track on this self-titled gem that feels purpose built for sweaty basements down dodgy backstreets. And the same can be said for 'Directo Al Sol'. Elsewhere, though, more spiritual nuances dominate. 'Loop' seems to send its loose guitar twangs into the cosmos, while 'Sky Input II' invites us to look over the edge of the peak into an endless beyond. Magical stuff.

Review: Since their early heyday of mammoth pop hits, electronic-indie duo MGMT seemed to sound gradually more and more conflicted, unsure whether to continue producing stadium-scale hooks or follow their eccentricities. It seems, with their fourth full-length 'Little Dark Age', that they've opted for the latter - sounding all the more confident and cohesive for it. 'Little Dark Age' sees the pair channeling their synthetic poppy psychedelia into their darkest, most serious and interesting songwriting yet. Anybody who panned 2013's self-titled album or 2010's 'Congratulations' should be pleasantly surprised by this return to form and new-found resolve. 'Little Dark Age' is a far cry from MGMT's definitive debut, but it's to the band's credit that exploring the more weird and wonderful corners of their pop-sensibilities has worked so well.

Review: You don't get to call your band Amyl & The Sniffers if the music is anything short of corrosive, in the best possible way. Launching at a serious pace from the off, this is punk at its modern best - a juggernaut of sweat, swearing and uncompromising songwriting that's only rival for your attention comes in the form of riffs and gritty chord instrumentation.

But the Melbourne, Australia band's second LP is far from a simple rehash of the first, which we could have also described in similar terms to those you just read above. This time round things feel more thoughtful, perhaps even patient in certain moments. Of course they still wear 'weirdos' on their sleeves, tongues often firmly placed in cheeks. But there's a depth here to the songwriting, a retro and introspective feeling that reveals far more than the debut album let us hear.
