Tokyo's Satoshi Fumi could hardly be described as a newcomer, having spent the last part of 12 years delivering quietly impressive singles - and occasional albums - in a range of house styles. The Essential EP finds him doffing a cap to Japan's deep house pioneers. This is, naturally, most evident on Fumi's delicious, Ron Trent style tweak of Manabu Ngayama and Soichi Terada's "Low Tension" - think flowing pianos, soft-touch chords and undulating bass - but can also be found on "Earth Beat (Dub)", where sci-fi melodies and acoustic guitars rub shoulders with organic percussion. Elsewhere, Pete Moss delivers a smooth but floor-friendly tweak of "Stay With Me", while Lori Wakasa smothers an ultra-deep grove with twinkling, eyes-closed piano solos.
