First released digitally back in 2015, Flavien Berger's impressive sophomore set "Contrebande 01. Le Disque De Noel" finally comes to vinyl after four long years. Built around sturdy hardware drums, vintage-sounding synthesizer lines, stylish electronics and the producer's own occasional vocals, the eight-track set flits between off-kilter synth-pop, leftfield electro soundscapes, skittish up-tempo workouts (the ambient techno throb of "PGRM 85") and minimalist electronic pop that tends towards the dark and drowsy. The album's headline attraction is undoubtedly "Liquide", a 13-minute slab of krautrock and new wave-influenced goodness that ends with five minutes of trippy, alien sounding ambient.
