A historic document from 1976 gets a much-needed reissue: Musique Sans Paroles traces Guinea's roots back to independence in 1958 as the country immersed itself in a policy of authenticite. Musicians were provided with instruments by the state to rediscover and express the country's newfound freedom with a fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds where African and Latin roots were intertwined with jazz ideologies and dense, tribal percussion. Throughout the 60s this spirit flourished - with many of the bands on this album leading the way - but began to decline (with the country's socio-political situation) in the 70s. With a more sensitive political climate, Music Without Words was a safer delivery than lyrical messages... But the music, its dynamics, drama and heartfelt expression are almost stronger without. A really interesting, unique moment in time captured with true authenticity.
