This may only be his third EP, but already Rove Ranger is looking like a techno titan in the making. There's something unnaturally heavy - and that's a good thing - about the track that opens his new EP on Ten Pills Mate, "If You Say So". Loopy, jacking and insatiably bass-heavy, it consists of little more than a spacey, two-note melody over the most thunderous of techno grooves. This weight and intensity continues on the slower, groovier throb of "Rave Memories", where warehouse-ready riffs occasionally break the kick-drum driven grooves. Elsewhere, "Introspective" is a more melodious - but also strangely panic-inducing - chunk of mid-tempo techno, while closing cut "You Want Both So I Gave You Both" sounds like Joey Beltram's bleep-era Mental Mayhem project.
