Name Of The Game (reissue)
Cat: NW 513. Rel: 23 Nov 22
Brian Bennett & Alan Hawkshaw - "Name Of The Game" (4:25)
Dave Richmond - "Confunktion" (4:38)
Review: Measured Mile is a new 7" label run by regular Ace consultant and confidante Bob Stanley. The plan is to release DJ-friendly 45s that are either very rare or previously unavailable on seven-inch. On this new one come two pieces from esteemed library musicians - the well known pairing of Alan Hawkshaw and Brian Bennett, and Dave Richmond. 'Name Of The Game' is a slow instrumental blues piece with beats ready to be plundered for hip-hop beats that once soundtracked a 1970s aftershave ad, while Richmond's 'Confunktion' is a motivational builder-upper with drums and organs aplenty.

Review: The Tele Music catalogue follows a long tradition of library music mores; stock patterned album art and themed series included. Originally from 1973, Rhythmiques functions as one of the label's most iconic releases. Written entirely in collaboration between French composer and percussionist Pierre Dahan and synthesist Mat Camison, it features tense funk, blunted jazz and heavy breaks all the way. It is considered the rightful sequel to Continental Pop Sound, and despite the origin as library music intended for TV and film, has endured as a vital album for producers and DJs.

Review: British psychedelic rock band Dark released their debut album Dark Round The Edges in 1972 and put out several more until the late 70s. Steve Giles was the man responsible for forming the group while still at school in Northampton in 1968. He took care of the design, photography and production as well as playing lead guitar and providing vocals alongside Martin Weaver on guitar, Alan Bowley engineering and Ron Johnson on bass. Their well-honed live sound transferred well to record when they head into SIS Studios to record the bulk of their work. Melodic prog rock licks, fuzzy guitar riffs and angular drums define much of this collection.

Review: Northampton-based psychedelic rock band Dark formed in 1968 while founding member Steve Giles was still at school. They quickly became popular on the live circuit and worked up a tight playing style that they managed to capture when in the studio. Their debut album is their most well-known but a long series of compilations have also been issued. However, this is the first-ever accurate reproduction of one of the last surviving original twelve gatefold copies of the band's debut with the full-colour gatefold sleeve.

Review: You can't really imagine members of Dream Division doing anything other than being part of Dream Division. A band inspired and heavily influenced by the soundtracks, themes and moods of movies by directors such as Dario Argento and John Carpenter, theirs is a world filled with silver screen tension, sinister plots afoot, and incredibly cool noises. Legend of Lizard Lake is a case in point. Album title certainly no accident, invoking B-movie scenarios by the letter-load, the record is paced with fuzzy guitars, spine-tingling organs, Casio-choral lines, twinkled and chimed melodies, vast, open, almost-Western-yet-very-synthy open sonic frontiers, and the overwhelming sense that something, somewhere, might be watching us. Enough to make the Stranger Things scores sound like they've never seen Phantasm, or at least not recently, this is the whole retro-hued package.

Metallic Spheres In Colour
Cat: 194399 89372. Rel: 29 Sep 23
Metallic Spheres In Colour (Seamless Solar Spheres Of Affection mix)
Metallic Spheres In Colour (Seamlessly Martian Spheres Of Reflection mix)
Review: Metallic Spheres In Colour is a newly reimagined and remixed version of David Gilmour and The Orb's 2010 collaboration Metallic Spheres. It arrives via Sony Music and is a brilliantly trippy work that stems from an idea by The Orb's founder Alex Paterson who always thought that, in the wake of the original version of the album, he could have done more to it. What stopped him was their original concept of "making the music like the Blade Runner soundtrack meets Wish You Were Here." As such, they decided to revisit it, remix it, and make it like an Orb classic that has resulted in a completely different but equally great work.

Metallic Spheres In Colour (180 gram vinyl LP in spot-varnished sleeve)
Cat: 194399 89361. Rel: 29 Sep 23
Metallic Spheres In Colour (Seamless Solar Spheres Of Affection mix) (19:51)
Metallic Spheres In Colour (Seamlessly Martian Spheres Of Reflection mix) (19:39)
Review: Metallic Spheres In Colour is the remixed and reimagined version of the 2010 album Metallic Spheres, a collaboration between historic electronic duo The Orb and Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour. Though the original LP was a psychdelic meeting of minds in ambience - resulting in the conjuration of an advanced, extrasensory life-form in sound known as the 'metallic spheres' - this remix version reflects Alex Paterson's latent desire to flesh out the original's more Orby contours, producing an "almost enitrely different album".
