It's not that Pure X have changed dramatically since they gave us 'Pleasure', way back in 2011. But their sound has certainly progressed to become more polished and precise, even if newcomers will likely still focus on the grungy guitar scuzz first and foremost. For more seasoned ears, though, the standout aspect here is how much cleaner everything sounds to what came before -a case of depth before distortion, if you will. There are some complex moments that pack a lot into an album of consistently intimate tracks. 'Fantasy' is a great example - it could fill stadiums, but sounds as though we've taken time out at the back of that endless crowd, anthemic guitar chords soaring overhead while Jesse Jenkins V's understated vocals keep feet firmly rooted to the ground. On the whole, though, things are far more sedate and smooth, with fare like 'Slip Away', 'Hollywood' and 'Grieving Song' sounding as sweet as anything this lot have given us.
