Polish jazz re-constructors Skalpel return after a six-year hiatus with a sumptuous new album of low slung mood pieces that channel their homeland's illustrious musical history. Since they first surfaced on Ninja Tune many moons ago, the duo have mined a fertile seam of smoky, cinematic musicality that's modern in outlook even if it's classic in its sound sources. They're sounding particularly effervescent on this latest set, with tracks like "Cold Air" bursting with joy but never at the expense of that cool-headed vibe that has been their calling card for more than 15 years.
