Under the Skymark alias, Modern Sun Records founder Marc Friedli has spent the best part of a decade turning out impeccable fusions of jazz, Latin, soul, deep house, boogie, jazz-funk and broken beat. Here he serves up his seventh full-length excursion, Virtual Stars. It's a typically breezy, sun-kissed and sumptuous affair rich in colourful, Herbie Hancock style synth lines, lilting vocals, jazz-fired drums (both machine and acoustic), undulating piano solos, tactile Rhodes keys, layered South American hand percussion and afternoon-bright electronics. In other words, it's another seductive set shot through with yearning soul and the kind of intricate musical arrangements from a producer with serious skills.
