When you're faced with an electronic album pegged as a 'journey' it's easy to feel world weary. It's not that we don't love a good trip, but it's an overused phrase that often simply means deep and relatively homogenous. Not so here, though. Mood of Departure's Roadmap, despite being grounded in downtempo traditions, is packed with a multitude of flavours that all sound coherent but different.
So while we open on the stop-you-dead ambience of 'Scan', up there with the most emotive electronic symphonies we've heard in some time, even this opener doesn't stay still for long. From there, 'Nightmare Girls' and its erratic and deranged disco vocals atop a garage rave half-beat, the slow burning trip hop of 'Templefield Midnightskate' and the wonderful sort of death offered by the thick bands of synth on 'Until The End of the World' are all magnificent, and these are just the obvious choices.
