As VC-118A, Samuel van Dijk has accrued an immaculate discography of melodious and atmospheric eletcro and IDM. It's fitting that he's called his latest album - the Dutch producer's first for two years - Spiritual Machines, because few of his contemporaries can match the effortless soulfulness of his intergalactic machine music. That's not to say there aren't darker or murkier excursions scattered across the album - see the foreboding deep space shuffle of 'Serge Extract', the radar-tuning oddness of 'Update' and the moody shuffle of 'Spiritual Machines' - it's just that these concoctions primarily serve to provide contrast to the deep, bittersweet, stirring and emotion-rich electro, IDM and slow techno compositions that dominate the album. It's basically a triumph, but then we'd expect nothing less from van Dijk.
