Nebraska-raised, California-based soul man Vernon Garrett was at the peak of his powers when "I've Learned My Lesson" was first released back in 1974. He'd scored a number of dancefloor hits at the tail end of the '60s via 7" singles on such labels as Kent and Venture Records, and by '74 was happily releasing material on the Watts U.S.A imprint he'd established as a vehicle for his own work. "I've Learned My Lesson" is arguably Garrett's strongest song of the period - a James Brown style heavy funk workout full of rousing horns, blistering drum breaks, jammed-out organ lines, gospel style backing vocals and, of course, his own scorching lead vocal. Since original copies are pretty hard to find these days, this reissue is more than welcome.
