Weird, surreal, beguiling but musically brilliant, for some Mariah are one of the finest Japanese synth pop bands of all time. The only reason many people haven't heard of them before is the same reason we've only recently started to see Western labels explore re-release options from the forgotten synth clubs of 1980s Tokyo, despite the era offering a wealth of incredible talent who made a goldmine of pioneering work.
You can also thank Everland, the label carrying this archive unearthing, for choosing an album that will set people back a couple of hundred euros in its original packaging. A true rarity, it spans the sparse, fragile but uptempo pop of 'Shinzo No Tobira', the staccato, operatic electro of 'Fujiyu Na Nezumi', and neo-classical string and pianos ('Shisen'), with added echoed drum pads, of course. One of a kind indeed; it's probably worth digging out the outfit's other albums now, too.
