"I wanted it to be a kind of sincere love letter to French pop music. I didn't want it to be in any way kind of a pastiche-type thing. And that also meant that I had to work on my French pronunciation and stuff like that. So that to a French person listening to it, they wouldn't listen and think, 'Oh, that's disrespectful' or 'That just doesn't make sense.'"
Take it from us, Jarvis Cocker has achieved what he set out to do on this record. Essentially a covers album of 12 classic French pop songs, and the companion piece to Wes Anderson's typically stylised movie The French Dispatch, while the tracks here are from a different era to our own, each is what you'd best describe as timeless, as oppose to dated. Every stop off on the playlist feels cool, full of life, and seductive almost to the point of cliche, which is all good with us.
