Welcome 2 America, the first posthumous album release of previously unheard music from Prince's bulging archives, may not be up to the dizzyingly high standards he set himself, but it's still a hugely enjoyable collection of cuts. Prince recorded it with his New Power Generation band in 2010 ahead of a world tour, but eventually decided against releasing it. Musically, it's typical of the great man - think looser than normal shuffling, musically layered purple soul and funk in his inimitable style- and it does genuinely contain some gems. These include 'Born 2 Die', which reminded us of the conscious soul of Curtis Mayfield; 'Welcome 2 America', where Prince's spoken word vocals take aim at the USA during the Obama era, and the guitar-laden Purple Rain-era throwback 'Hot Summer'.
