The last time we heard from Paul Borchers' Yobkiss project, the San Francisco-based producer was offering up his take on acid house via a 2018 EP on Electronic Emergencies. "The Remains of a Gone Optimism", his third and arguably most high profile album, makes less attempt to wow dancefloors. Instead, it sees Borchers deliver a swathe of tracks that mix and match elements of coldwave, electro, Dutch darkwave, leftfield synth-pop, industrial, soundtrack electronica and melancholic ambient. Of course, there are some suitably up-tempo moments scattered throughout the LP that would work on suitable dancefloors, but they're merely part of a much more nuanced and imaginative electronic music tapestry.
