Although not quite as celebrated as his contemporaries Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Bunny Lee, producer/label owner Joe Gibbs should be regarded as one of reggae's most influential figures of the 1970s. This superb double-disc set aims to celebrate Gibbs legacy by focusing on his most prolific period as a producer in 1971 and '72. It's packed to the rafters with Jamaican club and radio hits from the period, alongside dubs and alternate instrumental versions based on the same key 'riddims' (see Tommy McCook's 'Ah-So' and the Destroyers' 'If Ah-So'). Most of these tracks, from the likes of Winston Wright, the Heptones, U-Roy, Jackie Brown, the Ethiopians and Max Romeo, have not been available on CD before, making it an essential purchase for reggae obsessives and newcomers alike.
