Studio. Workstation. Atelier. Action stations. The works. Such are the many alternate words for 'studio', as in 'work room'; the word also makes up the title of the latest Monolake record. Yet the word also has associations not just of an objective place, but also of an objective headspace: one can 'be in the studio' simply if one is engaged in contemplative thought, contemplating objects of study, which could, in theory, also be studios; a kind of never-ending recursive dance, to say very little to begin with. Monolake's new techno album knows this as much. The artist reveals that "most of the tracks on this album got revised countless times, and then even more", suggesting a potentially boundless obsession; one could zoom and zoom ever-further into the painting (or track, or trees) yet not lose sight of the wood. From the opening synth chants and loomings-over of 'The Elders Disagree', which recalls mixed feelings of awe at the sage wisdom of one's ancestors, and fear of their disapproval - to the closing tonal slides and tremolos of 'Eclipse', this is a carefully, wonderfully crafted record, one that to be studied with fervour, yet not infinitely; the interpretive buck has to stop somewhere.
