For those not familiar with the contemporary Japanese funk scene, Nautilus will no doubt be a new name. Led by drummer Toshiyuki Sasaki, the trio has spent the last five years offering up killer cover versions of everything from dancefloor jazz staple "Root Down" and Roy Ayers' "We Live In Brooklyn, Baby", to Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner" and, appropriately, Bob James' "Nautilus". Here they deliver another killer interpretation of a classic, adding layers of spacey jazz-funk instrumentation and a mind-altering vocoder vocal to the oh-so familiar grooves of Lonnie Liston Smith staple "Expansions". Japanese re-edit king Ryuhei The Man delivers his interpretation on the flip, wisely making more of the brilliant bassline and Sasaki's superb drumming.
