Fantastically named French twosome The Signal Phantasm first caught our attention with their 2017 debut single, "Holy Bread EP", a four-track collection that giddily mixed and mangled elements of techno, tech-house, Motor City futurism, rave-era hardcore and ambidextrous UK bass music. "Call of the Youth", the Marseille duo's debut album, follows a similar approach. Check, for example, rubbery opener "Haard", where analogue bleeps and bass fizz above a romping, garage-influenced techno groove, the sample-heavy early Warp Records flavour of "Macintosh" (all computer bleeps and heavy sub-bass) and the slamming techno-funk of "The Crash Mind". Many of their influences and inspirations may be vintage, but they've managed to assemble them in a particularly fresh and invigorating way.
