Review: With the Tour EP, the John Carpenter loving Death Waltz Recording Co go ahead and do something every fan wished they would and persuade the seminal Italian prog rock band Goblin to lay down some new material. Well sort of, the four tracks here are modern reinterpretations of Goblin classics in "Suspiria", "Tenebre", "Profondo Rosso" and "Roller" recorded to sound more in line with the band's current live set up. Conceived initially as a release to coincide with Goblin's recent US tour that culminated in an appearance at the Housecore Horror Film Festival (naturally) the EP is now widely available for fans everywhere. It's worth it for the artwork alone!

Medicine Bag (2:22)
Review: Inner Space Quartet had a busy debut year in 2022: they put out three enthralling funk 7"s between the Far and Dime label and now they arrive on Funk Night outta the US of A. 'Holy Water' sure does have a religious feel to it during the break when some hypnotic chants arrive, but the rest of the tune is defined by psyched-out guitar, Thai funk grooves, and star-gazing cosmic feels. It's a lovely cut followed by 'Medicine Bag,' a dumpy and dubby cut with intoxicating eastern melodies and snaking flute leads.

Review: We aren't sure who Inner Space Quartet are be we are sure you will like them. This is the second new music from them this month and it follows a busy 2022 in which they put out three head-turning 7"s on different labels. They seem to be settling for Funk Night as their home this year but soundwise are harder to pin down - there is Thai funk, space rock, jazz, psyched-out guitars and much more all contained with these two expansive and immersive sounds. 'Paranoia Party' is the really 60s-tinged narcotic opener then 'Delay' brings more rock guitar sounds as if from some secret and tripped-out Stones concert in the desert back in the day.

The Devil Tapes (part 1) (5:53)
The Devil Tapes (part 2) (5:41)
Review: People are not over-egging it when they try and tell you that Polish composer Andrzej Korzynski was an exploratory artist. Words like 'mind-bending', 'cosmic', and 'immersive' are often used in the same sentence as any reference to his name, let alone musical output, which remains some of the most sought after among fans of what can only really be described as staunchly experimental psyche.

For many, The Devil Tapes is the holy grail of Korzynski. Made to score Andrzej ?u?awsk's film, The Devil, by this point the pair had already worked together on the movie soundtrack to Possession, and cracked the collaborative process. Having been asked to make music that was "totally unique, like something from another planet", the composer took his initial taped experiments and pulled the vari-speed down, then layered hallucinatory effects over the top, resulting in something that's beyond a mere accompaniment, and very much integral to the film itself.

Review: Le Disques Bongo Joe's joint release with Calico Discos was a superb EP back in 2020 and it still bangs today, hence the reissue. It offers up four fresh cuts from L'Eclair, a self-styled "exogroove post-internet" six-piece with three must-check albums to their name. Musically, the four tracks offer a breezy, summery and mixed-up blend of Tony Allen style polyrhythms, tropical funk guitars, languid synthesizer sounds, psychedelic electronics and copious amounts of mind-altering dub effects. Our favourites include the low-slung deep Afro-psychedelia of 'Dallas', the rousing, horn-heavy EP opener 'Cebando' (a future dancefloor staple for sure), and the Moog-laden sunrise dreaminess of 'Atlantis'.

The Future Is Now (3:41)
Review: Tokyo-based post/math-rock noodlers Toe have a habit of cleansing the palette of each subsequent full-length they release with a follow up EP. Just like 2005's debut album The Book About My Idle Plot On A Vague Anxiety was followed up with 2006's New Sentimentality EP, the group would return three years on from their stellar 2009 sophomore effort For Long Tomorrow with 2012's The Future Is Now. From the twinkling emo-inflected shoegazing noodles of 'Run For Word' to the more acoustic-driven psych-jazz of 'Ordinary Days', the four cuts purposefully meander and fuse differing elements from the band's arsenal whilst somehow increasing the dense technicality to absurd, near impenetrable levels.

Black Apple Pink Apple (Ricardo Villalobos remix) (10:09)
Review: The revival of celebrated space rock, kosmiche and downtempo fusionists A Mountain of One continues apace. Having returned to action last year after a decade away with two tidy singles, the London-based combo has served up another sublime single. 'Black Apple Pink Apple' contains plenty of bold, ear-catching piano work, alongside a rolling, dancefloor-ready space rock groove and some suitably hazy, emotive vocals. The obligatory dancefloor translation is provided by the king of wonkiness, Ricardo Villalobos, who successfully strips things back and creates one of his sparse-but-rubbery workouts out of little more than the band's beats, rubbery bassline and snippets of vocal.

To kick off with there is sparkly synth-pop from 'Custard's Last Stand' then some piano-laced jazz-funk on 'Black Apple Pink Apple' and much more cosmic and head-melting tackle on the heavily treated 'Make My Love Grow.' Things pick up with the superb jazz-disco of 'Surrender' and the widescreen grooves of 'Dealer' while 'Star' has a more folky and mountain feel. A couple more star gazers close out this lush and heartfelt listen.

Review: After Dinner is like one of those molecular gastronomy adventures, where dishes are both playful and highly complex, not necessarily revealing themselves until the very end. Done with talk of food? Let's just say this is a loose art collective led by a composer called Haco, who were concerned with taking musical plurality and splicing disparate elements together to create a kind of friendly Frankenstein's monster of sound.

And friendly it definitely is. Considered a true one-off of Japanese pop-art rock-avant garde, Paradise of Replica is jaunty, it's amusing, it's beguiling and, ultimately, incredibly immersive. There are moments where the clash of pianos plucked straight from a comedy of manners opera and rough electric guitars (to give one example of the juxtapositions) feel rather strange, but it doesn't take too long for you to get sucked right into the centre of this insane sonic universe.

Review: 7 Up is three things; a ubiquitous energy drink brand, an infamous TV show charting the upbringing and development of various children from the ages of seven upwards, and the third studio album by Ash Ra Tempel - their only collaborative piece with notorious psychologist and psychedelic drug advocate Timothy Leary. Supposedly, the sprawling psych-Moog album was named after a bottle of 7 Up that had been spiked with LSD was given to the band's lyricist Brian Barritt. This new version contains the original manuscript of the album's concept by Leary, as well as photos from the recording session in Bern.

Review: Ash Ra Tempel are one of the undisputed totems of krautrock, and from their considerable legacy, Join Inn is one of their most important records. The line-up of the band in 1973 included Klaus Schulze and Manuel Gottsching, who went on to become legends in their own right, but it was on pieces like the extended 'Freak'n'roll' and 'Jenseits' that they cemented their reputation as instrumental trailblazers, shattering the conventions of rock music and creating a new musical mode that still carries weight today. Getting the celebration in early, Gottsching's own Mg Art label are toasting 50 years since this landmark album came out with a shiny new reissue - much needed given the scant repressing Join Inn has had up until now.

Review: As one of the key components of pioneering jazz-psych-fusion monolith Soft Machine, Kevin Ayers has a formidable legacy within the more outlandish areas of British rock. What better way to take stock of his might as a composer and performer than to cast an ear back over some BBC sessions from his creative peak in the early 70s. Amongst the considerable cast of collaborators who feature on this set are fellow Soft Machine legends Robert Wyatt, Hugh Hopper, Elton Dean and the likes of Lol Coxhill and Archie Legget, recorded for shows like Top Gear, Alan Black Show and Bob Harris.

Review: Nature documentary series The Living Planet very much captured the imagination of Raoul Bjorkenheim back in 1986. It featured erupting volcanoes and plumes of molten lava and some of that drama and energy is captured in this fine jazz album which now gets a new extended reissue. Bjorkenheim studied at the Helsinki Conservatory for a year and the Berklee College of Music in Boston for three years and worked with composer and drummer Edward 'Eetu' Vesala. For this album, he played with reed virtuosos Jorma Tapio and Tapani Rinne, bassist Sampo Lassila and drummers Michel Lambert and Heikki 'Lefty' Lehto. It is a hot and raw record that contains an album's worth of previously unheard material.

Now Galaxy have scored the record as their opening gambit, which should satisfy more than a few second hand vigilantes out there. From the faithful treatment of the cover and labels to the quality of the remastering, it's everything a classic reissue of a hidden gem should be.

Review: Those who were lucky enough to have seen Can live in their 1970s pomp will happily tell you that it was a mind-blowing experience, in part because the pioneering Krautrock outfit improvised as much during live performances as they did during studio sessions. That commitment to artistic freedom and expression is much in evidence on 'Live in Cuxhaven 1976', the latest in an ongoing series of remastered live albums based on infamous bootleg records. The concert was relatively short by their standards, and is split into four parts here, each of which shows the band brilliantly working around a groove, drawing great influence from jazz, dub sonics, art-rock and their love of crafting hypnotic, blazed epics.

Review: We often celebrate when a record turns ten or 20 years young and still warrants the same attention it did upon official release. Here we have the tenth studio album from Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band, which has hit the big 4-5, and remains as groundbreaking as ever. Unpacking that presents two major points - the record was well, well ahead of its time, and the artists involved were still full of incredible ideas ten records into their catalogue. In short, this collection is formidable. If this is your first encounter with El Capitan et al then, firstly, where have you been? Scolding aside, raw blues rock & roll energy radiates from the album, with distinctly psychedelic, absurdist, free jazz elements that create a constant air of expecting the unexpected. Even if you've been listening to these songs for the last 45 years.

He valued their dark, brooding, menacing beats and spooky soundtracks and this album is a perfect example of that adsorbing broodiness. It came on Vertigo in 1973 and was in part funded by the Arts Council of Great Britain. It started off life as a live show and then with an expanded cast become an album recording with help from vocalist Norma Winstone. Be With have remastered the whole record from original tapes and the sleeve has also been restored to its full original glory.

Review: Some tempos are pivotal to certain genres and 140 is one of those when it comes to dubstep. For that reason it is the title of this fine on going All Stars series from DUPLOC. Volume four is another masterful one with all niches explored starting with the low-end wobble of Mob Killa's 'Hattori' which is a brilliantly moody and late night saunter through a desolate urban landscape. Oudjat's 'Losing Control' is just as menacing and dark, and Ego Death pairs to back further to lush echoing hits and warped synths that hang in the air on 'Run It.' The flip side offers three more sparse but impactful cuts of hefty 140 bass brilliance.

Review: "It is, throughout its 49 minutes, a vivid and highly cosmic journey into the very core of every impulse this band has ever explored." That's a bold claim to make, but the official release blurb isn't actually pushing things too far with that loaded declaration of the genius behind Ascension Codes, Cynic's long-awaited return to the LP release schedule after a seven year hiatus.

So the last time we met in album form it was on 2014's Kindly Bent to Free Us, and it's fair to say this follow up is both the outfit being reborn, and evolving from that template. Nine central tracks offer operatic metal fanfares and complex, propellant hard rock. Meanwhile, interludes and take outs turn gaps into bridges, and ensure pressing play at track one, and listening all the way through, is a genuinely immersive experience, not to mention a real adventure.

Steve Giles was the man responsible for forming the group while still at school in Northampton in 1968. He took care of the design, photography and production as well as playing lead guitar and providing vocals alongside Martin Weaver on guitar, Alan Bowley engineering and Ron Johnson on bass. Their well-honed live sound transferred well to record when they head into SIS Studios to record the bulk of their work. Melodic prog rock licks, fuzzy guitar riffs and angular drums define much of this collection.

Impressive for a band who were destined to fizzle, collectors have itched to get their hands on it for years; now, once more, yet 100 more reissued copies of the album come straight from the diggers and archivists over at Seelie Court. It's got a soft and lo-fi yet charming sound, which incredible solo guitarwork from Martin Weaver and effects (not to mention toilet flushing sounds) by Alan Bowley.

Review: You can't really imagine members of Dream Division doing anything other than being part of Dream Division. A band inspired and heavily influenced by the soundtracks, themes and moods of movies by directors such as Dario Argento and John Carpenter, theirs is a world filled with silver screen tension, sinister plots afoot, and incredibly cool noises. Legend of Lizard Lake is a case in point. Album title certainly no accident, invoking B-movie scenarios by the letter-load, the record is paced with fuzzy guitars, spine-tingling organs, Casio-choral lines, twinkled and chimed melodies, vast, open, almost-Western-yet-very-synthy open sonic frontiers, and the overwhelming sense that something, somewhere, might be watching us. Enough to make the Stranger Things scores sound like they've never seen Phantasm, or at least not recently, this is the whole retro-hued package.

Review: There's a juxtaposition of gravel and soaring, almost-gliding quality to the epic guitar work that welcomes you into Eden Gardens. It's as though the refrains and chords are so expansive they envelop everything from ground level to stratosphere. The work of Papir and Cause Sui members Martin Rude and Jakob Skott, the result is both technically impressive and spiritually beneficial. Post-rock that makes you feel genuinely freer than before pressing play.

As grand as it sounds, there's also something very real happening here. For some, this kind of stuff may come across overblown and inflated, but then there's no pomp and pageantry present. And by that we mean the parts that exist are well balanced and you can understand why they are there without necessarily knowing. Everything feels right, and in the correct place, which is probably the best recommendation we can give.

Review: El Trio was Pocho Lapouble, Ricardo Lew and Adalberto Cevasco, a collective of seventies jazz musicians from Argentina. Their Todo En Su Medida Y Armoniosamente album is a cult classic from 1974 which marked them out as some of South America's most important artists and an original copy will cost you upwards of L350. It is a fusion of soul, jazz, a little folk and plenty of funk. Tracks like 'Albarraseis' are earthy and organic affairs that take you to the Argentine countryside, while 'Quien Se Llevo A Mi Negra?' is a more funky and rocking beat for the clubs. The record has aged well and still sounds fresh all these years later.

Review: If you type ELO into Google today the first suggestion is Elon Musk. Sure, he might have cracked, to some extent at least, the mass-marketed electric car, and all the best to him in the space race. Nevertheless, it's disputable whether or not he was ever quite the visionary Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, and Bev Bevan were in the early-mid-1970s. The undisputed heyday of Electric Light Orchestra, fourth album Eldorado was arguably at the peak of their creative force. Already having firmly established their sound - a surreal hybrid of bar rock, soul, blues, and grand strings - this record really sees them explore the possibilities of that abstract brew. Better yet, ears were open enough at the time to ensure they didn't languish in obscurity, sole reserve of the obsessives or deliberately contrary listeners, and instead claimed a spot in the upper echelons of British pop at the time.

Review: Mobile Fidelity have mastered from Electric Light Orchestra's original audio tapes for this hybrid and numbered SACD version of the band's fourth studio album, Eldorado. At the time it came with a concept that follows a Walter Mitty-like character who journeys into fantasy worlds via dreams to get himself away from daily disillusionment. Musically, the album reaches for the sky with bold and imaginative worlds taking you away from the mundanity of the everyday and into a universe of cinematic sounds. This long player is now almost 50 years old but still very much sounds futuristic, which is testament to visionary composer-musician Jeff Lynne's skill.

Review: Electro Keyboard Orchestra draw you deep into their intoxicating world of international rhythm and melody from the first moment of the first tune. IT's lead by a snaking melody that brings to mind gypsy music and is underpinned by an almost rocksteady dub rhythm. The album first dropped in 1985 and was a result of 20 synthesizers being operated by eight of Japan's leading keyboard players. It is a truly captivating affair that takes in jazz-funk, rare-groove and hip hop styles throughout its course and amongst them is 'The Iron Side' which was of course used as the theme for the US TV detective drama of the same name. A real gem.

Review: Spring is certainly in the air on the third outing from Elephant Gym. The Taiwanese (Kaohsing) rock band have set out to delve pretty deep into our minds, projecting sounds that bore holes and become earworms, bringing about a state that's almost hypnotic. The impressive thing is, that's done with a collection of 12 tracks that pack so much personality and - at times - energy, they couldn't possibly have this effect.
As an album, this sounds like prog rock balladry ('Dream Of You'), good time jazz ('Dear Humans'), spellbinding piano solos ('Dreams', 'Wings'), experimental funk ('Witches'), and numerous raw, dense, psychedelic odysseys that can be challenging to unbox and absorb, but, once immersed, the full experience is mind-bogglingly rich and rewarding, with a multitude of genres happening, interpreted by one star attraction.

Review: As well as his prog rock god status as part of ELP, English musician Keith Emerson is well known for his soundtracks for the likes of Dario Argento's 1980 movie Inferno. This Murderock album was written in part as a tribute to the master of Italian horror Lucio Fulci and was first released in 1985, described at the time as being like Flashdance meets Psycho. It's a mix of dance tunes for the day and some dramatic scores and was first reissued in 1993. This version adds four never before released tunes which were used in the backing to the most macabre scenes of the movie.

Review: This may be the rock supergroup Envy of None's debut album, but given that their line up features Alex Lifeson from Rush and Andy Curran of Coney Hatch, alongside Maiah Wynne and Alfio Annibalini, their pedigree alone will see it feverishly anticipated by some. The band grew out of a casual arrangement to collaborate between Lifeson and Curran which started some four years ago, and only became a serious band once an album's worth of material had accumulated. Lifeson describes the band's appeal as the friction and contrast between the "heavy and dark" sound of the musicians, augmented by the fragile voice of singer Wynne.

He put out 20 odd albums of his own while appearing, often as an arranger and composer, on more than 750 other musical works. Gente Distratta was his 1997 album on Number Uno, the third and last with the label but a triumph of prog guitar, space jazz and afro-rock brilliance. The tracks are densely arranged affair with millions of things going on - gorgeous chords and melodies, smooth funk bass, tight stick work and rhythmic innovation that is hard to keep up with. Trying to do so is brilliant fun, though.

Review: Family's final studio album, It's Only a Movie, celebrated its 50th birthday in late 2023. To mark the occasion, Esoteric has offered up this remastered, expanded edition. Disc one boats the original album, an extended fusion of blues, psychedelic rock, string-laden progressive rock and Country & Western-influenced Americana, as well as a handful of single B-sides, alternate takes and early versions of LP cuts. Over on disc two, we're treated to a mixture of BBC 'in concert' recordings (where their roots in the British blues explosion of the late 1960s are far more evident) and performances captured for BBC Radio One's legendary 'Top Gear' programme (which did much in the 1960s to bring Beatles performances to the masses).

Review: Flesh & The Dream is the pairing of Heather Leigh and Shackleton and between them they take a deep dive into a world of psychic dancehall on Choose Mortality, their debut album together. To say it is experimental is an understatement - they manage to mangle rhythms and distort sound, layer up oozing synths and deranged folk vocalisations into an album of psychedelic suspense and unease. None of these tracks ever sit still, whether it's the trippy church communion of 'Diviner Of The Flesh', hellish underworld electronica of 'Before The Flood' or depraved dub of 'Thirst For Disappearance'. Brilliantly bonkers.

Superheat; their live album released at the dawn of the new millennium and recorded primarily in the classic Amsterdam Paradiso, sonically deposits the group half a year before the release of their seminal sixth full-length If Then Else, by which time they had made the full transition to alternative auteurs. Here the material is a complimentary myriad of cuts from their acclaimed opus How to Measure A Planet?, interspliced with material from their darker, heftier albums such as Mandylion and Nighttime Birds.

There are tracks from fan fave albums like Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot, including a particularly thumping rendition of the latter's opening track Watcher Of The Skies, but surely the most fascinating aspect of this recordings are Gabriel's elongated and often fantastical spoken introductions to the songs, captured here in all their warped glory.

Review: British progressive rock band Gentle Giant put out their seventh studio full length in 1975. It was praised at the time for its high production values and a slightly more accessible sound than their previous records. As such it was their highest charting album in the US. Review: Erlend Viken's first outing as Giant Sky - 2021's self-titled debut - was part epic prog rock overture and part major statement about the state of the music business. Only available in physical album format, for some time just a single track was doing the rounds on streaming services, which wasn't really a track at all, but instead a message about the evils of major streaming platforms and their role in ruining the artistic economy. Second time around, and the music itself is no less powerful. Moving from 'Origin Of The Species' and its floating-through-the-cosmos atmosphere, to the rousing call-to-unity of 'The Pensieve' and the industrial-noise-cum-delicate pop on 'Imposter', the vision and scope are incredible, new ideas seemingly presenting themselves at every twist and turn on this 13-strong track list.

Review: Suspiria, one of Dario Argento's defining horror masterpieces, wasn't the first time Goblin had worked with the controversial-yet-acclaimed Italian director. The progressive rockers had, two years previous, delivered the incredible score to Profondo Rosso, and won plaudits at the time for their work - once people knew it was them. It was originally intended to be soundtracked by jazz pianist and composer Giorgio Gaslini, but disagreements on his output left just three of his themes in, but the credits were never updated, leaving Goblin listed incorrectly as "performers" as oppose to writers of the music. While this would have left a bad taste in the mouths of many, evidently that wasn't the case here. Two years later, the band were back with Argento and making this insane collection of sounds, half tracks, atmospheric noises, and cacophonous arrangements. A truly visceral experience, it's an immersive assault on the senses touching on experimental electronics, contemporary classical, gothic, and plain weirdo.

Review: One of the true pinnacles of British psych music overall, Gong remain a curiously cultish concern, but to those tuned in they're masters in their field. By now you'd expect any and all material from this madcap collective to have been thoroughly mined three times over, but lo and behold a freshly excavated desk recording from 1974, when the band were surely at their creative peak. Gong were in the midst of their seminal Radio Gnome album run and gigging relentlessly, but this high-grade capture is all too rare from this era of the band, and it catches them in full flight with a classic line-up including Daevid Allen, Steve Hillage, Laurie Allan and Venux de Luxe. With the classics rendered on this near-90-minute opus, this would serve as a wonderful primer let alone a treasure for the die-hards. Gong fans new and old, assemble!

Since then, they've gone from success to success, releasing a string of inspired albums. Even so, "Girl & Robot With Flowers" remains one of their most stunning sets, as this re-press proves. It boasts quietly beautiful moments inspired by classic film soundtracks ("Girl & Robot With Flowers Part 3"), straight-up late night jazz movements ("For Breath A Tarry", "Cast Adrift"), and breezy, vibraphone-heavy '60s grooves ("The Girl & Robot With Flowers Part 5"). Throughout, it's beautifully played and lovingly produced, with Foat's impeccable piano playing taking centre stage.
